Swamp + Opportunistic Jackal
Black anti-regeneration creature? That would be 1/1 wither
Which surprisingly, isn't a reprint of something. I would ''guess'' that Sickle Ripper started life as it, but isn't any more.
Great. Name from 'african wild dog' which is sorta a relative of a jackal.
As Frontier Siege shows, this is fine. I have no idea who actually uses the Dragon mode, but whatever.
I could see this costing
in a twisted sort of way, but green is unlikely to have much in the way of its own flyers to target.
Earthbind + Swarm Meal
A pair of cheap creature-kill instants. Both conditional.
Also - Shock sucks. There, I said it.
So.. howsabout combining them into death from above?
I'm sure it's been done. Green doesn't do direct damage, but it does do fight. A limited fight seems like it should be a thing.
So this is now pretty similar to Hunt the Hunter - different restrictions, but fighting at instant speed is very powerful, so an upcost seems sensible.
Mashup and neither of the cards is Sunstone?
Yes.
By flipped, do you really mean flipped (Bushi Tenderfoot), or do you mean transformed (Howlpack Alpha) or face-down (morph)?
Sandsteppe Citadel + Dragonglass
Triple land (

), and Equipment that grants +1/+1 and deathtouch-versus-snow.
So, we're headed to the beach, to build a sandcastle!
And a pun brings us to the birthplace of civilisation. And to white Fog.
Uh; that's fun flavour and all - but now I have no idea what the card should, y'know, DO.
Ah heck, a night and snow-powered holy day. Night is the back face of werewolves, so include flipped stuff which is all the khans set (so I have heard) rage too.
Actual quote: Now, I swear by the sun god Utu on this very day -- and my younger brothers shall be witness of it in foreign lands where the sons of Sumer are not known, where people do not have the use of paved roads, where they have no access to the written word -- that I, the firstborn son, am a fashioner of words, a composer of songs, a composer of words, and that they will recite my songs as heavenly writings, and that they will bow down before my words......
-lifegain -cost +flavour
Still doesn't feel right - and I didn't want a big effect.
Maybe just the regeneration? Simpler is better.
Hm. 2 life doesn't seem like very much, and the flavour connection to a favour doesn't leap out of the card. And if you want to make it shorter as well, how about instead giving the equipped creature lifelink?
Veteran Cavalier + Dothraki Raid
A vigilant white knight, and a
token maker. With haste and... horsemanship. Which is... uh, oh right, it's sideways flying. I was thinking flanking for some reason.
So knight tokens. Well, that brings up a whole different image - the token a lady would give her champion at a joust in, at least, Arthurian chivalric tradition (which probably never actually existed outside of romantic re-enactment, but never mind.)
The idea being: You'll (win the tournament/survive) to bring the trinket back to the lady. And a public display of competing on someone elses behalf.
I guess we can represent 'will to live' as regenerate; and probably lifegain for the bringing back and 'favour' part?
Stupid top down design making clumsy seeming cards. This needs squishing and simplifying smoehow.
I have no idea how I got here from there, really.
Also lacks much redemption; and really isn't suitably a land. It's just too much of an effect for free.
Nocturn + Wings of Aesthir
Green stompy intimidate - and flying first strike aura.
And still mashing in Challenge # 120 - so. Enchanting things is totally Theros.
Been a bit of a glut of those recently. Equipment is like creatures - let's go mirrodin.
Nether Shadow + Soul Feast
The original (and best) forever returning irritating creature; and... Drain Life for 4. A perfectly good, though uninspiring, card.
I kinda want "Raise dead, four times" or maybe "Raise the next 4 creatures to die"
Oh, and I just saw Challenge # 120 Well, that's cool.
Hmm, I'm kind of thinking the Nezumi Graverobber (Nighteyes the Desecrator) ability.
Hmm. I'm tempted to have planes represented by means of a universal effect. Ah heck, let's do it.
Yeah, but 80% of the time it will be better than Jace's Ingenuity -- how often do you need more cards when your opponent isn't playing any 3+ cost spells? Plus it can be used as a pseudo-counter when that's what you need right now.
• half mana cost increase • removed o's • added •'s • I like • • evil unicode is evil ••• also it's really hard to justify such a huge cost on a card that isn't even realyl a soft counter •
Good point. Yeah, if this exists it should probably be a sorcery with appropriate stats vs cost.
Or it should just be G and "gets +3/+3 and trample", which is an existing card. (Or R and "+3/+0 and trample and first strike"?)
To the extent that I'd suggest adding enough words to let it work that way. "Any creatures currently blocking it may be assigned to block other creatures instead" maybe?
It's a little fiddly in that Giant Growth is best used as a combat trick after blockers are declared, but Artful Dodge is best used as a sorcery. I foresee this confusing new players who think they can cast this after blockers are declared to make something unblocked.
See Giant Lockpicks.
A mash-up of Giant Growth and Joven's Tools, except I saw them going together in a different way than Vitenka's. This isn't very exciting, but it seems like it should exist.
Giant Growth + Joven's Tools
Huh. One of the strangest pieces of proto-equipment. A set of lockpicks that lets you... avoid sentient guards. But not walls. Okayyyy... Well, whatever, it's Invisibility is what I think they were getting at. And wow is it expensive.
And one of the most classic pump spells.
So the obvious mash is just "Target creature is unblockable UEOT"
Which is kinda boring (and exists: Touch of Invisibility, Artful Dodge). What else can we do with giant lockpicks?
Oooh, Awesome Presence inspires! Let's make it symmetrical. I.. guess it needs to go gold.
Not.. quite gelling. Not least because the flavour wants to be an artifact.
Yeah, this is ingenious, I really like it. It's probably needs to cost more :( but I'm not sure exactly what.
Yeah, sadly at the moment you just need to copypaste the • character. I haven't got around to making a nicer solution for modern modal cards.
Also, I like this card.
Um, the * for bullet points kinda turned into italics, somehow
Supplant Form + Presence of Thought
Well, guess I'm making a blue instant, then.
And one is a kinda odd halfway-house between Control Magic and Clone with a dash of Unsummon.
The other lets you counter your own spell to draw a card, or with Storm draw a LOT of cards. Too costly for what it does (you need to have at least two spells in flight, on of which you don't mind losing...), but kinda interesting.
So hey - has Unsummon been combined with card draw? Probably, but what the heck.
Hmm, I want to write "Return target spell to its owners hand, they draw cards equal to its CMC." but.. how do you even start to cost that? It's a hideous downside to use as a counterspell, usually - but a crazy upside if you're trying to mill or want to use it on yourself.
I guess I could combine them together to make Fork++ but that's been done. And it's red for hysterical raisins.
Ok - let's keep the ice part of Supplant Form, blue gets ice magic too rarely. (Because Wall of Ice shut up.)
So what's an ice modifier to presence of thought? "Icy Clarity"? That's a goood name.
Clarity in magic terms is, it seems, seeing face down stuff. Boooring. I guess I could just add 'target spell cannot be countered' but I recall that goes down a ratsnest of "Sure, ok, so now I don't supply any mana to it!"
Hmmm - an odd line of reasoning to try and find the right wording leads me to propose "Draw cards equal to CMC of target opponent" but no.
So yeah - let's give up and go modal. Pure upside, but what a nasty choice to have to make. Unless it's your spell of course, but that's a lot of mana to hold back.
Image: Fire raining down on his troops, who are begging for help, a mage looks on, not lifting a finger to help. Bonus points if said mage is holding an Icy Manipulator rather than a staff :)
Acid Rain + Orchard of Golden Fruit
Destroy all forests. Yeah, colours used to do that, once upon a time colour identity actually mattered.
And a forest/plains land you can sacc for life.
Annoyingly, the obvious mash is Dark Heart of the Wood.
Could make a lucky charm for "When a forest is destroyed" but that seems kinda niche.
On the flip side; hosing all forests nowadays kills FAR less land than it used to. Except in draft, people mostly run funny lands. So maybe a land hoser would be fine at rare? Though wizards don't tend to do that - largely because it's not fun to be hit by one, or particularly fun to win because you cast one "Hose opponents deck" spell.
Huh, looks like the word "Rain" only appears here, and its colour shift Caustic Rain.
Bleh. Legendary land of rubbishness is all I can come up with.
Leaf Arrow + Fleecemane Lion
Flying Hate and Monstrousity. I focused on those attributes, and the common color. I mean, I don"t have too much to say about these. I made the flying hate come from the creature becoming monstrous.
