Oops, yes, I meant, when equipped creature attacks or blocks, but those alternatives might work too.
try cost at WU. was 1WW
UEOT
Cards that work particularly well in this archetype:
Decadence Ramp
Common: Custodians of Nippon, Positional Gambit, Elder Surveyor, Desert Scout, Supply Drop, plus common decadence cards Benevolent Landowner, Smug Cavalier
Uncommon: Palace Gardener, Natural Energy
Rare: Kusakabe, Liberationist Zealot
Graveyard:
Common: Enduring Custodians
Uncommon: Miraculous Recovery, C.C., Impulsive Witch, Geass to Live?
Trying to imagine some commons for if the (Green-white archetype) is ramp-themed. Also trying to imagine some larger creatures.
Compare Enduring Custodians.

Compare Custodians of Nippon.
Could alternatively have no other ability, but just be uncommon, and possibly a little smaller (3/2, perhaps). Either staying legendary+named, or using the descriptor workaround to remove legendary and give the card a name like "Persistent Mentor".
Cards that work particularly well in this archetype:
Rapid Deployment
Common: Test Pilot, Smug Cavalier, Inventive Technician, Sergeant Exemplar, Desert Scout, Sakuradite Engineer
Uncommon: Prototype Deployment, Steal the Prototype
Plus all the aggressive white knightmares like Gloucester Royal RPI-00/SC.
Blink:
Common:
Uncommon: Geass Canceller, Drop from the Ceiling
Cards that are particularly good in this archetype:
Common:
Token-makers: Material Gambit, People's Champion
Team pumps: Inspired Charge, Inspiring Captain
Other go-wide rewards: Blustering Coward
Misc: Geass to Betray
Incendiary Preacher is currently inactive but would be great too.
Plus most other one- and two-drops. Plus whatever cheap combat tricks end up in these colours like Geass to Withstand.
Uncommon:
Token-makers: Incite the Rabble
Team pumps: Urban Guerrilla, Sergeant Exemplar
Other go-wide rewards: Gung-Ho Strategist, Outnumber
Rare: The Ends Don't Justify the Means
And of course most raid and revolt cards work pretty well with this strategy too.
Reprint of Inspired Charge. This is a pretty big pump for this set, but it does do good things for Limited, filling the "expensive combat trick" slot and especially good for the (Red-white archetype). Fortunately the name fits well.
A tweak on Mogg War Marshal. Primarily for the (Red-white archetype), but also possibly useful for overthrow strategies in general.
This could alternatively be a tweak on Thatcher Revolt. That'd achieve the aim of letting overthrow trigger once or twice without meaning it's guaranteed to trigger every turn from now on.
The Black Knights Faction definitely fit in red. The problem I'm currently finding is that there aren't any other red creatures. It looks kinda silly if every red creature in a set is "Creature - Human Rebel".
Hmm. Something like
> Whenever one or more creatures attack or block, you may pay

. If you do, Gawain deals X damage to each attacking or blocking creature an opponent controls.
That'd help with some of the problematic situations... I think?
I also consider an approach like
> Whenever equipped creature blocks, you may pay

. If you do, Gawain deals 5 damage to each attacking creature.
That sets a concrete threshold of 6 mana that you have to leave up, which will certainly mean you can't be developing your board at the same time as holding back Gawain in defence unless you've got a load of mana. It also means that if you want to use your flying to attack you're giving up the opportunity to use the heavy artillery in defence. And it means opposing tap effects, for example, can shut it down.
Would it help/fit the flavour for the activated ability to be an attack/block trigger? That doesn't make it a lot more interactive, but opens at least some weaknesses.
Brainstorming other possibilities:
It's hard to come up with sensible ways for the opponent to interact with this.
One advantage to this over Surprise Deployment is that this can probably coexist in a set with Drop from the Ceiling, whereas Surprise Deployment is a bit close to both of them.
One possibility I'm considering is making this cost
(or

), as the uncommon gold build-around-me for the (White-blue archetype).
