It's not actually a Kodama's Reach / Exploding Vegetables. It's two lands, yes, but the card itself is one of them; it's only digging out one land. It's more like Farseeker Elf or Kor Cartographer. Or on the "land that gives you two mana" front, it's like Izzet Boilerworks and friends.
Given that green gets this ability more than other colours, I think the Cartographer's cost is about what nongreen should pay. So I think requiring
is okay, if it's from other lands. Which means either
, or
and ETBT.
Alternatively, "As long as ~ is untapped", might make a cleaner card. Personally, I think the card is too strong, though. You've got to remember, that most cards that search through your library for a land set you back a card when you cast them. On Round three, you play this land and get something better than Kodama's Reach in mono-blue, since it put both lands directly onto the battlefield without using a spell in the process. I would suggest, at the very least, raising the cost to
, but suspect that it would only be fair at
, when it is officially past the cost of Explosive Vegetation. It may seem sad that you're nerfing this card, but trust me... I would run 4x the nerfed version of this card in every mono-blue deck I played. The ability to turn one land into two lands, without wasting any slots in my deck is phenominal.
To prevent it paying for its own ability, you could reword it to read:
: Add
to your mana pool.

,
: Search your library for an Island card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Use this ability only if Alluvial Wash entered the battlefield this turn.
So, is this too good? Particularly since it can pay for its own cost?
Because I find this funny.
Changed colors.
Ah, sorry. Yes, I assumed you were trying to solve the "remember which mode" problem -- if you're trying to solve "let it be an instant so entwine works as normal" and not about the memory issues I agree it's definitely a good way.
FWIW, I nearly had "Entwine {any colour apart from green}" :)
Well, the point is that the +1/+1 counters can be used as a mnemonic. To be properly unambiguous I guess it should have the Anavolver treatment: get one counter for one ability and two for the other, so three for both. But that's fiddly to make each individual modal half reasonable for the mana... and also the combined effect is now rather less clearly white/blue.
Hm. That's a bit nicer, but still does require remembering which mode was chosen. (I wasn't going to bother improving this, but there's enough suggestions now I want to try :))
Perhaps this could be an instant: "Choose one -- put a +1/+1 counter on target creature and it gains reach; or put a +1/+1 counter on target creature and it can't be blocked except by creatures with flying. Entwine
."
Yeah, I wanted to do an instant like Alex's but then the entwine was really pointless, and this seemed like the best compromise. Probably the whole point is that green wouldn't really get this choice of ability as that basically is as good as flying (since 3/4 of the time you want to attack or block). I don't think the memory would be that bad: if you had several, you would probably remember you had all of one or some of each, which is normally enough, but I agree they wouldn't print it for this reason.
Oof. Memory issues. If you had 15 versions of these cards in a draft, and multiple copies showed up in multiple games, there would be no end to the headaches.
I don't think the power level is that bad, though. One just have to look at it differently. This is a 1/1 for
with Reach, or, most likely, can only be blocked by flyers. If you have nothing better to do on round 2, or late in the game, though, you can just get a 1/1 flyer. 1/1 evasion for 1 is probably a 7-9 pick, so it can't be that bad.
Ah, sorry; this is another riff on http://multiverse.heroku.com/cards/8869 . I agree it's probably never a printable card, whether the templating and costing is fixed or not.
On the other hand, isn't it strictly better than things like Nightshade Stinger? That's maybe not very useful, but it's more than green normally gets flying-wise, isn't it? :)
Creature spells aren't modal, so entwine doesn't do anything for them.
Who would pay
or
for a 1/1 flyer anyway?
Another 2+2=5 card :)
Hm. How about "
. Choose one -- Put the creature with least power on top of its owner's library; or put the top card of target player's library into their graveyard. Entwine
"
There seem to be too many
options :)
I love the name for this card :)
I was looking for a polymorph version of Alex's "add two effects of one colour, get an effect of another colour". It's tricky, because normally the type-hate colour and the type-search colour are different: black searches for anything and destroys anything apart from enchantments, green searches for creatures and destroys anything except creatures, blue searches for most things but doesn't destroy anything much. Red destroys lands and artifacts and doesn't search for anything. But white destroys artifacts and enchantments and searches for enchantments.
It's still not quite right -- it ought to require the controller searches for a replacement, but the template on that is ugly.
And the cost isn't quite right -- destroying an enchantment is W, but searching into play costs more, hence the X-cost compromise.
Ha!
In response to Peculiar Distortion and http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr171 :)
Ah, right. Sorry. Yes, replacing itself with an island would indeed be nearly useless. (You could also imagine a card somewhere between, which came into play tapped and tapped for blue, but for a cost could landcycle itself instead, a bit like how this looked and a bit like existing multilands)
But 99% of decks would just rather run an island. .. ah wait, I misread it. It doesn't replace itself with an island, you get an island as well. DOH.
Yeah, ok. competitive with the various
artifacts if you're in monocolour.
"Enchant nonland permanent" has been done before, yes, so that'd work.
Absolutely. This is a very strong card.
