That's what I was going for with my "In order to stop this being completely random and unpredictable, I'm planning to have the distribution of these abilities spread around different colours" and "So against a green-white deck, you shouldn't block; against a blue-black deck, you should block; and if my colours include red, all bets are off. (But if I only have one mana up, then the red 1-drop revolt card might be rare, so it's not very likely I have it... and so on.)"
I'll definitely have to keep an eye on it.
I'm not sure the whole thing will be feel-good. It's like that pair of morphs; one did nasty things when it hit you, the other did nasty things when blocked. With the same morph cost. Should you block or not? No way to know. Play randomly and feel bad.
This pair of mechanics could come out the same way, if you're not careful.
But they do seem like a nice flavour match.
I've been thinking I need a different mechanic for the Black Knights faction. Overthrow didn't play very well. I particularly want it to play into the set's "mind games, tactical genius" feeling.
So my current plan is: Some Black Knights cards will have Raid abilities. They reward you for attacking. Other Black Knights cards will have Revolt abilities. They reward you for having your creatures die. Both of these are reprint mechanics (Mardu Heart-Piercer, Lifecraft Cavalry), but the flavour of the names "Raid" and "Revolt" is perfect for the set, and I think the gameplay will be a good fit as well.
The result of having both of these in the set should be: I attack you with a 1/2 when you have a 2/3. Do you block? The possibilities are:

In order to stop this being completely random and unpredictable, I'm planning to have the distribution of these abilities spread around different colours. Flavour-wise, I think it works for green to get Revolt - the traditionalist Japanese faction are green, and they want to return to their old traditional ways, but to do that they need to overthrow the Britannian oppressors. And I think Raid could happily go in any other colour, but most likely black - the more ruthless Britannian elements and assorted self-interested vigilante groups conduct various raids on each other too.
My thinking is that, across all rarities, the distribution will be something like:
Raid: 5 red, 4 black, something like:

Revolt: 5 red, 4 green, something like:

The set will also have a good collection of saboteur effects to make it riskier to not block. Mostly these will be visible on the card, like Scroll Thief, Centaur Rootcaster, Blind Zealot; but there will be some cards, blue in particular, that can grant saboteur effects at instant speed - such as Prepare for Infiltration, and in which category I'd also count Ninja in Disguise.
Combat tricks will be in all colours but focused in green and red. So against a green-white deck, you shouldn't block; against a blue-black deck, you should block; and if my colours include red, all bets are off. (But if I only have one mana up, then the red 1-drop revolt card might be rare, so it's not very likely I have it... and so on.)
The Gambit mechanic was certainly intended to act as pseudo-unblockable-sorta, to tie in with the set's saboteur effects. So that much is deliberate.
I am coming to like Jack's idea of simply "Whenever a creature you control dies [during combat / when attacking] this turn". It removes an entire line of text. It powers up the gambits, a bit, making them more like Falter than Artful Dodge, but that's not much of a problem. It gets jmg's "explosiveness" if you cast multiple gambits - but again, the opponent just very likely chooses not to block in that case. And, crucially, it lets you cast this without any targets if you want to.
On the other hand, it matches the flavour of a gambit a bit less well. Which is a big downside to that approach.
sure, that makes sense. but up the main cost to 3 in that case.
This is extremely unappealing as a sorcery. Could this at least say "Until your next turn" rather than "Until end of turn"?
@kauefr: Yes, that's right. This is obviously a flashy mythic, so not at all the simplest execution of the prepare mechanic. It is unfortunately fairly wordy. It's still my best candidate for a Prediction / planning mechanic having tried quite a few :)
The commons with prepare are things like Prepared Guardian and Blaze Luminous (and I'd like to find some even simpler ones). And there's a high-profile uncommon cycle - Prepare for Ambush and friends - which have Prepare
, so on turns after the turn you prepared them you can cast them for free.
prepare cost down to 3. 2+3 is still > 4.

Yeah; though you usually wouldn't want to - since you can flat-cast it as a sorcery if you like.
This Prepare mechanic is really hard to parse. If I understood it correctly, you can only prepare a spell at sorcery speed but can cast it at instant speed, also, you can 't cast it for its prepare cost the same turn you prepare it. Is that right?
Wants to be called Thanatos Gambit. The amazing bluff that Lelouch pulls when he [spoiler][spoiler][spoiler].
Sortof wants to be "If you would lose the game this turn, target opponent loses the game instead", but there's no way that's printable. This way fits the flavour and fits the control-change themes of the set.
And for the FAQ: if you've cast this, and your life total is 3 and you're being attacked by 5 1/1s, you prevent all 5 damage and gain control of all of them. But if some of them had first strike, you'd only gain control of the ones that were going to deal the actual killing blow.
Is it worth pointing out that this can untap a land? Not that I think it's a particularly strong card, but it's probably worth mentioning that if this isn't the second turn of the game, this can effectively cost

Probably the most common mode in limited is to just tap a blocker and get a mana rebate. It's extremely unplayable with these stats, but that doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be buffed.

I'd reflavour this as some form of resource theft; but sure, seems fine.
Though randomly sticking Bubastis into Code Geass works too.
I was considering ((C9146)) for the set, but this set will have a lot of instants and be fairly short of simple blue creatures. So let's try this. Being a common it's sorcery speed, so it's no Pestermite or Deceiver Exarch (although it does still go infinite with Splinter Twin).
It's not useful against scary attackers in the way that Frost Lynx/Stitched Mangler is. It gives you an untap of your key attacker (or your Geass to Inform) instead. Is that what I want? Maybe not; maybe this should just be a Frost Lynx.

Yeah; I prefer your wording and the fairly obvious rule "My spell, my choice".
Although; if you reallllly want to keep flavour; the controller of each creature chooses which other creature to deal the damage to simultaneously; and they only actually deal it if to a clear majority target... Which is now, amusingly, less good at dealing direct damage; but more red :)
