Neat. I was having a hard time figuring out how to express Ibok on a card, and the resourceful mechanic needed a 'boss spell'.
On Ibok's p/t/cc/hexproof: My first thought was 3/3 for
. When I thought about the card, I realized it needed to be mythic, not only because it's got a chase ability that works with a large pile of cards, but because I don't want this popping up that often. We've talked about how confusing Resourceful is, and, while I think this effect would be great, it really should only be weilded by people who've played the game for a while and don't mind the headache that comes with keeping track of it.
For a second, there, I thought that maybe Ibok should be
for a 3/3... you know, keep him agressive because he's Mythic. Then I realized that, no, that would make him a tournament staple. After all, who would be able to resist slapping down a Batterskull the round after playing Ibok? No, no... he had to be a bad Mythic. But I gave him Hexproof, because if you're going to play with bad Mythics, they should at least stick around.
[This paragraph removed because I'm pretty sure I was wrong. Originally, Ibok gave the ability to artifact spells and permanents... but if that was necessary, the Planechase card that grants Bloodthirst to black, red and green creatures wouldn't make sense.]
On Resourceful: It stacks, I guess. It would be pretty silly if it didn't, and this card was surrounded by a bunch of artifacts that were already resourceful. Unfortunately, Ibok works poorly with resourceful artifacts, since it will only make one additional copy of Seeker Gnats as opposed to a whole extra Chrome Steed. Still, it wouldn't make sense to print Ibok in another block. Oh well. At least Ibok and resourceful artifacts belong in the same theme deck.
There have been 4-mana 2-power artifact flyers before with minor or expensive other abilities. Drill-Skimmer springs to mind, as does the rather powerful Skinwing. I think this is nice as is.
Tough cc. I gave these guys vigilance, because it wouldn't feel very good without something else. And the vigilance, while useful, isn't particularly powerful. Still, I wonder if black would be okay with something like a 2/2 flyer with vigilance and Phantom Tiger's ability... maybe the vigilance is too much.
Wurmcoil Engine is indeed stupidly overpowered and incredibly annoying. It was called "the sixth Titan" by a number of tournament players.
This is indeed a pretty good common, but I'd say it's printable.
Even unflickered it's a 6/6 for colourless 6... Yeah, I can see running that sometimes. Where wurcoil is.. wow. Utter brokenness. Why would anyone not run four of those? Regardless of what else the deck is meant to be doing; the opponent MUST deal with it; probably three times.
Oh yeah, they won't run four because it's mythic KaChing! Stupid broken mythics.
Eh. Just can't figure out a good flavor text for this card. Guess I'll have to do it later.
Also, this card's pretty strong for common and colorless... which goes a long way to explain why Wurmcoil Engine is so freakin' broken.
I was afraid this might be the case. It's kind of a lot like Tumble Magnet, I suppose. By the time you've gone through the 'charges' you already got what you want out of it.
Well, I'm willing to go to an activation of
, I suppose, with a cost of
. It don't make me happy, but I'd rather the cards look right.
I fear this is a bit too much better than Jayemdae Tome. It's also four cards of card advantage on a common!
If this was "draw one card" for
/
, it'd be a gradual version of Courier's Capsule. But I'm not sure it's possible to cost it fairly as a common while drawing 2 cards each time.
Simple design. This is just one of the 'Shimmering Glasskite' models I mentioned. This also reminds me that I need to toss in a cheap bounce spell for these guys. People are going to do it anyway, I might as well give them the best tool for the mechanic.
I was planning on making some straightforward 'Resourceful' cards that acted more like Shimmering Glasskite in that you need two pieces of removal, but the ability is fairly straightforward... but I didn't want people to think we couldn't do some fancy stuff with it, either. So here's a 'now and later' card. I'll probably stick a few more in the file by the time I'm done.
Oh, absolutely. It's not even especially complex; it works like a +1/+1 counter you can move around at sorcery speed. I'd love it for an MTGO-only set, and if there was some way to make it work on paper that I haven't thought of, I'd be all for it.
Ah. Yes. They do have casting costs. Alright, no tokens.
For what it's worth, I'm not planning to do anything crazy here. I kind of expect Dueling Scimitars to be the height of complexity in the common and uncommon slots... and, honestly, that's not much more complex than "A 1/2 green spider creature token with deathtouch". It's definately something in the back of my mind as I go along, though.
