Made Indentured Servitude.
I'm sorry. By "off-color activation," I meant having a two-color card with an activated ability from a third color, thus making it clearly Aeran.
I think a "cycle" of mana fixers for each color would be adorable.
Move to uncommon.
I like the flavour of gaining life. It makes a -X/-X aura more meaningful than just "removal that doesn't always work". And the flavour fits very well with slavery, it feels like you're putting the creature to work, and if it can't handle it, it dies.
I'm a little worried gaining 1 life is too easy to forget, but there's several similar to that before, like Pillory of the Sleepless. And the controller is likely to get it killed fairly quickly, which is probably good.
Do you think it needs to cost 4 or would 3 be ok?
Since repeatable creature pinging has been moved to uncommon (at least for
-style pinging), I agree that Psychomancer should move to uncommon and this could be the
creature. I would then suggest that we have a
Enlighten creature in this place.
Was "Whenever a creature without flying attacks you or a planeswalker you control, its controller may pay
. If he or she doesn't, that creature becomes blocked and you may draw a card."
take cost down a bit
It makes sense that R/B is removal. How about a +X/-X effect like Auger Spree? That always feels quintessentially R/B to me.
I tried to think of a way to make red burn + black lifedrain feel right, because I think that's a nice idea, but I couldn't find anything that made sense and didn't like it should have white in instead.
Brainstorming:
Flavour as the oppression of a slavedriver. Or perhaps even better:
Like Stab Wound meets Recumbent Bliss, flavoured as some kind of slavery (but not Enslave).
A reverse Might of the Nephilim.
Maybe bad removal would be an aura or instant with "gets -1/-1 and loses flying" or "gets -2/-2 and loses flying"? Losing flying isn't that relevant when you'd rather just have doom blade, but is set-appropriate.
Although actually maybe the flavour works better if mono-removal doesn't specifically call out fliers, since even though black will always have answers to creatures, maybe the mono-tribes shouldn't FEEL like they have ways to specifically attack flying creatures?
If we want card draw, combat tricks, and removal, sounds like Spin with the Attack is definitely in.
I'm not sure about off-colour activations given this set's flavour. Say we have a green creature with a white activation. Is the green creature a Fungus? Is it Aeran? Is it a Fungus with some affinity for the alien enchantment creatures?
Something else to consider for uncommon is one or two manafixers. We have Nimbus Elf and Aeran Sunrise at common; can we add a
and a
manafixer at uncommon? Or is that too cute?
As pointed out on How can monocolor deal with flying?, sets now tend to have an expensive removal spell that hits most creatures and a cheaper removal spell that's narrow or has an additional cost, and the doomblade/murder equivalent at uncommon.
(I think this is a good idea because it makes the less-good removal more interesting, as long as the common creatures are designed with this in mind).
Can anyone think of a small bonus for this that fits the rest of the card if it increased in cost to 4 or 5? Or a replacement more clunky removal spell so this can move to uncommon?
I don't really play discard spells, so I don't know whether discard players would like this. I can't imagine wanting it particularly much in a mill deck, because it doesn't look like it does enough; maybe it's a workhorse "mill and do something else" card like Induce Paranoia?
But I'm wondering whether this will be a regular 15th pick due to nobody wanting it. And therefore whether we might want to change it. (Or not; I guess each set needs a few 15th picks.)
Re Link's suggestion of mill, note that the other
common does that, Deny Knowledge. So I don't think we need to pigeonhole
quite so consistently.
That seems plausible to me.
Agree.
Huh, okay, my instincts about common burn counts are just wrong. In which case the three common burn spells are just fine :) Recall Return to Ravnica also had Auger Spree, which is pretty comparable to our gold Cruelty from Above.
If we want to follow modern standards then Doomseek needs to either become uncommon or gain 2-3 mana in the cost.
Maybe Psychomancer should move to uncommon and this could become the
common creature?
Hm. So the first is a Ghostly Prison, the second is a riff on Rhystic Study. Yep, both are better than the current effect. I think I prefer the second.
I agree that tri-color cards should be reserved for rare, since we have so little space and they would be difficult to use with the monocolor theme. We could, as you suggest, have gold-hybrid cards. We could also have some cards with off-color activated abilities.
We definitely need some more Enlighten, and some removal, card draw, and combat tricks.
Maybe we should do all of the monocolor uncommons first, see what roles are left to be filled, and then do the gold uncommons.
"UEOT."
Ah! You're right, I'd completely forgotten. I'm inclined to leave it out for the moment, any other opinions?
Hm. I assumed looting was primary in U and R, but they were just pushing red heavily to make the point that it was in red too. But you're right, there's almost no mono U looting cards recently.
But either way, looting makes more sense in UR which both do looting, than UB.
Re point #3, I think we want that many total, but something like 2-3 in red and 1-2 in multicolour?
I agree with the other three points.
This is highly reminiscent of Alpha Brawl.
We were playing with an exile-matters theme for white. Things like Reklat Sdrawkcab and Aurora Vault. Older versions of Woven Life did as well. That may have somewhat fallen by the wayside though.
I like basic idea of this being a Ghostly Prison that triggers Enlighten, but I don't like the current effect. It's never going to trigger the card draw. My other suggestions are okay (I made them so long ago it feels like another person did), but I don't know that either should be uncommon. New votes for cost and effect:
We could have it be a flying Ravenous Rats if you want. A Ravenous Rats that also loots yourself? It's clever... but I think it's a bit too much for common.
I agree this isn't quite right at the moment. Looting has pretty much moved to primary in red; blue can still have it, but generally only if it's somehow sharing it with red (e.g. Desperate Ravings).
