Twiddle + Unsummon. Very natural blue instant effects. But no, I don't think it has been printed before. I wouldn't be surprised to see it printed before too long though: Lost in the Mist and Quicksilver Geyser show they're filling in those simple combinations. (Also show that combining two cheap tricks sometimes makes a considerably more expensive trick.)
"White creatures can't attack or intercept" ;)
No, I think you're right: this is much more printable under modern standards than Light of Day.
Mashup of Early Frost and Devastation Tide.
I ignored the miracle ability and just concentrated on the complementation of the spell effects. A couple of false starts led me to, I think, the simplest combination. Has this been printed before?
Mashup of Mountain and Light of Day.
I transposed Light of Day into a more red effect, and made the hoser a bit less narrow and a lot less fierce to fit into (I think) current guidelines better.
The mountain came from Portal and I considered trying to make the card more "portally" but decided I didn't have any good ideas for it.
Mashup of Tenement Crasher and Icatian Javelineers.
There didn't seem much to do here. Like Icatian Javelineers but a lot bigger. Big creatures with t abilities are annoying because you can't use them and attack, but that doesn't matter as much if the tap (a.) sacs and (b.) does 5 damage.
Are you just looking for Fiend Hunter or Body Snatcher?
Yeah. It kinda went sideways on me. Initial attempt sent to graveyard and retrieved from there to hand; which worked but was ugly. May give it another go; probably won't.
Actually, maybe I will.
When ~ ETBs, destroy target permanent. When ~ LTBs, the owner of that permanent may return a card of the same or lower casting cost as that permanent to play.
... Words words words. And memory problems. (Added the casting cost to stop this being an obvious way to turn a thopter into an eldrazi) Yeuch.
Green and black both do get land destruction, just always at 4 mana. Reap and Sow is one that springs to mind, but there are others.
This is a clever take on "semi-removal". "Remains tapped" can be in blue or white normally, but green does occasionally get it: Matsu-Tribe Sniper, Entangling Vines, following in the tradition of Roots.
But the mana-taxing ability is only really white these days. It used to be blue (Propaganda), but there days it's just white: Ghostly Prison, Thalia, Suppression Field, Chancellor of the Annex, Soul Tithe, and many more.
Green did get it in Hum of the Radix, but that's only because green hates artifacts so much. I guess it could get the same for something else it really hates, like flyers.
"Stuff dies, stuff is reborn" is indeed very green; but I don't look at this card's rules text and think "ah, stuff is dying and being reborn".
Yeah, and it never really was. Hence the ridunkulous casting cost. I'm surprised green is being allowed land destruction, after they stomped on it so hard. But ok, it gets the land creation, so it fits.
Does this work as a "green only sorta gets removal" though? Without feeling too much like Paralyse or Oblivion ring?
Creeping Mold is still within green's pie. More recent versions are Rootgrapple and Bramblecrush.
OTOH, Desert Twister, um, ain't.
Creeping Mold + Avyrine Eclipse
Huh, I always forget about this one. It's only a discount of 2 to not be able to hit creatures. I'd much prefer the discount to not be able to hit lands, usually. Surprised this survived all the way to 10th. Anyway; sorcery "Blow something up" in green, and ... a rare blue black flyer that forces instant speed discard (though with a 'you can get them back' catch)
Ok, green doesn't usually do card discard - but then, it doesn't usually do destruction outside of Naturalise either (and that's properly white, dammit, it's supposed to be Crumble that green gets, and that only in an expansion pack. Ok, I'm grumbling for the sake of it now.)
But "Stuff dies, stuff is reborn" is very green, and so we can, maybe, apply the catch to make a Desert Twister variant that's cheap enough to cast.
and in attempting to find a nice wording (that didn't end up as a blue or white card) I end up with... this. You wouldn't think Avyrine Eclipse was a source unless I told you, would you? I guess I took the P/T...
Auntie's Snitch is a very odd card if you haven't seen it in the context of its set, yeah. Each Prowl card is a Rogue and may have one other creature type: Latchkey Faerie, Noggin Whack, Morsel Theft, Notorious Throng etc. And in Lorwyn/Morningtide, Goblins particularly like dying and coming back from the graveyard: Tar Pitcher, Wort, Boggart Auntie, Boggart Shenanigans etc.
Within that context, Auntie's Snitch ties together two themes passably well.
Auntie's Snitch + Eaglevein Viashino
Sack target director general?
Oh hey, I LIKE that custom card. Pretty picture (I think it's a cockatrice, no matter what the typeline says) and I like the effect too. Nice to use with anything (even 'thopters) but you're always going to want to save it to get even better use.
The snitch.. has a really stupid keyword. Is that REALLY going to happen often enough to need keywording? Couldn't it just drop the creature type requirement and be 'a creature' wlog?
Anyway; they combine to be "You can recast this from graveyard, if you hit someone this turn (with creatures in your deck)" And as compensation it's... not actually all that undersized. A nice little card there; shame it's rare.
I think we'll go with the obvious combination.
The name might need a little work (or possibly just latinising. "rabidus pullus lacerta"?)
Nice! Somewhere between Turn to Mist and Rebuke, with a scary little self-buyback built in.
Eightfold Maze + Ætherblink
Hmm; a pair of whihte combat tricks. That's the type, cost and rarity determined for me.
So, we need to do something nasty to attacking creatures. Aetherblink brings the whole 'comes back' into it; so I guess some variant on that.
..this feels more blue, now.
Well, I thought flying for the rareness. First-strike for the cat :) Maybe haste instead?
I agree it's ended up fairly boring though. Let's downcost it one, see if that's scary enough. ...ok; I thought it already WAS cost 4 (hence my comments on jade) Humph.
downcost
I can see flying for a green artifact sphinx, if I squint. Really not so keen on the first strike though. How about trample?
This is somewhat unexcitingly sized for rare, though. Compare Giant Dustwasp, or outside green, Plover Knights. Making it uncommon would be fair.
Enigma Sphinx Avatar + Harmonize
Headasplode! ... every coloured artifact comes with a free smaller coloured artifact; and green card draw.
Ok, flavour on this harmoize reprint is about lying and truth, and we have a sphinx.
So clearly a green sphinx is in order, here. And... M:tG doesn't have a sphinx in green at all yet. Yay!
So, a green sphinx; that cares about cards and artifacts. Sphinx's fly; but otherwise don't seem to have any real identity. Green doesn't get flyers except at rare; so that means we could use some words.
I think, however, we'll go with just three plain-old keyword abilities; using the cat part of a sphinx for green's identity. "Flying. First-Strike. Protection from artifacts."
Well.. it's a workable green sphinx. Take the 'three' from harmonize and some flavour and done. And costing...
and make old-school
players wince? I guess I'll be a bit less cruel to them and make it a bit more. Not much more though.
Name... I want a green word. Jade. Ah; the Jade Statue/Jade Monolith/Jade Idol tell me that makes it an artifact. That fits the sphinxy idea too. (Reinforces the cost, too)
Mostly ignore the artifact fetch stuff; though. That seems massively broken.
As an answer for whatever Master Decoy or Prodigal Pyromancer lands to really screw this up? Perhaps, yeah. Maelstrom Pulse or Abrupt Decay might be better though :P
Not that I think it changes the casting cost of this card, but if this was in standard, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't pop up with 4x Pithing Needle sitting right next to it. :D
There are indeed a handful of cards that would hose this, and if it goes up against a Horobi deck you probably lose. But most people aren't playing Horobi decks.
