Adding this as the common noncreature
spell for the moment. But it was pretty tentative / experimental / stab-in-the-dark; I'm very much up for changing it to one of the other options discussed above or in other ways, as people thing.
add code
Is this deliberately worded to avoid triggering Enlighten, or should we find a way to word it that includes the word "draw"?
Adding this as a "big dumb creature" at uncommon. I feel it maybe wants an ability keyword as well?
How about a functional reprint of Runeboggle / Force Void? Seems the most obvious kind of "soft counter + draw a card".
Although looking at the skeleton, looks like you're well supplied for expensive blue noncreature cards already. How about Disrupt?
I think this will want tweaking, but added to the skeleton.
Jack: Problem with that is that you can activate it if there are no flyers on the board, just three ground-pounders. "This Grizzly Bears loses flying and that one gains flying! Haha!" I think that'd make quite a large percentage of the actual activations that happen in-game feel just wrong.
If there's a monocolor theme, having a soft red burn that scales with red mana makes sense. Spitting Earth, Seismic Strike or Spire Barrage are the usual candidates, and this could be any of them, or something else if someone suggests something.
[Spire barrage may take the "lava axe" slot. I considered a variant on heat ray that cared about red mana, but "number of mountains" is a simpler way to do it.]
add code, and make 3 mana not 2
Good thought. There are a number of cantrip Auras, but the subset of them which boost P/T have been pretty uninspiring: Scavenged Weaponry, Ritual of Steel... Vampirism isn't bad, but it's doing something very different. I think this is an excellent simple common.
I think it should probably be 3 mana rather than 2, though.
a nice serviceable allied-colour common noncreature card. Add to skeleton.
As for this card: I fear the gold common slots are a bit too limited for this to be a common as is; at least, if we're also having a 2-mana flyer for each allied-colour pair. I'd be happy to either see this go uncommon, or to see this turn into a manafixing instant, something like Manamorphose but a lot more powerful because it requires 2 colours of mana already.
What do people think? Shall we say this is uncommon for the moment, and empty out the common
noncreature slot for whatever ends up going in there?
@Link: Hmm... I may have overstated my case somewhat. I did quite enjoy Esper-aligned cards during Alara block, and I thought coloured artifacts were a good choice for a way to represent New Phyrexia's hybrid flesh-and-metal monstrosities. But they're a tool to be used rather sparingly, not thrown in casually.
I've just realised this isn't as good as I thought, because it'll normally trigger during the draw step, then go away by the time first main happens. I reckon we want every Enlighten trigger to be normally at least vaguely useful with the automatic draw during the draw step, and giving
definitely fails that. Do we want to use Sakura-Tribe Springcaller technology here? Or just kill the card?
remove code; make uncommon
As it turns out, most of the gold commons are creatures; I think this common slot will be needed for a noncreature spell. A creature of this size is much less of a problem at uncommon (see Serra Angel), so I'll let this turn into a generic fat uncommon flyer at about 4/4, and leave the question of a common gold flyer's maximum size unsolved for now.
2/1 -> 1/1
Why the "target non-Island land" bit? It evokes Quicksilver Fountain, but Flood doesn't stop the flooded lands tapping for their original colour of mana.
I decided to put in a mass "can't block" in the "lava axe" slot, as with concussive bolt, etc, since that fits with the all-in attack theme a lot better.
This was inspired by Devilish Tunneling, but I decided applying to only red creatures was sufficiently linear, and it didn't need the mana incentive as well, and that intimidate was more fun than mountainwalk as it will be sometimes be more interactive if the defending player has a mix of creatures.
I provisionally used the anti-multicolor "white, green, blue or black" wording instead of intimidate, but that's subject to change.
I added a power-boost to make it usually do something useful even if you only had a couple of tiny creatures.
But this is still placeholder-y, we can change it if anyone has any other good suggestions.
We still need a couple of soft burn spells as well.
I like the "stealing flying" flavour, but it wasn't really clear to me even from the previous version of the card. Perhaps make an uncommon or rare version that could suck multiple abilities?
If terms of templating simplicitly, could we even go to "target creature loses flying UEOT and target creature gains flying UEOT"? That loses more of the flavour, but shouldn't work the same way with fewer words?
Is this really meant to be "tap target creature", or should it be "tap enchanted creature" like Mystic Restraints?
Hmm. That's interesting. It's better mechanically, but loses some points on flavor. It seems odd that the non-flying creature still gets flying if I Doom Bladed the flying creature in response. I'm changing it over, but if anyone else has an opinion, feel free to say so.
