Crack the Earth + Maelstrom Portal
Everyone sacrifices a thing, and another ETBT dual-land variation.
ETBT unless everyone sacrifices a thing? That would be an interesting decision to make for both players; but almost certainly too nasty to put on a land.
I don't think this will actually fly. Complexity if nothing else. But it's a mash and the soc-eng of it feels like a space worth playing with.
Also those backward mana symbols are bothering me so much.
I like the design, though
Devoid seems a waste of space here.
Cunning Drone + Dragon Mage
Dragon to the face leads to a wheel of fortune. And tap on etb, untap on ltb.
Well. I can easily split wheel-of-fortune into two halves. So I shall do so. And drones are eldrazi, so that's fine. Can eldrazi drones grow into huge dragons? Sure, why not.
So.. wow. This is really nasty. Since it's pretty big, and disposes of things that could remove it, it will very often just be "I arrive and blow up your hands".
But hey, blowing everything up is what Eldrazi do. So... you know what? Let's make this a full-blown, albeit relatively small, eldrazi; rather than a drone. Kozilek seems to be the Eldrazi most associated with messing with cards in hand. Size it down a smidge; and done.
Fireball + Pearlescent Shield
XL5 and Vigilance, double-block, and some toughness. Twobrid white.
So the shield is kind of all over the place, though clearly "I'm good at defending". And fireball is of course the classic staple of the genre, albeit this interpretation of it ends up too complex. So there's something both cards share.
I wonder what a twobrid fireball would look like? Rocket Launcher tells me it's legal to do some damage in pure colourless.
So... well, is there any reason to not try the simplest possible conversion? ... Hmm, the original also has summoning sickness. I always forget that. So the direct conversion would be strictly better. Maybe force this to be at least partly red? I think that's for the best. Maybe make it an enchantment instead of an artifact? Yeah, I think that's an OK thing to do.
Selesnya Sanctuary + Application Error + Application Error + Application Error + Dwarven Tunneller
Grrr. Ok; bounceland. And.. a really really narrow keyword. Ok, if you have both parts of the combo, then you get a big blocker until your next turn. And also boosts itself.
So, we definitely have something that bounces. And I think we can make this.
Blazing Trails + Eye Collector
+1 and haste to all your creatures, again if you find some way to exile it from grave. And mass-mill when it hits people. Despite the name, doesn't really combo with Jar of Eyeballs.
So combat trigger for +1/haste? Not a good time to grant those. Exile-from-graveyard to mill? That kinda works.
It's usually a fairly null ability; so I can just throw it onto a 1-drop. "Exile me! Exile me!" could certainly become a theme for a set; but you'd need a lot of support for it. As "Don't exile me, or else!" it would need to be both a more significant effect on the trigger; and also a creature much more worth exiling. "From anywhere" is interesting though. The flavour just wrote itself.
... huh. So I invented new templating for mill (as I commonly invent new templating for any ugly words) - but now I'm thinking that "Sacrifice matters" could be a very interesting thing for the "Exile me!" set to also have :)
Pretty cool! I might use something like that.
typos (was and for instead of X and from)
Orcish Artillery + Plebeian Negligence
Ah, the original "I throw my face forcefully into your fist" card. And far too often effective for it.
And.. an ineffective Naturalise variant; albeit cheaper.
I'm pretty sure we've already had "Fling artifacts at your opponent" - ah yes; Orcish Mechanics. Which lead to Artillerize, Bosh, Iron Golem, and more. Pretty well mined out vein, that.
What about repeatable artifact destruction, at a cost? ... Goblin Tinkerer.
Fine. Ok, artillery that you can pay to avoid? That's a really crap ability. But I guess it can be cheap and might sometimes be semi-relevant. Perhaps to make an opponent try to decide whether to spend their counterspell mana or not.
At least I can make decently orcish flavour out of it.
Boo. Fail.
Fight specifically won't deal damage to either creature, if even one of the is no longer on the battlefield or no longer a creature.
Ooh. You're right, this is indeed really interesting. Or at least it would be if something dead could fight. They can't, sadly, though that does at least make sense. The Comp Rules say that a creature no longer on the battlefield can't deal damage to anything... though. Hmm. They can if the trigger is a leaves-play trigger.
Hee. I liike the red side. Impressively, it is actually probably close to printable, given Amulet of Vigor. Which I also like and have a deck built around, especially with lands like Azorius Chancery.
Workhorse + Traveler's Amulet
It's a walking pentad prism! And a land-fetch fetch.
So a clockwork land-fetch? We can do that I think? Probably not at a price where land-fetch is traditionally useful; but it could well be landfall-useful.
Which, huh. Sunburst? That works.
Also this is a wonderful image for another related card: https://imgur.com/Pcf0QcW But I didn't want to try to give this flying too - it already has twice the wordcount it should. Because sunburst :)
Lone Missionary + Bandmaster
ETB life, and... summon tokens with banding. Urk.
Summon tokens with life? Banding on ETB? Let's see if we can make that latter work.
Huh, trying to find wording; this is actually easier as a token maker.
This may be an example of why decreasing the power/toughness doesn't always lead to decreasing the casting cost. I figure Blinding Angel probably shouldn't cost less than five mana, no matter what its p/t is. Removing the ability to attack every turn is so strong.
I used to have a tournament deck during the Onslaught Goblinmania. Round two, ideally, was Lightning Greaves. Ideal play on four was Ivory Mask. Round five: Blinding Angel, equip greaves and attack. If my Goblin opponent couldn't respond to the Greaves activation, I won. I couldn't be targeted, my Angel could be targeted, they sure as heck weren't going to block it, and they couldn't attack. The deck sent Goblin players into fits trying to imagineer a sideboard solution out of their prison.
It was so damn solid. But I instead tried to out-meta the meta and built a blue-white control deck built to prey on the Mono-white control decks designed to beat Gobbo and Affinity. Then I played against Gobbo all day long. :p
Blinding Light + Legacy of Moths
Tap your opponent. And kinda sorta regenerate a creature as a vanilla swarm of tokens. Both are three mana.
Mass faux-regenerate? Tap tokens? Turn your opponent into a moth?
(art)
Hazduhr the Abbot + Final Burn
Hmmm. Set fire to everything that's already hurt; and someone who accepts damage dealt to your white creatures.
So something that prevents the second hit? It's kinda niche; but it does some types of combat tricks useless. So sure. Let's make it protect players, too.
Twilight Shepherd, flying, vigilance, mass ressurrect on ETB and again when it dies.
+ Quzix Hybrid Unc The name? Uh right - +1/+1, lifelink, fight, split second.
So ok, fight on ETB/LTB. Which works really interestingly, since you'll sometimes be able to get it killed in the fight, immediately getting a second fight.
Image come from my misremembering the name of a really odd kids TV show.
Yeah; but it costs 8. You're allowed to go hog-wild at that point.
Yikes. Combo potential
Island: So I'm making something blue.
+ (((Application error))). Grrr. + White Invoker
Um. Guess I'm making Blue Invoker ok done.
Spren's Insight
Draw 2, then discard one unless you've got an enchantment. For 3.
And Kjeldoran Gargoyle
Flying, first-strike, and... why isn't that lifelink? 3/3 for 6.
So; uh... can I do cardlink? I think so. Deliberate choice to not say "combat damage" - if you want to find a way to make this harm you, go ahead.
Could just deal damage equal to power
Feels like it should only activate once per turn, too.
Well that’s fun. Definitely not a common, though.
Lava Zombie + Anomalus
Unsummon on etb, firebreathing; and huge and explodes on death.
How have I never combined "Firebreathing" with "Deathsplode" before?
