I kind of like 5 over 6. 5 screams WUBRG! and you feel like you did something wrong unless you get full value. 6 is a bit more flexible. You obviously want wubrg, but there isn't as much stress, since it isn't so efficient.
It makes me sad to just erase dead cards instead of editing to their new forms.
But yes, the Sunburst-Overrun Bot was retired.
Opinions on whether it's aesthetically unpleasant that this costs 6 instead of 5? I chose 6 simply because it felt more balanced according to which colors regularly get Canyon Minotaurs.
Gosh, that's a bit different to how it used to me. Makes my Overrun comment look a bit out-of-left-field :)
(Previous comments refer to when it was "Gain 3 mana usable only on coloured spells)"
Changed it to a Power Armor variant.
In addition to screwing with counterspells, this also messes with the order of the stack, which I think is very cool.
Now if this somehow had Split Second... only seems really useful in multiplayer counterwars, but still.
Right, I recognize that ultimately it's just a silly card, but I know there have been moments where there's a complex stack of spells and activated abilities that has had me wishing "hmmm, if only that spell on the bottom would resolve first". And in this set in particular, it can potentially enable or disable Melody effects.
Seems too tricksy for being too infrequently being useful compared to "Target spell is not countered after all" (or, probably, would have to be worded 'is uncounterable) and "Counter target spell that counters a spell" (which itself gets changed to the simpler "counter target instant")
Still, yeah, it probably works - reigniting the whole "But it's too late, it's already dead" arguments just seems like a bad idea to me.
It has some other functions as well... if you're opponent plays a lot of Giant Growths and you play a lot of Lightning Bolts, you'll find it useful. I can think of very few situations where a straight up Cancel (not counting the casting cost) wouldn't be a better choice, though. Multiplayer shenanigans? Circumventing Last Word? It's probably too expensive for what it does... but is probably fair. seems... well... I don't think I'd want it to be cheaper than Gainsay.
So, I'm sure someone must have come up with this design before and decided it just doesn't work as intended, but I thought I'd post it here and see what the Multiverse Brain Trust can tell me regarding its functionality.
And assuming it does work, anyone have thoughts on whether it'd be better served in a different color? In theory, it functions like a counterspell against counters, which is more green/red, but the fact that it rearranges the stack seemed very blue.
Outside the combo enabling, I like the idea of sneaking as many sinkable activation costs with this card as I possibly can. Even if I'm not trying to "Glimpse of Nature, Goodnight." my opponent, I think it would be fun to match this card with things like Crystal Ball and Simic Guildmage.
Though "spell" certainly appears quite a bit, I felt it fit G/U better due to the combination of Ramp, Card Draw, and "Recycling". The middle ability was Glimpse of Nature at one point to better sell that position, but the importance of general spell-casting in the set pushed me to change it to a general refill effect.
And yes, this is a very dangerous combo-enabler, which is why it has no defensive function and almost no value the turn it's cast. It's a lot of fun to play with though.
