Ooh, going in Skullbriar EDH.
Evolution Vat + Ragebark Warrior
Well, +1/+1 counters are gonna be important here. And that vat sounds like something I'd dream up for an un set.
So here we go; let's have something to really make undying pop.
Nice.
A cooler template:
"Angels are 8/8 red creatures with first strike."
Although this does convert noncreature Angels into creatures, but who cares.
Stoon + Sigil of the Empty Throne
Enchantments double up as 4/4 angels; and um, a joke card? Ok; the challenge was to parody the trend for creature power creep. So. Angels are hereby declared to be huge.
Really really all creatures. I wanted it to be less costly than a pure upside would be.
Is this meant to be "all creatures you control", or really "all creatures"?
Bubble Bulbs + Plains
Huh. White already turned Fog into Holy Day. So what's the white mini growth? Aerial Maneuver? Astral Steel? Seize the Initiative? There isn't anything from nice old sets - the iconic thing is Holy strength which is an enchantment. And.. white also gets enchantment fog; always did. So there's the solution.
Only I still don't manage to get a single cost, it's such a stall and swarm helper, it probably need to cost 4.
"At end of turn, if you have no cards in your graveyard, sacrifice ~"?
Name is taken by Death Bomb. This is a nice variation on Pestilence, though I'd recommend it gains the "sac when no creatures" rider that Pestilence and Last Laugh have.
Seal of Rassilon + Bond of Agony
A graveyard clearer (whose first mode I doubt would get used, but ok) and.. a crappy Pestilence one-shot? No wait, that's usually used to kill creatures. Ok, "Everyone takes X damage" is kinda black, and the phrasing is black and makes it sound worse than it is. But still. (Oh wait, it IS worse than it is, because you can't even use it to force a draw because you die before it activates. Gah!)
Let's go the pestilence route. (Because it's that or reprint Suffer the Past)
So it seems my reaction to "That causes tension" is: "Good, let's make it MORE tense."
upcost to 8.5, and make it gain a LOT of life
I can kinda see that. And it's a lot riskier in a draft, with correspondingly smaller deck.
Ok; let's make it a bit spicier.
This is kind of tricky to cost, since Royal Herbalist is one of the most hated mechanics of all time. Not the Herbalist's fault... I like the mechanic... but something about exiling cards in library as a cost makes people's skin crawl.
Which means that the cost for this card would likely be anything but 7, since 7 is a reasonable number... as silly as that sounds. IF, for example, the card costs 9, then most players would call it a junk rare, and be comfortable with it. They only play with it if they really like the mechanic, or if they're drafting, and it's the best card for their deck. If the card costs 6, then it's overpowered for cost. Spikes everywhere sit up and take notice, and feel clever for having 'discovered' a card that looks bad, but wins games. The correct cost, however, just makes players uncomfortable. They should play with it... but they don't want to... which often means they won't... but they'll feel bad about it...
Heee. Fun use of a semi-beneficial cumulative upkeep.
I could see arguments for costing this 6 (cf Purity) or 7, but I'd probably go with 7 at least to start with.
Royal Herbalist + ((C12254))
Guh. Well, I guess a 1/1 is worth something on top of a Fountain of Youth?
And... an interesting temporary critter; it's a 3/3 for
, +
, +
, +...
Sorta kinda like the various clockwork beasts.
Makes a combo if you can transmute it into Sandstone Needle I guess.
So, deplete to gain life? That could work. Exile cards to become a creature? If it was a BIG creature; that could be kinda fun. Let's go there. Using the lovely old tech of culmulative upkeep.
Flavour comes from effect; name comes from that. Cost is maybe 1 too high?
Hah! There's counter examples; but I like the jib of your dragon sir. Done.
If it has flying and is a dragon, it's very red.
(All cats and mice and scorpions and snakes and elves must attack each turn... where they fight; and fight and fight..) Yeah; ok, so it doesn't actually say fight.
Mmm, you're probably right on the flying; and I was worried about it problematically really being a white card.
Not sure whether giving this flying makes it better or worse in that regard.
Mmmm. Nice. Their stuff can still block your other stuff, but has to block this as well. (And will probably die doing so.)
This does have the weird property that its "block more stuff" ability is a drawback when you're attacking, and a white effect when anyone else it.
This should either gain flying, or not be a dragon, BTW. The "dragons fly" archetype is pretty strongly ingrained in Magic these days.
(Also, why is Avatar of Slaughter "Itchy and Scratchy"? I mean, sure, it's excessively violent like they are, but so are many MtG cards...)
Avatar of Slaughter + Flux Dragon
Itchy and Scratchy meets.. Ok, energy flux on demand, on a 5/5 body that can.. block an additional artifact with clumsy wording, I think? Yeah, that was the intent; fixied.
Kinda interesting. Lots of things going on here, so let's start with common bits. It's a big stompy red creature; which doesn't fly. They both do things to combat (one messes with blocking, one forces attacks)
Eh; we'll go with this. It's not the most exciting idea ever; but it's kinda fun.
