Needs a better (more ominous) picture. The Gawain is a fantastic heavy weapon, not suited for direct combat (hence +0 power), but immensely powerful heavy ranged support.

You could definitely argue that flavour-wise the Gawain should be black, but this ability is pretty red (well, or in fact white).

use mechanics to allow switching of "piloting""equipped"

Playtesting, this played pretty much the role I expected: takes a lot of mana (5+2) to get online, but once it's online and mana untapped, it dominates combat - but without ending the game too quickly, so the opponent has a chance to work around it. The Guren Mk-II came up against it, and they're both powerful effects: which one wins will depend on the particular circumstance of how people play out the tactics. V had left himself little enough Gawain mana that I was able to suit up Guren and push through with an unexpected 5-power double strike trampler for the win.

This is powerful but non-interactive, by contrast with Guren. It does dominate the battlefield from afar... which is admittedly just what Gawain does in the series, but still. It's really hard to deal with.

Brainstorming other possibilities:

  • Move the damage to a tap ability, like Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile or Jiwari, the Earth Aflame. Doesn't inherently help, though I could limit it to one target like Jiwari.
  • Move to white and give it the ability "M, T: Destroy target attacking (or blocking) creature"

It's hard to come up with sensible ways for the opponent to interact with this.

Would it help/fit the flavour for the activated ability to be an attack/block trigger? That doesn't make it a lot more interactive, but opens at least some weaknesses.

Hmm. Something like

> Whenever one or more creatures attack or block, you may pay {x}{r}{r}. If you do, Gawain deals X damage to each attacking or blocking creature an opponent controls.

That'd help with some of the problematic situations... I think?
I also consider an approach like

> Whenever equipped creature blocks, you may pay {4}{r}{r}. If you do, Gawain deals 5 damage to each attacking creature.

That sets a concrete threshold of 6 mana that you have to leave up, which will certainly mean you can't be developing your board at the same time as holding back Gawain in defence unless you've got a load of mana. It also means that if you want to use your flying to attack you're giving up the opportunity to use the heavy artillery in defence. And it means opposing tap effects, for example, can shut it down.

Oops, yes, I meant, when equipped creature attacks or blocks, but those alternatives might work too.
