Disembowel? + Slime Molding
Guess I'm making an X spell then.
In fact we kinda have the most-black X spell and the most green X spell ever. (La la la Stream of Life and Drain Life cannot hear you.)
Huh. Red had Fireball and Disintegrate. Blue obviously had Spell Blast and Power Sink. What did white have in X? ... no, Nine-Tail White Fox is not relevant, thank you very much card search, you so broken right now.
So by process of "My memory of alpha is flaky" a white X spell.
Hmm, what's white primary in right now? -X/+X? That could be a thing, though it's kinda 'prevent X damage' (which white can also do of course).
I think we'll go with the more useful tapdown. I don't see "tap X creatures" has been printed yet? Ah, "tap X target creatures". And it's Glimpse the Sun God. Phooey.
Ok, back to ...Belbe's Armor. As an instant. Bah. "Belb" is a verb for this effect now. (HOW is white officially primary in an effect that isn't actually on any printed white cards?)
...ok, finally managed to find it. White's X spell was Guardian Angel. Which is kinda interesting, since it's not just 'prevent X damage' but is also 'and I can keep paying more if you keep trying to damage it this turn'. (Which is, of course, why it got removed in 4th; because actually templating that in real rules is even nastier than regeneration)
(((Search for Knowledge))) + Blood-Toll Harpy
Draw two, discard one, twice. And a 2/1 flier that eats everybodies face.
How about "Everyone draws a card" on a blue flier? Sure; that seems fine. Probably still wants to cost 3, but seems fine.
Was going to be "creature - Mulldrifter" but the name-mash just screams Sphinx. Roll the random flavour text generator a couple of times, and we're done.
Ugh. Words word words words words. Even with my semi-legal contractions, the rules text doens't fit; and the flavour text is what I wanted :(
Combo Attack + Mini-Myojin
Sort of: Two creatures team up to fight target creature
And... your myojin are cheaper, and if you have two becomes indestructible and doubles up your other myojin's divinity. I liked the white myojin; but then at the time I was building a huge white stall deck.
So a theme of "Do it, but wth another creature". And, hmmm, that's about it for commonality.
Sorcerise a myojin? Myojinise a fight? Heh. The imagery is compelling, we're doing that.
Scrapdiver Serpent + Curse of Misery
5/5 artifact walk. In an artifact set. But it does cost 7.
And 'opponent can't gain life' which ... for some reason is white as well.
So "opponent cannot gain artifacts"? That's a more potent forbidding than many. But it's well within white's remit to have such an ability.
The alternative would be, what, "Cannot be blocked if opponent has taken damage this turn"? That could work. Can I do BOTH somehow?
Well... I can. But it feels very much like "Why does this legend have two completely unrelated abilities?"
I think I'll make it gain artiactness if the opponent is damaged too. Thaty'll have to suffice. And gives me some naming idea.
TIL cdn.airplane-pictures.net is a thing
bullet points?
Krovikan Fetish + Strands of Air
Cantrip +1/+1 aura, and either prevent damage, or make a blocker.
This feels like it would natually turn into a charm. But I think it's better as a sacrificable wall. And the name mash sounds like an airline. Make the wall a bit smaller to make up for it getting to be both.
add 'you control' to target; but keep 'owner' on result.
Hmm, these are good points well made. I wonder if naming the card "Selflessness" and having it target a player (who then takes damage for a creature) would be enough to remove the blackness.
Only your own creature would of course be white enough. I didn't actally think very hard about writing 'owner' instead of 'controller'. But maybe that can be serendipitous...
Yeah, I'm going to do that. It's now a puzzle piece, with a perfectly normal use of 'save your own creature' and a sneaky use of 'Zedruu will regret this'.
Turning an opponent's creature into Filthy Cur is flavorwise corrupting the bond and turning the creature into a selfish minion that won't suffer for the greater cause and take their master with them.
Doing the same to your own creature would be voluntary and hence acceptable in white since you actually decide to take on the pain of another without being forced to do so by an external influence.
Further discussion can be made on the difference "controller" and "owner" make in the text of the card. Since this card can be used offensively, I agree, that it is tinged black.
Blood of the Martyr used to be a white ability way back when. Black used to have the opposite with Simulacrum.
To be honest, I'm not sure why the flavor switch happened. Shielding your creatures by throwing yourself in the way of the oncoming damage sounds like something a white planeswalker would do. Tossing a minion in front of your opponent's fireball sounds like something a black planeswalker would do.
I consider this a black effect (even without Treacherous Link). White has the opposite effect with Pariah and such.
Virulent Wound + Hoof and Horn
So a pair of instants. Sort of wither 1, and minotaur-tribal boost which (ab)uses the deathtouch-trample combo.
Both are kind of "Hurt a critter, and the player behind that critter".
I already did "Target player fights target creature" somewhere. Which is a shame, it's a nice implementation of it.
How about a variant on the white 'personal incarnation' ability - being able to throw that around for a bit feels like a sensible thing. Very flexible - save a creature at the cost of life; or pretend that you didn't get blocked after all.
one off instead of repeatable
I kind of is inspired by the spectre; yes. But it only lets you grab a land.
Cost isn't TOO unreasonable, yes, strictly a better bear. But no evasion, and only a random chance of getting a land, rather than always getting you one.
I guess I hadn't really considered the horribleness that stealing an opponents lands early on would give you, until you proposed that wording - but I've avoided the trap of "Don't have a turn 3 chump? Lose game." By always exiling, no matter what it is, the chances of the opponent drawing a land are basically unchanged. If I only steal their lands, they're screwed.
But this could well be upsized, and upcosted - making it a 4/4 bear. That would then be "Get to your 8-cost stuff" mana, instead of the useful early mana.
Maybe the bear should exile itself on success? That's really thematic, I'll do that.
Uhm ,yeah, ingest in
is eh.
How about
> Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, look at the top card of their library. If it's a land, you may put it onto the battlefield.
A bend, but at least it isn't ingest. It reminds me of Nightveil Specter so probably way off base still.
Seems severely undercosted btw.
Quirion Explorer + Eldrazi Skyrazer
Make off-colour mana, and ... wow, wordy. Ok, a 2/2 that mills, and once anything has milled 5, becomes an evasive 4/4. Wow, that card is completely backward.
Saboteur mana? Not exactly a useful time to get mana. (Mind you 'after I hit you five times' isn't exactly a good time to get evasion. So I guess it would fit.)
I think... sab-land is the best mash. Can it outright cost bear mana? Sure.
The wording is kind of a mess. Maybe...
> Enchanted creature has "
: This creature deals damage equal to its power to any target."
: Prevent the next X damage that enchanted creature would deal this turn. Any player may activate this ability.
>
EDIT: Perhaps even ... : Enchanted creature gets -X/-0 UEOT.
No, I kinda agree. I guess you could make it red and justify "Yeah, it's a weak version of a pinger, massive downside - but hey, at least it's cheap". But the defensive-only use just doesn't feel red. It's white; if anything (and again, horribly weak).
So maybe this actually wants to cost
? Ugh.
Blue shouldn't be able to prevent damage like that though. But if you're in the camp that blue is allowed every mechanic, then it's not worth arguing
On an opponents creature it's a really expensive way of stopping it being able to deal damage.
Damage prevention side could make it white; but I figured this was so very bad at it that's it's more like blue freezing. And I still believe in Prodigal Sorcerer.
But "My turn? You have little mana up? Cast this on my 10/10 that you've been constantly chump blocking." is certainly a thing.
How'd this end up blue? Ping auras are solidly established in red, and land freezing is sorta red too. I don't actually see the utility of using this on opponents' creature; being able to ping and drain their mana seems pretty useful
Nafs Asp + Oiled Flint Stabber
Huh, one of the few arabian nights cards I owned. 1/1, saboteur: pay or ping, And... wow, power creep much. 2/1 first strike, deathrattle: ping. Common theme of course being the ping.
You know, I like the skill tetsing 'pay or...' we don't get to see it much. It is obviously less powerful than pure ping, but somewho more satisfying.
It has interesting interations will Power Sink too, but that's kinda historical interest.
So, here we go. Probably best to have this enchantment rather than equipment; since you prooobably want to use it on an opponents creature. But hey, maybe sometimes you don't :) Maybe they tapped out and one big unblockable attack is all you need.
certainly not common; and just way too niche in general. Not splashy wenough for mythic. So it's a (junk) rare.
Templating is hard. Don't do it.
