Mill 13 + Ridgeline Rager
Oh hey! It's that god, only as a sorcery.
And a 1/2 fire breather. Who was in 8th? So very memorable, I do not think.
Can I do card-breathing? That sounds risky. You know what? "Sab: Mill 13" looks like a stonkingly scary ability. But, really, not actually worse than "Power 5" Less powerful, in some environments.
So what the heck. It looks ridiculous, it really isn't that bad - deception! So we have an Avatar of Phenax.
Nantuko Cultivator + Mimeoplasm, Everdevourer
Insect that can frobble your lands from hand, to grow larger. And an ooze that eats opponents creatures to become them; and grow larger.
Some this has +1/+1 counters in some form.
Eat +1/+1 counters to transform? I like that.
Whirlpool Warrior + Plague with Distress
Huh. Frobble your hand, you get a mermaid, you lose the mermaid, then everyone frobbles their hand.
And... a really broken mockup. Ok, force a double sacrifice, and costs 8, but reduced by number of tapped creatures you have. So very very strong as an after-combat thing in a rush deck.
Also, it's a "Sorcery Sorcery" which is terrifically pleasing. I'm keeping that. "It's a sorcery" "What kind?" "A sorcery!"
Although thinking about it "Instant Instant" is even better; since it's an adjective. I guess we've got split-second on it now.
I kinda want to make a wheel of fortune from this. Maybe I shouldn't.
But I'm totally going to. The real problem with wof was prolonging your turn forever abusing it by playing down to no cards then casting it over and over. Making it much more expensive stops looping as much; and I can then bring in the distress clause to make it more reasonable if you're using it for the more-intended use of "My hand is crap. Find me a better one." It is also decent mill then; but mill can be decent now.
I think this looks fairly solid. Definitely not anywhere near common; rare or mythic? Eh; if I had an appropriate legend name to hang it on, I could justify mythic. But rare feels enough.
Card54744 + Erratic Mutation
So art-only. A man with a crescent staff, standing in a muddy field. Looking back towards a cloud dragon. Pretty!
And target creature gets +random/-random UEOT, where random is from top of deck.
So a dragon of unpredictable size? Aww Cloud Dragon already exists :(
So here we go. It's a sizeshifting cloud dragon. Just... don't play with any ornithopters.
Went with mill instead of reveal because self-mill is a useful thing; right?
This is interesting...
Master Assassin + Sunscour
Wrath that can be paid by discarding a couple of cards. And destroy a single creature. Repeatedly. Or do it once and get a 1/1 and a bit cheaper.
So mass creature kill, and alt cost. A dangerous space to play in.
There seems to be a natual way to go here though - as long as it's hitting your stuff too, it's not so bad if it can be done early.
Fine, move from when to if. Stupid templates.
Unfortunately SBAs are checked before the trigger goes off. You could even keep the same creative treatment and make a token instead
Octopus Umbra + Valory, Tinker Mage
"You are posessed by an octopus". Totem armour; and, oh, just incidentally "You're 8/8 and tap a creature when you attack"
But mainly the octopus thing.
And a named non-legend. Huh. And once it dies, when equipment falls off, it turns into a 3/3 rage golem for a while.
(And is ALREADY one of my mashes; from Valor and Id Bomb Huh.)
So, gosh. When dead, golems are octupi? When totem armour falls off, it becomes a golem?
A variant on totemic armour that animates when the wearer dies? That could work. We can flavour it as vampiric. The question then is, should it be dealing damage to the creature in some way? Or flat giving a toughness penalty? That would be black, vampiric flavour - but it will play as kinda just a kill-spell-with-attached-token.
Or we can have it pure boost, and be green - boost-spell-with-bennies-from-the-corpse. So let's do that. This could well be the giant-growth variant for a token-heavy set. (+3/+3, falls off to become a 3/3 golem)
The latter feels more totemy. But I guess the creature in quesiton shouldn't be a golem. And maybe the size of boost and creature should divorce from one another? Because otherwise this is just Bestow. So that lets me bring the octopus back in.
("Obligatory Octopus" +3/+3, becomes 8/8 octopus, flavour text: "This isn't event my final form". It was fun boss0fight flavour! But a rare.)
Which, ugh; now it's NOT a viable giant-growth variant, or even a common. Drat it. Ok, let's not make an octopus. I can justify a smaller creature and retain commonality. A 1/1 feels not very interesting - but it's actually really quite useful. "My creature is big, and you get a spare chump when it dies". I guess make a merfolk? Can it cost 2? For the 3/2/1 pattern? It's a bit of a stretch, but since it's not an instant, not a huge one.
Guttersnipe + Imperious Rejection
All your fireballs also shock. And... a counter-spell that costs 4, but says "Costs 2 less" so it's a flat counterspell? Ah. It's supposed to be "When a land is played, costs 2 less ueot" but the card forgot to SAY that.
So we're doing something to spells, and that thing has the number 2 in it.
I'm thinking cycling. Which technically can't affect spells, but what the heck.
You-only? Or "Multiplayer go crazy"? Like you have to ask.
And.. huh. Cycling is red-looting. So that covers my colour base, too.
Right; good point well made. "Or goat" added.
Shame it can't eat Goats.
Burning-Fist Minotaur + Covetous Dragon
Well, I'm making a red creature, then.
2/1 first-striker that can fire-breath as long as you feed it cards. Or maybe you're supposed to be thinking of it that it can spellshap and cast itself?
And... a dragon that eats artifacts; and it can flip your whole team to a new team - which in this case... explodes their team if they don't have an artifact.
So... well, feed it artifacts to make it stronger. Done and done.
I made me an atog! Sort of!
"I hoe they adopt my clearly superior idea soon."
this made me nose exhale
I greatly prefer it; it's just a really nice way of adding static abilitiies and I hoe they adopt my clearly superior idea soon.
Anyway; changed this to a much nicer implementation. Now it's just a crappy 1/1 vanilla. But so very quickly you can make it.. well; mildly less terrible because aura's are bad. But the thought counts for something; right?
was 9/9 for 9, waterbreathing, flying, trampling, -1/-1 counter each turn.
Why would you put keywords on the type line. It looks so bad and wouldn't be readable on real cards
It costs so very much; it should trample.
Basalt Monolith + Air Elemental
Wow. Two cards from alpha edition! Store mana for a later turn, and a large flying brick.
... The monolith is also a brick.
... Whelp, I just named my card. And since we're dredging up history; there was an old comic strip with the amusing imagery of "I layered too too many enchantments on an artifact". Let's make the result of that.
Whiiich I cannot find. Damnit. It was something like "Animated, flying, unstable, firebreathing, giant-growth, basalt monolith"
Uh, switch
to
because seriously, gold?
So.. I guess I made a junk rare. Someone somewhere will like it though. It is, effectively, going to be 17/17 to the face, if you can actually get it into play though :)
yeah this is the perfect "we jack-pollock'd our set plz send help" card. Otherwise it feels really wrong.
Barrenton Cragtreads + Belet Mantra
3/3, unblockable by red, silly name and type and cost. And gain 4, or 8 life if you have a vanilla.
The obvious match seems to be 'bigger version of something if you control a red creature'.
And is itself a vanilla non-red creature. Um. Ok; so that's a logic-bug. But we can make a non-red vanilla token. That would work.
4/8 is a bit much. Tone it down to 3/5.
This would have to belong in some set like 'shard of alara' where colours are bleeding all over the place. Green can certainly make big token creatures; but green making blue or red tokens? That's some funny world you got there.
Certainly could have been; but Kamigawa era did it this way.
yeah that's a mess... might not be you either.
Actually a neat idea, but could have just been a transform-er (not the new tcg by maro) :P
It might be my font size; but wow, flip cards are unreadable for me. The type line and... the rarity box I think... are half overlapping the text boxes.
reframe
Outlaw Technician + Lingering Souls
3/1 haste, and a 1/1 flier, for the price of a firebird. And two 1/1 fliers, with flashback.
So I guess I'm doing something that makes 1/1 flier token(s).
By general "I started typing and here we are" I declare that to be a cat. Famously, Japanese cats have wings; so we're in Kamigawa. Which means I'm making a legend.
I don't actually remember there being cat demons in kamigawa? Did they miss that out? There's equipment, and a cat-dragon in commander... Huh.
Right, so - Bakeneko (because the nekomata is overdone and Kamigawa always chose the slightly more obscure legend when it could). Wikpedia says:
The abilities attributed to the bakeneko are various, but include shapeshifting into humans, wearing a towel or napkin on the head and dancing, speaking human words, cursing humans, manipulating dead people, possessing humans, and lurking in the mountains and taking wolves along with them to attack travelers.
Because of course it does.
I am not even going to speculate what "Wearing a towel on the head" would mean mechanically. Also, I think that particular legend probably confused "Demonic cat!" with "Cute kitten!". Uh, where was I? Right. Shapeshifting is interesting. I could do a kamigawa flip card? Ughhhh they were SUCH a bad idea. Still, I don't think I did a non-joke one. So let's do that.
So I guess one side makes flying cats. Probably best if that's the flip side, it seems like a "And now... cats everywhere!" thing should be a reward.
So what makes it flip? Catnip. Um. Lamp oil? No... Triggers are HARD. Doesn't feel like plain old combat damage or graveyard should do it. Cast enough spirit or arcane, counters... mehhh. Ok; how about charge up and flip when you like. That works.
TOP 10 RAGE QUITS OF ALL TIME!
Swan Song = Swan Song + Thoughtseize
Turn target non-thing into a swan. And a targeted discard that costs
and phi.
So I'm making a 1-cost, with a downside of 2 something. (Power, life... what else? Discards? Self-mill? Dredge?)
And it should probably be some form of "nope". Name mash feels green to me, so that simplifies the downside. It's gotta be tapping your creatures - green needs creatures for all its answers.
So, what should it do? Probably protect your creatures. From... Oh I dunno; this design sucks and I hate it already.
