Or (X cannot be less than 1)
But that's bad in another way.
Mm. Could also be written as...
"Counter target spell. If non-blue mana was paid to cast this spell, instead counter up to two target spells."
Both are true comments. But if this costs 4 it's just sad. And as a hard counter it really shouldn't cost either. So.. it's just bad, I guess.
Hmm, this looks like a strictly better Double Negative.
Considering it only has a single , it doesn't make much sense to account for "X" that would imply there being more than two which would pretty much only happen through some obscure cost increase shenanigans.
Rewind + 9th Ward Captain
Just about the only overcost Counterspell that's actually better than the original.
And a sunburst of +1, vigilance, first strike, UEOT.
Kinda interesting.
So, hmm. Could tack some creature buff onto a counterspell. That seems like it's not a useful combo though.
So sunburst counterspell. Humm. Could have something like "~ costs 1 less for each colour used to cast it", but even if I can template that, it's still just costing more for no useful effect.
Counter one spell per colour used to cast it? That's really niche; but y'know what? So what. Niche is allowable.
And look at me ma; I made a bad Cancel and a worse Counterspell. Downcost to 3 so that it is at least better than Cancel. (In most situations, it's not usefully Isochron-able, for example),
Whirlwind Adept + Brain-Eating Zombie
Huh. A 1/1 that can be a 2/2 if it eats something on etb. Except it already costs 2. So that's just not much fun unless you really reall need a sac outlet on turn 2?
And quite a stompy blue djinn. Hexproof and prowess.
Seems like a near-vanilla is the way to go here. Just plain combat in the colours that mostly do tricks.
But what specific near-trick should we use? Well, my playlist tells me I'm making a grue. By which you are likely to be eaten.
Deathtouch as long as... well, the djinn wants spells. So sure, deathtouch provided no spells have been cast this turn. Make a fireball, and it's no longer dark; so you don't get eaten.
Name... sure, take something else from the blue side.
So now I have to decide what a grue hs as its creature type. Executive decision - Grues have NO creature type. And they look like... well, it's hard to see them in the dark.
P/T. Deathtouch on a 1/1 pains me. I want this to sometimes survive. Go for 2/2.
Would work for that; at least the first time. The second time, you'd have two legends named 'Squirrel Factory' and that would then go boom.
Nothing wrong with this mash; it's a fine combination.
But I just have to pounce on that "no-brainer" call. You could have, for example, made a rat-mage that has power equal to the number of artifacts... I'm gonna say in the graveyard because rats wading through trash; but could be in-play if the balance is a problem.
Devastation Tide + US02 Crystalline Courser
Mass unsummon miracle. And a colourless stompy which makes mana.
Miracle mana! Nice. Doing that. Alt-mode is a plain old stompy.
Hit random. Got Swarm of Rats and Inventor's Apprentice. Kind of a no-brainer this one.
uh; swap those costs around, dummy.
Sandsower + Syravon Cartographer
Ok, what've we got here? A tap-down spirit for 4, and a wizard who makes sure your lands stay as lands, and don't go off and do other things.
So lock down creatures and lock down lands. Mash to... lock down artifacts maybe? Hardly an unexplored space. Still, something we can obviously do something with.
This edit definitely fixes that problem.
Oh boy it's a bit broken. I'm constantly making these oversights.
It just changes the name of the other spell right? Use it to bypass legendary permanent restrictions?
Dwarven Shrine + Squirrel Pearl
Zap people who use the same spell repeatably. And a squirrel factory.
Zap people who play too many squirrels? Factory to repeat spells? Squirrel someone who plays the same spell again?
The middle one exists already of course. The first one is... what; a sideboard card against Maro? So the third option then; which is normally fairly minor; but does at least work well in a storm deck or something.
It's kind of a build around, I guess? Add a second ability to make it have a way to always work.
And the wording of the first one is terrible. It should be something like "In a graveyard, play, or stack" but bleh, it's obvious what this is meant to be doing.
Dragon Boat riffs on this.
Dwarven Sea Clan + Malicious Bauble
Boaty Dorfs. That can cannon down fighty critters as long as there's a sea nearby. And... discard your hand of lands into play. Itself a mash of Lodestone Bauble + Malfegor.
So, I'm making a boaty dragon, with a compass of discard.
Aww. Image-fu fails me. I had a lvoely one of a dragonny/sea-serpent mom giving a baby dragon a shampoo while said dragon uses a military ship as a toy boat and splashes about, all watched by people on a bridge. It'd be wonderful. But I can't find it.
Heck with it, I'm making an out-and-out silver-border card. This is a boating dragon pirate which is also a boat. Using the 'un'tech of "silly voices" - but making it a cost rather than an avoid so that it happens and you laugh instead of it being "Stay safe, play silent" which is dull.
Um.. The effect.. is kind of crappy though? I wanted to get the phrase "pieces of 8" in there, and also some piraty accent; but "deals 8 pieces of damage to all of yarrr creatures" is... well, that's a bomb. Trinket text is fine, but not as the only thing a card does.
Ok, try something else. Well, it kinda works. Land has now become islandwalking and honestly I'm just hitting submit because this has been sat here untouched for too long.
I'd just move this thing back and forth between immensely growing creatures and be happy without having even noticed the tap-abilities.
Tetravus and Manriki-Gusari
Very strange combo of two vintage cards that probably won't be reprinted. Reverse Damage and Betrothed of Fire.
