The "Blech" is definitely held in consideration. It's tough to make a card like this apealling on any level, even in this case where the creature looks like its saying "sacrifice another creature: gain 5 life".
I guess we're just going to have to bust these out and play them. If sacrifice is to work as a concept, it has to demand a lot out of the few mono-black cards its on. Devour-style sacrificing just doesn't go far enough. If it's still fun, then great... we pulled a tough stunt. Otherwise, there's quite a few other ideas waiting in the wings to take its place.
Really, I knew our set needed one more 'not the usual stuff' non-creature common, so I looked at M2012 for inspiration and found Hideous Visage. The card looks really good, but I've never played it. Seems telling. I have a hard time figuring out if this is worse than the visage. +1/+0 is quite the bump with a small army, but at least you have a chance to block this.
Hmm. I didn't think about equipment. But I got to admit, I like this creature to just be a b- about everything. Magic's probably got room for one of those... though I'm willing to change if anyone tells me to. It sure ain't worth defending.
Yeah. Calcite Snapper suggests 4/1 shroud is possible at common, although I agree it's not usual.
:) But that does suggest that we maybe shouldn't have "even" without the reminder, alas. We shouldn't worry about it until we're templating though.
Maybe the name should just be "squaring the circle"?
I think the cost here is just fine; this is very similar to Mercy Killing (though with completely opposite flavour). It may end up needing to be uncommon, but let's see how it turns out.
At first my reaction to the new version was "Blech", but on second thoughts it might be okay. It'll be something that makes you shudder when it hits the table on a ground stall, but not much use if you've only got one or two other creatures that are good, and no use at all with no other creatures at all.
I like the idea that it can gain deathtouch and lifelink by channelling someone else's life energy.
I think the flavour carries the normally-out-of-pie reach here.
Nice sorcery. Might want to be more expensive, but I guess it's not the kind of 3 drop you cast on turn 3 anyway.
Ashling's Prerogative to the rescue! :P (Specifically its reminder text.)
Nice twist on Doom Blade, losing artifacts but gaining black-and-X gold cards. Good in the set.
Same ability as Retromancer and Ashenmoor Liege. Quite nasty at common; basically means the opponent will have to chump block it. But that's fine, as it's a Cruel Edict that hits for 4 if you don't have any.
Also those two cards open up the question of whether we want this to be equippable, i.e. whether we add "an opponent controls" to this.
It's fine to leave chain as it is and worry about templating later.
"When you cast this spell, you may cast another card from your hand with CMC <=4 without paying its mana cost" although that's a bit long? And yeah, ideally it would avoid 0-cost things, but we should be able to work something out later.
I'm not sure about P/T. I chose even/odd so there'd be the symmetry of them both counting the lowest possbile number, but it probably doesn't make much difference. I find it hard to believe people are confused whether 0 is even (you can argue that it's not a number) but I know that that actually isn't obvious if you're not used to maths.
Oh, also one more thing. Should this card say "odd power, even toughness"? It would let us bypass questions about whether zero is an even number...
Reach seems a good idea to me. If black normally gets a few fliers, getting a reach creature instead seems reasonable, and it very much fits the flavour.
I generally support the knocking into shape you've suggested on other cards too.
I don't know. Part of the oddity of they way you wrote it is that I can cast this spell before combat, get into combat, do a bunch of stuff after combat, then play my spell for free. Even if you don't change phases that can be jarring. What if the Chain spell was need to trigger a "Draw a card" effect, you drew a card, it had a casting cost of 4 or less, so you played it for free? Does that feel wrong to you?
I think, ideally, you'd want both spells to go off at the same time (the order means nothing to me, however). Failing to be able to do that, though, I think I like your method better than mine, Vitenka.
Alright. Did some serious editing and fiddling. I also accidently included 14 cards... I forgot to code one that I had edited, and needed to go back and add it. That's okay, though, since black is still a work in progress, but now we got a something to work with here. There's been a number of changes on many cards, so you might want to poke through them. Besides the two fortification tutors and two fortification helpers, we've added:
Oh, and Monument Builder changed so much that I had to rename it Wicked Slave Driver.
The set felt like it needed a simple sorcery for slot 13, so I made one. The idea is that the Gorgon master is granting it's ability to turn creatures to stone to all of its minions. This is bound to be one hell of a whopper if you get a pile of minions on the table, and does a good job expressing why Serve Through Death is a great card as is.
The simplest would be:
Chain 4: You may cast the next spell this turn without paying for it, as long as its CMC is 4 or less.
Doesn't put it on the stack before this spell; but does it actually matter?
Yay! I figured out how to get Numerological Persecution in the set by giving it the "Expensive creature kill slot" and attaching it to a spiced up version of Link's Gorgon Hierarch.
This version of Chain is a descendant of the Heirarch and should be of greater focus than the actual ability on the card. Unlike Link's card which asked for black creatures, this thing tags along anything as long as it is cheaper than the base spell (at least in this set). I know Wizards doesn't like to mention the stack on cards... if we can find a way to say this without using that word, I'd be happy. One way to do that is to allow you to cast the spell, which may not work due to timing issue... I don't know. I do know that casting the spell would let you chain into chain... which I think most people would prefer, and shouldn't break the mechanic since we're the ones deciding what abilities get chain.
Also: Hypergenesis. But I stopped caring about that problem years ago.
Now costs
. The card is a bit close to Chinese Menu, but I think that can be changed if we changed the name to something that invokes dredging things from the muck.
Sadface. Numerological Persecution was bumped because Doomseek seems like a more exciting card, in my mind. I get the impression that this is one of those designs that keeps getting submitted and keeps getting rejected over something that helps the set work better.
I didn't want this card to have the same cc as Doomseek and the cc on that card seems unchangeable, so this bumped to cost
more and discarded one more card in both modes. My mechanic is very unhappy with me...
