Inspired as a mash-up of Twiddle and Stunted growth. Making it a meta-mash-up, except that I knocked it around so much getting something I was happy printing it's not recognisable any more.
I liked Stunted Growth and wanted to add a twiddle effect to it. I felt the +1/+1 or -1/-1 feeling could be captured by an asymetrical boost with a switch. And switching P/T feels like twiddling.
But it didn't really feel like it came to any colour, so I came back to black, with an optional blue for switch. I wanted to make a simpler version that was just "-1/-1, switch", but -1/-1 could only be in black (or just possibly red) and switching could only be in blue (or possibly red). But it always felt like a two-colour spell. Except -- UB is too expensive for a -1/-1 effect. And if it gave a bigger shrink, the switching would normally be superfluous. So I reluctantly reintroduced kicker.
It's surprisingly close to ((C8869)) :)
Unfortunately I don't think this can see print at any cost. It's just too much power being puked onto the table; you can get Grand Abolisher as the creature since it's obviously your turn, and still have room to squeeze in a win condition, all without having to draw any of your cards except this one and the mana to use it.
Hmm. Yes. Reminiscent of Boldwyr Heavyweights or Iwamori of the Open Fist, or Show and Tell. Red seems reasonable.
Let's try a mash. This is Tinker + Grand Convocation; broken artifact tutor-to-play, plus a wacky free-for-all have-stuff party.
I think red is where this belongs, but I could see it fitting anywhere, really. Except Black. Black doesn't like you.
Thank you!
Yeah, Bloodlust makes sense. I think shrinking something to 1 toughness is a sensible +X/-X spell for red, but I think an occasional +X/-1 may be ok.
Yes, this is nicely balanced.
The iconic red spell I think of is Blood Lust, but that specifically couldn't be used as a kill spell on its own!
This looks terrifying compared with Bladetusk Boar, which was one of the best commons in its Limited environment. In fact now that you've made this +2/+1 rather than +2/-1, it'd probably be perfectly reasonable even without intimidate. (Not that that'd be much of a mash-up.)
"Shares a land type" is a clever reason for making this a land aura rather than a creature.
Well, it's in the same colours as False Demise and Unhallowed Pact, which suggests you got the colours right at least :)
OK, although it was simple, a second mash-up of Fear and Longship Rager.
What are the canonical red +N/-M spells? This feels red, but maybe it should be black?
I like the way the boost is balanced such that it's normally fairly weak, but you might legimiately use it as either a kill spell, or a pump spell, or an evasion spell. (Whereas a bigger /- would usually always just be "kill")
Mash-up of Fear and Longship Rager.
So, um, that was easy. I debated not even tweaking the stats. I almost didn't post it, but I think making simple cards is still worthwhile as it lets you focus on the little details:
Nice; how DO you block an attacking island?
The name conjures up somewhat yucky images though.
Mash-up of Fishliver Oil and Silverglade Elemental.
Ooh. Fishliver oil is iconic, if underpowered. What can I do with this.
Hm. I wanted to do "Enchanted creature or land. If it's a land, it's an island. If it's a creature, it has islandwalk", but that doesn't really take anything from Silverglade Elemental.
So I played with lots of animate land auras. I wanted it to change the land type as well so it could represent the mana fixing/acceleration from Silverglade Elemental, but it was always too complicated.
So, I have something that's 4/4, and a landwalk enchantment. I'm not sure if "shares a land type" is too fussy; ideally it would grant X-walk, but I don't think there's a good template for that.
At least, I have an enchant land which may give you a reason to animate a more interesting land. Ideally it would key off colours, not subtypes, but I couldn't think of a way of doing that either.
OK, I feel stupid not realising the problem even after reading Skullbriar.
I decided to just make this battlefield and exile, as I don't think it should stay massive in the graveyard. I'm not sure if that's right -- it seems overspecified, and it might be problematic if it gets any non +1/+1 counters on it in exile that stay on in the battlefield. Any suggestions for improved wording?
"Counters remain on ~ as it moves to any zone other than a player's hand or library." Thank you Skullbriar.
Tricky templating here: it may keep its counters when it goes to exile, but right now it says nothing about keeping them if it comes back, and without that the counters won't do it much good.
Mash-up of Arena of the Ancients and Patrik's Morbid Return.
Again, I simplified both cards a lot to get something representative. Neither card would be printed as-is now.
Most of the time this will just be a less-good Pacifism, but it has the tantalising possibility of getting better.
I wasn't sure about colour. Tap and mind control are blue, but zombify is black. I wish I had room on the card for "is a black zombie."
