Top-down design for Shinichiro Tamaki, the annoying whiner on the Black Knights' side. I really wanted him to be a one-drop, but equally he couldn't have more than one power because he's useless in combat; 2 toughness works quite well though because he somehow avoids dying. But he didn't want to have a very beneficial ability either. This is what I came up with.
The abilities could mention Rebels if I want. I could also make him 0/1 or 0/2, as he's really rubbish at fighting. I do want the card to be a common, though, and while it doesn't need to be good I want it to be at least sometimes somewhat playable.
Awww... it's an awesomely funny piece of art.
Edwin points out that this might not actually fit the gameplay of the set that well. Since most creatures will be somewhat small, with larger creatures only achievable with mecha or combat tricks, it's not going to work so well to drop a huge unexpected blocker. It'd be better if the set had a lot of ETB effects. Such as subjugate, actually, but that has other problems.
Edwin suggested this cycle (this, Prepare for Infiltration, Prepare for Survival, Prepare for Readiness, Prepare for Heroism) could be instants. That'd certainly be more useful, but I might want to take the cost up to about 3 mana in that cast, to try to encourage you to use prepare rather than just always saving it. It would also make them more homogeneous with the rest of the combat tricks in the set, which isn't exactly a good thing.
7 mana feels like a lot to turn something into a 3/2 flyer. But Edwin points out that equip
, while tempting, would allow you to turn lots of things into 3/2 flyers on the same turn... (Well, the current wording does that too, but more expensively.) Maybe
to cast, still
to equip, but just
to transform between modes.
It'd be nice to find a way to make this effect last only while the creature is equipped. One that doesn't make this painfully wordy.
Edwin points out the lifegain on this isn't really in black's colour pie...
Played a game with a few decadence creatures. Sadly the first one to come out was Ostentatious Prince, which was really confusing for the player who hadn't seen the ability before. Then Cruel Princess hit, and started blowing up the two-drops (and forcing the opponent to keep two-drops in hand). I was being beaten up by 3-drops in mechs for a while until I finally got this guy out, and started blowing up 3-drops while gaining 6 life.
The mechanic is pretty tricky to balance.
This is powerful but non-interactive, by contrast with Guren. It does dominate the battlefield from afar... which is admittedly just what Gawain does in the series, but still. It's really hard to deal with.
This has hit the battlefield a couple of times. Feels powerful, but interactive. Perhaps could be +2/+1. At one point it was on something subjugated by Occupation Grunts, taking the power up to 2. It did manage the trick of killing an enemy mech (triggering eject) in first strike damage and then killing the pilot in regular combat damage, which is just what I was after.
Needs to not be able to sac itself! Though Edwin disagrees on gameplay grounds.
add full card render for assessment of text size
Aye, you're right (whoever you are). This is one of the options I'm considering for the way the mecha work, but introducing two new keywords on the same set of commons is definitely a red flag.
It's probably less complex if you've played with commons like Eel Umbra and Howling Wolf, as Eject and Squad are very similar to those effects. But for new players, yeah, this is certainly a lot of words.
This seems incredibly complex for a common.
add Squad as on Glasgow RP-11; +2/+1 -> +1/+1
