Congratulations all on reaching 100 design challenges! :D

As a celebration of Multiverse's many designers and challenges, the challenge here is to create cards for a cardset mentioned in the thread. Then... come here and mention another cardset! Which can be one of two things:

  • Mention a cardset that's already on multiverse.
  • Describe a cardset that doesn't yet exist (in enough detail that people can be expected to design something)

Alternatively, if you prefer things random:

  • You can choose a random cardset by going to the site's front page at http://magicmultiverse.net , look at the first cardsets mentioned, and choose one of those cardsets for which to design two cards.
  • You can choose a random colour, type and mana cost by using http://www.random.org/dice/?num=3 : first die is W/U/B/R/G/art-or-multi, second die is CMC, third die is art/ctr/ench/inst/sorc/other.

(Or... if you just want to mention a cardset on Multiverse you've always liked, and want to design a couple of cards for it, that's fine too!)

When suggesting a cardset for designs, you're free to suggest either a cardset of your own or a cardset you find interesting. However, when designed cards, you should choose a cardset that's not your own even if someone's suggested yours!

Oh, and just for clarity: all cards created for this challenge should go in this cardset, Multiverse Design Challenge (use the "New card related to this one" link).

To kick things off, I'll suggest three cardsets you might like to design for.

  • With a rather mechanical theme, dude1818's Mirroria. Every card is a double-faced card, and most of them try to do something or other with DFCs that's not been done yet.
  • With a much more flavour/concept-driven idea, qqzm's Time Reversal. Design a card that's got nostalgia for something pre-Time Spiral but using concepts, mechanics or technologies that came along after Time Spiral.
  • And somewhere in between the two, I do find the concept of amuseum's So Ling 素靈 fascinating. The core conflict is between {r}{g}{u} Elementals, with themes of nature and science, and {w}{b}{1} Spirits, with themes of psychology, artifice, and artificiality (Auras and Equipment).

I made Ruby Phoenix and Unstable Fault for Mirroria, and Defy the Unreal and Spiritual Cage for So Ling. Mirroria Since I made cards for two sets, I'll mention two sets:

  • The Community Set, which hasn't gotten any love in a long time (and probably needs a bit of restructuring!). The theme here is Multicolored vs. Monocolored. All multicolored creatures have flying, and each of the monocolors has its own unique theme.
  • Anydria, a desert plane with no blue cards. I'm interested in seeing ideas people have for the set, and this seems like a perfect place to put in a plug for it.

Creating two cards for Time Reversal, I made Hunting Clique as a Hunting Grounds reference, and Bazaar Infiltrator as a Bazaar of Baghdad reference.

Adding one more alternative cardset to the options:

I'll come back and do some cards for the Community Set in a little while. (I already threw a bunch of ideas at Anhydria's suggestions thread, so I should probably let other people have a go at that :) )

Made just one card for the Community Set: Lofty Sanctifier.

Thank you Alex, by the way, for kicking this off. I've been rather sick lately, and just couldn't bring myself to do more than the bare minimum. Feeling much better now. Cards are on their way.

First submission: Kobold Musketeer for Time Reversal. My first submissions:

  • American History got a bit of buzz from people when Tanis978 first started the page, but he designed no cards, leaving what Everything2 would call a nodeshell. I always thought it would be kind of cool to go back and fill that page some day. But until then, I figure it makes a good challenge.
  • Also added Double-Check Inquestor for Link's set Anydria. Second submission:

  • My Universe, My Rules. Yes, I just invited you to design a card the way Vitenka would design one, with a very top down approach with little care for how the rules of the game really operate, while potentially fixing how the card could work in the flavor text. :D Bonus points if you can duplicate Vitenka's rather unique style of taking a very roundabout way to get from point A to point B in the comment section, more commonly found in Community Mashup Set.
  • I found it surprisingly hard to make cards which seemed to fit naturally in an existing set. These are my best effort.

For Mirroria, I made Jungle Rearguard and Ruin Scavenger.

They're a bit too similar to some existing cards in the set, for which I apologise.

And ask for submissions for a new cardset:

    • Alex's Sienira's Facets, the first cardset on multiverse. Each adjacent colour pair had a flavour and a mechanical theme based around one of the card types.

I loved the flavour of Sienira's Facets, even if later sets may have had more balanced mechanics.

Kind of sort of added Double-Check Inquisitor based on concerns from Link and Jack over the Inquestor.

Added a couple of Vitenka-style cards for My Universe, My Rules: Danger Mouse and Inspector Gadget. I'm planning to do a more rule-bendy one at some point though. I didn't try to imitate Vitenka's stream-of-consciousness mashup style comments... maybe next time.

Then I created a couple of Vitenka-style rule-breaking cards: Decree of Kuri, on which I attempted the bonus points stream-of-consciousness design story, and Pile of Corpses, which may be just an odd idea rather than a particularly Vitenkan idea.

The next cardset I'm going to suggest people design for is:

    • Tesla, the Goblin Artisans custom cardset. It doesn't exist on Multiverse, but we can throw a few cards into this Design Challenge set if we want to. I've playtested it once and it's got a really interesting mechanic, in the DFC two-part mecha. So design either some mecha parts, some support cards, or maybe something else to be an alternate mechanic in a post-apocalyptic steampunk set full of giant mecha.

ya sienira facets sounds interesting. Blacklist & Homeward Bound

    Ok, let's do this thang.

    Mirroria: Shirkal Celebrant
    Time Reversal: Lunar hound
And Kuri, Champion of Order in reply to Alex, slightly cheating as it's my own set.
    ...added...
    So Ling: Kāishǐ jiéshù
    Community Set: Pegasaur Archer
    Any dryer? Biorhythms
Achenemey Scheme: They Were Right, you Know
    Sienara: Bushwork
American History: Abraham, Emperor of the USA
    Tesla: Henbe Gremlins

I made The World Shifts in My Favor and Shudder at my Vision of the Future for Archenemy Schemes.
Adding another set to the list? Hmmm... how about Frystheim? I don't know much about it other than it involves Snow. But I like Snow.

Added Emperor Norton I of the USA, then realized that maybe that's what Vitenka was referencing in the first place, and I'm being redundant. Oh, whatever. Norton should have a whole block dedicated to just him. My only regret is that I didn't think to make him a Planeswalker.

    (It was)

(Sorry. It was such a good choice, though, that I couldn't stop my head from designing around it.)

Added My, What Interesting Toys You Have for Archenemy. I suppose that means I need to add

  • Space: the Convergence. Okay, yes, we've already had a challenge for adding cards to this set. But, let's face it, it's a fun set to design around.
  • Are there any more submissions for this? I'm going to go ahead with challenge # 101 in a couple of days. FWIW, I really enjoyed this challenge, but I found it hard to actually do well.
