Edited to just target creatures.
While it may be pushing into Rare and CMC matters theme, I think it's more elegant to me to have something like:
WU Instant Counter target spell with CMC 3 or less, then gain life equal to that spell's converted mana cost.
Over the past few months, separate from this set, I've actually developed a multicolor cycle of "Counter target spell with 3 CMC or less, then (effect) based on its CMC". The red one deals direct damage, the green one distributes +1/+1 counters, and the only missing one is the black one. But I'm not sure it'd be fitting for this set.
See Temple Stairway.
See Forgotten Foliage .
See Seeing Pool.
I'm down with changing it to insects. Flying doesn't sit right though.
Agreed about not wanting to do too much multicolor of the same colors, its just that I feel this land control theme fits RG best, so I posted the few card ideas I had for those colors.
My reasoning for this being rare is comparing it to Wellspring, which is a weak and unpopular rare with a similar ability. This costs 1 less and is on a body, and has the variability of letting you choose a diff land each turn.
I could see the argument that it could be moved to uncommon though.
I'd be tempted just to change it to G. I was originally basing the idea off of Lotus Snake, but for Discovery instead of Landfall. But sin ce this is not on a creature and Discovery increasing is technically weaker than Landfall as a trigger, bringing it down to G seems balanced.
changed from power to toughness
Uncommon card for control archetype.
I think this seems a bit weak for a rare, maybe move it down to uncommon? I kind of dont want to do too many multicolor cards of the same color combination.
Added trample. Could be changed to something else.
Suggested BG aggro archetype card. Supports aggressive creature play.
A mono green card producing flyers is questionable. I do like the idea of just making the tokens insects though.
I do like that with the draw addition it wouldn't be a dead card in the late game, but I could see moving to instead.
If we are going with that, then yes, this should probably be one of the cards with that theme.
While we're on the subject, to be clear, the idea with the small toughness archetype is it would only involve four or five cards that actually care about it, but that these would be key cards for , and other stuff would work well with that.
