The first time I read this I was very confused about it and after going through the source thread I'm still quite uncertain about how this is supposed to function.

As written, it suggested to me that the 'return to hand payment' was to be done at the time of exiling/selling the permanent. The source seems to indicate that it's a separate ability that can return it from any public zone to hand...

Now I also note that there is that 'during upkeep' in there, but that would still suggest to me that it's a delayed trigger. Also, is 'during upkeep' something that's used outside of outdated wordings in some reminder texts?

This made me think of another mechanic that could use the official Gold / Treasure tokens well: 'any color' mana that can only be paid with mana that could've been of any color. You could kind of tie it to these if you just give cards alternative costs that could be paid with that 'any color mana'.

So how did you manage to use those custom images/symbols btw? I recall there being some talk about it, but I can't find a way to do that myself anymore. Those custom images/symbols still aren't usable in the mana costs of cards though, right?

"during upkeep" is an outdated wording that has been replaced with activated abilities/upkeep triggers.

While digital gameplay is not a real concern I try to keep them in mind. I opted out of triggered abilities, because such would get annoying soon on MtGO/Arena etc.

I thought it easier to use two special actions rather than putting two activated abilities int he reminder text. I'm still figuring this out.

I have the gold mana actually activated in some set, somewhere (Conversation IIRC), but I don't feel like using it unless mana symbols can be properly imported. Maybe I'll change my opinion on this if my own software supports a dirty fix for this.

These try very hard to sell themselves as something that it's better to use counters for than tokens/mana. The idea is that if the best attempts at using counters are still lackluster, you better keep to the beaten path.

The custom symbols don't work in mana costs. The reason is because they are mechanics (check out the mechanics page of this set).

For some reason (I actually have a good guess for the reason, but let's pretend it's just "some reason") html code directly put into the text box is not executed, but html code inserted as an alternate text of a keyword mechanic gets executed fine.

You can use mechanic replacement in card text and in comments.

The Pirate Set also has an intersting take on gold counters. Maybe somewhere between the two is a good idea.
