SadisticMystic had a mini-rant about Aqueous Form over on Cloak of Jace.
Yesterday, I found out why Invisibility doesn't get reprinted. Wow. Aqueous Form blows it out of the water.
Yes to both the joke and the reference. Didn't realise all the existing ones only counted elves. Maybe this is slightly overcosted, I guess?
"Shrine Philosopher" being a joke on Traveling Philosopher being a grizzly bear?
This is pretty interesting. Reminiscent of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx (presumably what your Theros reference was alluding to?); also reminiscent of Cabal Coffers and Crypt of Agadeem for that matter. For actually counting creatures, this isn't as good as Gaea's Cradle, which is good because that card is broken in half. It's more flexible than Priest of Titania / Elvish Archdruid though, which is a pretty good spot to be in. This would be fairly popular if printed.
Btw, Shock Troops is taken. They even cast Shock!
Good point. I guess it's hard for it to be better than Lava Spike. But something pushed it up to uncommon later. In fact, I wonder if it's not rarity, but that wizards have been reducing the number of these.
Fair point :)
Given the single-mana cost was also on Slaughterhorn and Rubblebelt Maaka, I think Skinbrand Goblin's bloodrush cost is just "we can't go any cheaper than 1 mana and still require it to be red" :)
Spark Elemental was common originally.
Like Skyshroud Troopers or Elvish Aberration. Heh - or Princess Lucrezia or Riven Turnbull. Which show that blue has precedent :P
get rid of colons
Yeah, I don't know why I didn't. I think I barely played with it, but just found it confusing that an important mode of the card was buried in the rules text. I don't know why I found that worse than other "discard this: " effects.
Not sure about cost. That would make it better than Skinbrand Goblin, but that wasn't a very strong bloodrush card, so probably ok.
Thank you.
I was honestly surprised there wasn't a straight-forward trample-haste-sac at common I could just copy. I'm not sure if trample+haste is too good for common at a cheap price, or if "sac at end of turn" is too disappointing.
Or it's just that at common you'd basically have "1R 3/1 trample haste sac" and that compares unfavourably to the uncommon versions with upsides.
Workaround applied
Oh... hmm... right. Yes, the "power" box is hidden while type planeswalker is selected, but it's not blanked, so that if you accidentally make a creature a planeswalker then undo it its power doesn't disappear.
I guess that is a bug. Thing is sometimes people want both numbers to appear in a planeswalker's field; I think of Jeska, Mending Medium.
For a workaround for the moment, you can make the power box reappear temporarily by selecting any type other than planeswalker (deleting the "r" on the end).
It's a planeswalker now. Only; uh.. what the heck? It's gained a VERY odd loyalty. That's an edit bug, Alex.
Reprod steps: Create as a creature; (2/4), change mind and select planeswalker, hit preview. (loyalty shows up as 4) decide to change it to 3, hit confirm - everything looks sane, but now you make me look it's done this. And the edit box still only shows '3', so I can't fix it.
So... um... is this a creature or a planeswalker?
Huh, I always liked reinforce (Burrenton Bombardier). This is at least less restrictive than bloodrush (Slaughterhorn). I think the Bolster cost could be just 1 mana.
Hee. A larger Spark Elemental. Or an Arc Runner giving up 1 power to gain trample. Or a more splashable but smaller Ball Lightning. Yep, seems reasonable.
Amusing place to end up with the mash, but I can see how you got there.
Mashup of Border Guard and Sulfur Vent.
Border guard was a standard common with a nice flavour text. So I added "sacrifice" from sulfur vent, which meant flipping it into red, and reversing the P/T, but keeping the same flavour text :)
Seems odd to invent this shortly after Bestow is invented. I mean, ok, sure, you can presumably price bolster more cheaply than you could bestow; but even so.
Mashup of Coordinated Assault and Wei Infantry
This had to be a vanilla 1C. How to add a spell effect? Bolster is basically reinforce, but less annoying because it follows bloodrush/bestow logic of ALWAYS granting the bonus of a creature rather than usually doing that, but sometimes sort-of doing that.
Reinforce should have been very good -- you can play a creature which is also an instant speed combat trick that permanently pumps another creature. But somehow it seemed fiddly and pointless. I'm not sure why, I hope this is better.
It's not shown on this card, but creatures with keywords would also grant those with bolster.
