Boldwyr Intimidator was the inspiration for this idea. Was just wondering what kinds of things you guys would come up with.
Trader's Guildmaster
I think the merchant subtype could be cool, and yes, many creatures could / should be retconned as 'merchants'.
Huh; Ocean Depths reminded me of my old creation - Peg-Finned Pete. Shark that cares about sharks.
I tinkered with an idea though the investment seemed to steep for a set that isn't planned to include a tribal component: Gentle Missionary and Flameslinger Missionary Sacred Frenzy Rage of Taalmi. Admittedly there's no flavor difference from clerics, and cultist was only chosen as a type to place an emphasis on conversion.
Added Ahmik Logslogger. Because Magic needs Beaver People, I guess.
I'm still surprised Magic doesn't have Hares / Rabbits or Mice / White Rats haha.
It does have some rabbits :)
Revolutionary Leader, courtier.
Chief Courier messenger
Immature Dragon
Hillway Shepherd, herder, sheep
I made Master of Indentures, Landowner's Representative and Callous Landowner.
Coal Miner with "Miner".
Although I need to get to some types that specifically matter, like in Boldwyr Intimidator, not just exist.
@ Link: I like the Contract mechanic. Serf reminds me a bit of 'Minion' but is much more specific (as in, Minion sounds like it could be an evergreen creature type, whereas Serf sounds set specific.)
@ Jack V: They're OK designs, but they don't blow me away. I was really hoping to see something a bit more serious (some feel very 'Un' to me.) For example, creatures like the Naga or Aetherborn felt right to me, and gave WotC new creature types to play with.
Also, does anyone know why Viashino are called Viashino instead of 'Lizard' people? Why are Avens 'Birds' and not Aven? Why isn't 'Naga' also a 'Snake' or 'Serpent'? Weird world we live in.
Considering where Naga originate, I'm not surprised that Seshiro the Anointed is a snake, but Sidisi, Brood Tyrant is not. There's a lot more to the original Indian myth of nagas than "They're snake-people". It would kind of be like saying Djinn are technically Spirits, and lumping them together.
Viashino, however, are probably Viashino because they were Viashino in 1998, well before the great creature type update. That said, I can get behind an argument for not making them base lizards. They always reminded me of Jurassic Park's version of Velociraptors, and I'm not down for calling dinosaurs lizards.
Mad Evolutionist. Not very serious, I know.
I never played with Blodwyr Intimidator; I forgot it was in Lorwyn/Morningtide to work with shapeshifters. That makes more sense why it works like that :)
But I'm still struggling to think of examples where that sort of type-imposing shenanigans make sense. It might be:
And of course it usually needs to be "until end of turn" because otherwise its too difficult to track. That's some thoughts but I'm still struggling to turn them into cards.
Queen of Nothing
Here are my examples:
Fieldshed Brownie & Cottontail Hare
Mistress of Reflections
Looking through obscure creature types. We really couldn't combine Homarid and Camarid? Or Elk and Caribou? Was "Sand warrior" originally its own type, I note now that, slightly out of the normal way of things, "sand warrior" tokens are tokens of both sand and warrior type :)
The weird part about Elk and Caribou (and moose for that matter) all belong to the deer family, so we could just call them Deer. Of note: Magic officially has 0 Creature--Deer cards, and 12 with Creature--Elk.
Dune-Brood Nephilim also creates Sand creatures (that aren't Warriors) because why not, I suppose. Sand Golem, sadly, is just a golem.
@ Mal: I actually think the Mad Evolutionist is a cool card.
@ Jack V: I like the Mistress of Reflections, but it should be noted that creature types in the text box are always capitalized. :)
@ jmgariepy: I would like to see 'Deer' in Magic. Talking about 'Sand' creatures got me thinking... basically all creature types are either 1) the kind of creature, or 2) a profession or class of the creature, i.e. Knight, Wizard, Rogue, etc. So the idea of classifying creature types by 'material', i.e. 'Sand', 'Wood', 'Glass', etc. might be worth exploring further.
