Explosive Vegetation mash. Mainly taking the name - but it's sorta kinda land acceleration. Annoyingly, I'd already decided mana accel would be creature-based in set.
Boris Devilboon mash inspired me here.
Trained Orgg made me think "Big and Stompy" (And also made me think 'wow, CMC7 creatures are much more powerful than that nowadays' but that's another story.)
But red doens't really have a slot for a stompy. So I thought "I know, let's make it a land enchantment" But that's not really red.
So then I thought of Mightstone and Orcish Oriflamme and liked what I thought of.
Reprint of Cephalid Scout. Blue needed some card draw; and land destruction matters.
Actually came on this by hitting random, getting Phyrexian Arena, seeing my artifact slot was full and focussing on the card draw part (making it blue) flipping 'sac creature' to 'sac land' to mash it with the set, then looking at gatherer to find out a) my power level was about right and b) something very very similar already existed.
made artifact rather than enchantment; as cities are artifacts. Doh.
Ok, this set ran out of steam. To rekick it, let's try mashup random card with the set concept. Random card is Urgent Exorcism. Well, that one is simple!
I used prot-damage on Oddball already.
And, yeah. Burned-Landwalk is "Walk on lands in graveyards" but probably does want a better name.
Oh. And also, this card makes me want to see the card "Elves of Constant Sorrow" with the ability 'Soggy Mountain Banding'.
Mmm. I wanted it to be a protection ability (as that is, allegedly, blue's 'thing')
But you're right, this particular one is both badly worded and far too good. What else are high pressure sneaky things protected from? 'Light' isn't a thing in magic, sadly.
Flying Creatures, maybe? Sunken stuff gets that, e.g. Flood. A bit rubbish without reach, though. Which blue doesn't often get, and doesn't make sense here.
BTW, "protection from damage" doesn't really work. "Prevent all damage that would be dealt to ~" is an ability, though, as on Cho-Manno, Revolutionary and Dawn Elemental. It's probably a bit too close to indestructible to be on a 2-power 2-drop, though.
Ah, Deep Water. Wow, I'd forgotten that card. It has some amusing rules oddesses from time to time.
No, that's not the one I was thinking of.
And yeah; I'm thinking of bringing in vodalian elves as the blue faction for this set. If I change my mind, I'll probably make it "Elf Shaman" or something.
Deep Water is the one I was thinking of.
Are you thinking of High Tide? Does something a bit different, but possibly what you're thinking of.
The name here is awesome, anyway.
The type Elf Merfolk is somewhat odd. It reminds me of Gaea's Skyfolk, from the same cycle as Razorfin Hunter, whose flavour text is pointing out how silly the creature types in that cycle were.
Channelling Elves of Deep Shadow of course, but also referencing Devouring Deep and.. dammit, there was a card from 'the dark', made all lands functionally islands for a turn. Ah well.
So - powerful; probably should be moved to the rare slot; but possibly a reasonable power for the set?
This is just Sphere of Resistance with enchant land and costing an extra
. Sphere effects even see Vintage play, so there's a case to be made that
is undercosted for the effect. Modern offshoots of the effect tend to leave an out like Lodestone Golem or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, probably for the same reason that land destruction is virtually nonexistent in those sets.
Technically doesn't do anything if you have Seeker of Skybreak in play, while Disruptive Student does... so not a strict upgrade, though, I agree, a stronger card.
I don't know... it does effect you, doesn't it? The comparison to Stone Rain is scary for blue... but this is a Stone Rain that you can Shatter... which, now that I think about it, would be a good idea for red nowadays... an O-Stone LD spell for
.
If all your LD spells are 4cc or more, then I wouldn't worry too hard over it, since this artifact will stop you from casting them, and you can't curve them efficiently. If, however, you got a bunch of situational 3s, then I'd be worried.
It's roughly equivalent to "Each player sacrifices a land" which ... I didn't put in the set yet; but there's lots of other land destruction.
I agree it's good. Is it brokenly so though?
Scary for control.
Kinda. But it's not that often that opponents cast more than one spell a turn; and it hits you too - so it's probably actually a bit weaker. In exchange for always being there for when they do cast lots of stuff, of course.
Yikes! That's a lot different to the Vodalian Mage / Disruptive Student / Disruptive Pitmage family.
was "Tap land to do this" now affects everything
may be cleaner (and follow equipment) by saying: Attached Land has "
: Counter target spell unless its controller pays
."
