Rapacious Dragon + Tahngarth, First Mate
I'm not sure if this makes sense. I know there's a lot of similar designs already, I'm not sure if this is a reprint. I didn't even manage to include the ability on the second card or the third card at all.
(Obviously in most sets the flavour would be reversed to work with +1/+1 counters.)
It could be a one-time choice like with unleash, but 5/5 feel big enough it's worth deciding multiple times if it's worth attacking
Yeah, the templating wasn't good. Not sure if sac works either.
Still musing about emerge cost, not sure what is appropriate.
"destroy it" -> "sacrifice"
> "Make it a rule instead? "Creatures with power of 0 have 0 toughness"?"
That's not a rule. That's a static ability. And it is subject to layers and hence won't do what this card wants. You probably want to copy and adapt the actual wording of the rule though:
> If a creature has power 0 or less, it's put into its owner's graveyard.
Make it a rule instead? "Creatures with power of 0 have 0 toughness"?
Oh, yeah, definitely should sacrifice. There are still cards that combine with this for a soft-lock, but indestructible is just too common.
And if it has indestructible, the game soft locks
Typo, emerge should be 6 mana.
I feel this type of effect would be good enough if the "0 power means death" ability stayed as it is, but the power-reduction itself was a one-time effect.
The 9-mana doesn't feel entirely relevant to the balance since the emerge cost is attractive enough.
Artisan of Kozilek + Resounding Thunder + Sensory Deprivation
It's REALLY HARD to make blue's power-diminishing combat tricks worth 9 mana but I did my best. Not sure if it's too good because it sticks around or too bad because it costs 9.
High praise! :)
I think my conception of "oldschool" is getting out of date now :) Most of the sets I'm most familiar with are from some time ago now...
I did debate that. NOT having some automatic mana production really is a bit of a kick in the teeth. But it also feels like, if it did, there would barely be any drawback in any half-goblin deck. I guess it probably is better to let the card be splashed and tune it another way. And there's not much precedent, but the few "spend this mana only" lands there are recently do all lean to producing
too, even if they'd be pretty good without it.
That... looks pretty fair and balanced, actually. Which as you say is kinda shocking on a land ;) I'd expect a separate "
: Add
" line unless you're going deliberately seriously oldschool with the design.
Goblin Chieftain concept + Coastal Tower body + Aladdin's Ring ability
Creating powerful but fair lands is so hard. Because they're free to put in a lot of decks they easily become either useless or win-the-game. The ability needed to be similar to Aladdin's Ring, and be useful without being impossible to activate. I also tried, "tap eight goblins" as a cost instead of mana. And considered more directly goblin-related abilities.
Why does Aladdin's Ring do THAT anyway? :)
I like this. I do think it might be better if limited to hitting creatures, because I don't know if there's a very interesting upside to this going face besides being more powerful.
This is neat because it works with deathtouch and lifelink, but only the latter when hitting players/walkers.
I like the Bee//Sting, Home//Run pattern :)
Yeah, I'd forgotten that direct-damage-from-creature was normalised now. But the "to any target, but only 1" variation seems a plausible variation which isn't currently used.
The worthnoty thing in relation to Rabid Bite is that this can go face which I imagine is the main bend here.
Yeah, green gets "target creature deals damage equal to its power" all the time. The most basic version of the effect is Rabid Bite, but reducing the damage to 1 seems okay at this cost
For some reason, a split card card Bee//Sting should be a thing. Then why not a cycle of split cards based on compound words. (Ex. Home//Run)
Instill Energy, Bone Splinters, Chandra's Magmutt.
Hm. I think Mark's right that if green doesn't get direct damage, then it just SHOULDN'T, not sort-of-get-bad-direct-damage. But otoh, THIS type of damage does seem appropriately green and it has a reason for existing other than "red, but less good". Probably still not worth being a card, though.
I mean, flavour wise forests do in fact have birds in :)
Modulo Plummet etc. yes.
Although flavour wise? "Giant spider has flying during other player's turns". Mayyybe no?
Satyr Wayfinder (flavour, cost) + Soul of Magma (body) + Daggersail Aeronaut (ability)
Come to think of it "Flying on their turn" could have been used instead of reach all along.
Trenching Steed+Whale
I kind of forgot about making an accurate mashup and just made a cool dragon support card.
