A 3/3 for 1 mana with "when ~ blocks or becomes blocked, sacrifice ~" would probably be too good. I think Camruth's suggestion is better than that, and jmgariepy's is even better than Camruth's.
I do like the concept though.
Hee. That could definitely exist in a Planar Chaos set. It's not too different to a Stave Off/Unmake split card. But I think for sanity, it'd be sensible to make our Aer counterspells part-blue :P
People with horrible Facebook grammar are definitely influencing me.
OMG I'M AN ENGLISH MAJOR I CAN'T BELIEVE I DID THAT.
"it's" => "its" (sorry, it's just annoying me :D)
Sometimes it's important to design cards that look splashy and fun but aren't as powerful as certain people might think.
Sorry, I read too quickly and forgot this said copy twice, that is an improvement over odds. But what I mean is, giving the opponent the choice is a definite downgrade, because a noticeable portion of the time, either the spell will be something where opp doesn't really mind if you counter it (if you counter a cheap utility spell, they're probably content that you're both out one card) or it'll be a spell you can't really benefit from copying (eg. search for something you don't have, win the game if..., etc) and in either case it would provide almost no benefit since your opponent can choose the less useful version.
I'm worried those cases will be too much of the time, so this won't be that useful, even though I'm excited to try to play it on something like Cruel Ultimatum :)
I may be wrong, it may be fine as is (it's good some of the time, and the effects are definitely comparable in the right circumstances), and if not I hope it could be tweaked because I definitely like it.
Interestingly, this could probably also be
or
.
Whenever I set out to build a common, I end up with... not a common.
This could alternately be "First strike. Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a creature, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn."
You're right, it's probably better without evasion. Jack, blue usually has at least one miller, I think, so we should probably follow suit with that. It doesn't need to be a theme.
Mana Burst is definitely just a throwaway title. Anyway, I guess I don't understand why it's less powerful than odds. Is it purely because Odds has the other option, being a split card?
I agree with you, I like "Mana Burst" (though I still prefer Snakefoil) and want to print it as is, but it's a bit like Odds from Odds // Ends but less powerful, so it probably wouldn't actually be very useful in play. And the other options seem reasonable, but none seem perfect.
I think copying a permanent spell works under the rules but has always been avoided because most players wouldn't know how it worked, and it would need a "clone" token which is a bit confusing. So I'd like to try that (it would certainly make the spell playable), but it probably wouldn't work in the end. Perhaps do a different color creature-only version "exile target creature unless..."?
I like this idea too.
and hot springs where said flaming crevices are close to the surface. Could also have some fun with Coldfire bluish flames that burn through extreme cold rather than heat. Picture a Blazing Fire Elemental, now picture it burning blue and wreather in icy clouds of mist/fog - very "alien'.
We could revisit things like Frostling and Frostwielder, maybe not as direct reprints but as ideas/inspirations.
I like that suggestion, though my first compulsion was to dislike it. It's a nice change of flavor for red, though, which has had icy flavor in the past, but not nearly as often as volcano-land.
The mention of caves full of devils makes me envision and underground network of flaming crevices.
or have it etb with 3 +1/+1 counters and it gives them out when blocked/blocking, preventing damage at same time? and lose regen.
Maybe it's a 3/3 for
and it passes out the +1/+1 counters when it is blocking or blocked? That makes it good, but trumpable very fast.
I was thinking about this on the way home. My first thought was "If each 'Continent' is seperated, shouldn't red be a world of volcanoes?" Then I realized that that was a terrible idea, since it has been done over and over again with red.
But, the exact opposite, a barren icy wasteland in a world more akin to our Antartica has come up a few times in Red, and still seems fresh to me. Also, if we went with an ice continent for red, we could have Yetis. Yetis are pretty cool, and I once talked to a Yeti, and he told me that he really enjoyed attacking with a bunch of his friends.
Oh, and icy wastes doesn't mean we can't have caves full of Devils. That works for me here, too.
I second the 'counter target non-blue spell' idea. Whoever came up with that first must be one cool dude. ;)
