Mashup of Wormfang crab + Face Trader.
Mashup of Rukh Egg + Deathgrip
I originally wanted to stick with an egg motif, but I decided it was easier if you just got the creature directly. I switched from hosing G to W as its the enemy of both B and R. I find it hard to cost this sort of hoser; it should be slightly-below-average when your opponent isn't on-colour, but significantly-but-not-brokenly-above-average when your opponent is.
Hm. Don't think so. This seems fine, pretty interesting. Of course it combos with Madrush Cyclops or similar cards to turn this into a Crusader of Odric + Glorious Anthem, but that's fine for a two-card combo.
Mashup of Master of Etherium + Vorrac Tailbiter
OK, that's fairly clear. Is there a reason we can't usually have haste lords?
Hee. Cool.
This'll only save the game if you've also got an instant-speed draw effect around. Otherwise it just sets it up so that you'd win during your opponent's next draw step.
Mashup of Wartide Elemental and Tome Scour ended up as another card that fits into a mill deck that's also aggressive.
Like Wartide elemental, it uses a number which can work when you're attacking, or being attacked. I like the tension that you might save the game just before you die from an alpha strike. Hopefully this is exciting but not too swingy.
Mashup of Push Through + Revive
Green doesn't usually get "or else" cards, but it seemed to fit here: black gets "yes THIS, I don't care if I pay for it", but green gets "well, you get something cool but you don't know exactly what."
The "different names" clause is so you can't "cheat" by milling your whole deck and forcing the combo piece you want. (You can do something similar if you have two different cards with the same effect, but at that point, you've jump through so many hoops you deserve it: "return target card from your graveyard to your hand" isn't inherently that expensive, it's just avoided to stop things getting too repetitive.)
Thank you!
Oh yes, I remember, I was going to change "creature you control was blocked this turn" to "black creature you control was blocked this turn" if I removed the mana cost. But I think the mana cost is still better. But I wish the text could be a bit shorter.
Hee! Nice! And I think this even works spot on in the rules, thanks to Panglacial Wurm's trailblazing weirdness.
I prefer having the black cost, because otherwise I'd be worried about blue or red "each player draws-then-discards" effects followed by popping a Terramorphic Expanse.
Templating is hard. Maths is Barbie.
I'd rather see "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may pay
. If you do, put a..." That way you don't confuse people about whether this works if you do it in response to a spell, or they cast a spell in response to this ability. (In both cases it doesn't work which is another reason to use the triggered wording which does.)
Mashup of Woodland Survivalist and Citanul Druid.
Not much to say about this pairing, they almost came pre-mashed. I reduced the size slightly to make this competitive when it activates, and added a pseudo-regeneration clause from survivalist. I chose "prevent damage by artifacts" not "regnerate" because it's simpler, and makes this more targeted against artifacts (mostly artifact creatures).
Mashup of Cult of the Deeper Darkness + Kjeldoran Dead.
OK, those go together quite well. Let's made Kjeldoran Dead but with an ongoing upkeep of "cast a spell" instead of a one-time extra cost. I didn't complicate matters by saying "put counter on when you cast, take counter off at end of turn or sacrifice".
Black gets fewer higher-power-low-toughness creatures now to differentiate it from red, but it still gets them sometimes, I think?
I don't know how good this is, a 3/1 on turn one is really good in an aggressive deck, but it's potentially hard to keep it around.
Mashup of The Unspeakable and Corrupt Official
OK, trying Unspeakable Bureaucrat again, but based on the most interesting part of The Unspeakable, that it can be found with Sift Through Sands et al.
I wasn't sure quite what combination of hoops to jump through. Currently it's three: discard, blocked, and search. But I'm not sure if that should be easier or harder.
I applied an alternative cost of
so it stays mostly in-colour. But OTOH, maybe it could just be "put onto the battlefield from your library" for free, since non-black doesn't give you a significant advantage in forcing the opponent to discard or to search your library.
Oops, I didn't notice Corrupt Official was an original magic card as well as on multiverse. Oh well, that doesn't make it an invalid mashup. Although it trains me to be a bit less skeptical about "this doesn't look especially well designed" :)
And oops, I didn't notice the unspeakable worked with Sift Through Sands et al. Maybe I should come back and make another mash-up that references the "search out" idea.
Mashup of The Unspeakable and Corrupt Official
Why is a card called "the unspeakable" blue again? Anyway, "screwed if you block" and "screwed if you don't block" go quite well together, along with a kafka-esque flavour. Although I had to upgrade "return an arcane card frmo your graveyard to your hand" to make it be impressive :)
