An example of this would be Garruk Wildspeaker, Garruk's Companion and Garruk's Packleader. Some notes:

  • This is a very hard design challenge, because Planeswalkers are very hard to design. Like when writing a book, if you don't know where you're going with it, you will commonly stall out, and the abilities won't feel synergystic, or powerful enough. I suggest starting with a powerful ultimate ability... something in line with a 7+ converted mana cost Sorcery and working your way back from there, instead of coming up with a cool +1, but having no idea what to do from there.
  • Be careful when designing +1 loyalty boosts on Planeswalkers. Most of them are designed to give you a small bonus that leads you to the Walker's ultimate. If your +1 can not be activated more than 20% of the time, though, two of your Planeswalker's abilities will probably be dead because of it.
  • The Common and the Uncommon of the cycle are often spells that fit with the goal of their planeswalekrs. As such, you should probably design them after knowing what your Planeswalker likes to do, and, since Planeswalkers are complicated cards, you should probably keep those cards fairly simple to make up for it.
  • Okay, I have mine. Varlan the Grower, Varlan's Familiar, and Varlan's Desire. This was fun. :)

Here is my entry: Elena Moreau, Elena's Biospawn, and Elena's Initiate.
I was on Gatherer and Biomantic Mastery jumped out at me as an interesting Planeswalker Ultimate. from there I came up with the +2 (which could possibly be a +1) and the -3 as ways to 'power up' the ultimate.

After brainstorming a few niches for planeswalkers, I came up with Gideon, Leader of Heroes, Gideon's Archmage and Gideon's Acolyte.

My entry is Daimon Darkheart, Daimon's Drudge, & Daimon's Revenance. After a bit of playtesting I think I have everything balanced. The ultimate can be brutal but also makes him a major target when he is dropped. His signature spells follow the theme of a necromacer. The sorcery is actually reanimation as its original version destroyed the creature and then reanimated it but this way was cleaner and less wordy. The Creature is a common riff on Withered Wretch meant to put his fellow necromancers at a disadvantage against him.

Hmm - too similar to Liliana's ultimate - will have to rework.

Reworked him a bit, the ultimate is still similar to Lilianas but has a totally different feel to it (I hope).

Namuginga, the Shaper his assistant Walumbe, Namuginga's Assistant and his increasingly funky-costed instant Judged by Namuginga. Explanation on the planeswalker.

Farrnhal, Lifeshaper Farrnhal's Light Farrnhal's Grower Not sure how obvious the relationship between the three is, but...
