Well, we've got approximately 13 submissions here and only 7 slots to fill, so this seems like a good time to see what we got, and see what we need if any.
First, I added Tangled Mass to the file, since a cycle of rare manacyclers just makes sense. I threw Glarrug in the Mythic slot because it's the only card that feels like a Mythic to me (Hive Queen feels like a normal rare in my mind. That's just my opinion, though... I could be off.) I can easily remove it. I also added Spreading Blossoms, because I like where the card's head is at, and it's nice to see some +1/+1 counter cards in rare that seem to have a completely other agenda.
That leaves four other slots. But I designed most of these cards, so it doesn't seem right for me to decide what should go in the file, also. Does anyone have any cards that they specifically would like to see in the file? Or would like to see changed, but added?
Oh, I also picked through the uncommon file to find some older cards that could be potential rares. That list includes:
Anybody have any preferences as to what goes in the file?
Nice. I approve. Would be nicer if the set had some notable nonbasics.
I figured we'd need a cycle of simple mana cyclers at rare, and I wanted something that made sense timing wise, but that could still be powerful in the right situation. Just want to point out that this doesn't fetch basics. Have Urzatron, will travel, I guess.
Wanted to get a lot of buds on a rare, but I figured it would be kind of boring if the card was just five buds. So I tried to think of some minor effect that each +1/+1 counter could have, and eventually settled on "They operate as -1/-1 counters on artifact creatures." Cute. Doesn't really help your team, though, beyond being generally useful.
Fair enough. Iona and Griselbrand are some crazy, crazy cards. But I guess they die to a versatile removal suite, and so does this. Will remember Pro lands, though. Maybe I'll just throw an uncommon in the file.
I think this is a fine mythic, perhaps without the protection from lands which reads pretty strange on a mythic. I think the rest of the text is great, and you definitely do want some reward for getting N mana of a particular colour (be that 8 or 10).
I don't think this needs an anti-reanimation clause. I can't imagine people choosing this over Iona, Shield of Emeria or Griselbrand.
Hmm. Probably should have an anti-Zombify clause... It's certainly somewhere near the top end of what you would want a Zombify to do. Even if the 'Pro lands' was removed though, it's still got a bit too much text. I guess the +1/+1 counters would have to go... I'm not sure if double fight per turn feels over the top enough, though...
GGGGG spells at rare are fine, but I wanted to go straight up nutso with the colored mana symbols in Mythic. Unfortunately, though, Khalni Hydra beat me to the punch for 8G, so I had to aim for 10 to trump that card. Which left me very little space to work with in the text box... so I figured "Why not a Legendary Ooze?"
Originally, I was kicking around the idea of Deathtouch, Trample + Can block any number of creatures per turn to get people coming and going... but no matter how big I made that creature, I don't think it would be Mythic enough. Protection from lands is just a bit of flavor for something an Ooze should have, plus it works well against lands animated through fortifications. In fact, we may not want to waste it here.
Normally, when I look at a card like this, I think that "2 is the average effect, 3 is what happens when it's better". Unfortunately, that thought process sometimes throws me. Draw two cards for 2G sounds about right... but it didn't occur to me how hard it was to tag a player sometimes.
Yes, definitely a lot closer to what I'd expect out of such a card. My main issue was about how the card would most of the time draw only one card and wasn't even a guaranteed draw.
Hmm, it's two-thirds of a fused Give // Take for two-thirds of the cost. Fair enough.
Ooh, except that that one removes the counters where this doesn't. Eh, this is rare and can't be split, that ought to make up for it.
Yeah, this looks pretty nice now. Fine, at least moderately exciting, but not problematic power level for a rare.
