Turns out the 4/4 is getting printed in M13 as Roaring Primadox or something to that effect.
So this into Blazing Shoal exiling Greater Gargadon would just about kill?
Guess it's a good thing they banned Shoal.
When it's on the stack, it takes the chosen X into account, so the Shoals are probably the easiest ways to generate spells that cost 6 without having to wait for the mana to come flooding in.
Doesn't Blazing Shoal have CMC 2?
Not quite as effective a Blazing Shoal target as infect creatures are, but...just about gets there.
Jace's Phantasm suggests that WotC was interested in shaming Flying Men as well.
Just to be clear, I wasn't dismissing the suggestion that this is perhaps inappropriately costed.
In the context of Red's curve, would probably be preferable, as Wasteland Fiend is already sitting at . But I'm wary of heavy colored costs in partially multicolor set.
It might best to evaluate the cost and effect in relation to the other Mythic legends:
W: Genma, Vastal Arbiter U: Karos, Regent of Themestria B: Immortal Ahriman G: Pelora, Hand of Creation
I think Genma and Immortal Ahriman are in relatively safe-but-exciting form. Genma is pushed for Constructed purposes, but not a severe bomb in limited, just an annoyance; Ahriman is a huge limited bomb, but hard to cast and in a weak color. (Note: I should probably make Ahriman's ability require tapping...)
You know, the funny thing about Gisela is, that for a time, she had the highest community rating out of all the cards in Magic the gathering. I know, because I was doing an article on the 10 cards that had the lowest rating, and I flipped the numbers to check it out. That, of course, was because she was the new hotness... and almost every person out of the 40 that voted on her gave her 5 stars.
But, while this card doesn't have Gisela's spectacular damage rebuffing ability, it does kill an opponent with a single swing and a Shock. That's 23 damage. Zap gives you 19... very close, but no cigar. It's certainly scary... so, yeah, the visceral impact is huge. I also wonder what people would cost a straight up 15/5 flyer.
I, however, didn't suggest this card should cost 8, and I don't think Dude did, either. I think he was expressing that it should be , which seems fair. It seems better than every 7 drop I know that doesn't have a self-preservation clause, but almost every 8 worth playing I can think of comes with either a self-preservation clause, or nets you card advantage. Then again, if you're a 'one swing evasion win', then maybe you do deserve 8. What do I know?
Heh, I'm somewhat surprised you guys feel this way. I'm pretty sure Gisela, Blade of Goldnight trumps this straight up, but maybe the simpler card text makes this look scarier because you don't get bored of deciphering the tiny text.
Shivan Dragon is definitely playable, though not a powerhouse. Akroma, on the other hand, is just overkill.
I think this card should probably cost triple-.
Yowza! This is the first time I've seen this card, and I got to admit, it makes an impression. It does make me wonder what Wizards would cost a 5/5 flying, double striking dragon with no bonus ability... I assume Shivan Dragon isn't good enough now... though he could get reprinted for nostalgia value. Hmmm... it's also interesting comparing this to Akroma, Angel of Fury to see what Wizards thinks is a fair cost 'dragon'.
Upped to 7cc from 6cc for the sake of fun.
The Red Wizard Mentor!
Continuing with incorporating suggestions from Havelock's article. This looks pretty cool and fits the set's themes, interestingly enough.
I'm incorporating suggestions from Havelock's challenge on Goblin Artisans re: Red Abilities. Like the flavor on this now much more. Felt more red if it's not a "may" ability.
Upped activation cost for "suspense".
Reminds me of Crystal Ball, except fateseal rather than scry.
Forgot to change the cost. This is supposed to be intentionally bad.
Heh. I don't know what the card was like before the edit, but I was going to point out that "Fateseal 1" every turn on a artifact was probably too cheap. I'd point to Wand of Denial, but I admit that that is a very old card, and can't be relied upon for modern casting cost evaluation. I do know, however, that if you play this on turn one, then two more on turn 2, that your opponent should lose that game, never drawing anything but land, or dead spells. Probably shouldn't be common at the very least.
The previous version had a Delve-oriented activated ability that was inappropriate. Battle Hymn-with-a-body seems safe.
Right, the dream is obviously to snag a 3-for-1 by flashing this in mid-combat and blocking a 2/3 (hence rare), but more often than not it should be a white Shriekmaw.
