Recent updates to Mashup: the Gathering Alpha: (Generated at 2024-05-18 21:37:19)
I selected Derelict Ghost Ship and Random Generator gave me Goblin Raider. 2/2 for with a drawback is getting me a bit antsy now-adays. Every since black got a straight vanilla 2/2, the entire color pie seems out of whack. In a year, the new standard should solve itself, but for now, I'll take "Worse than a 2/2. When combined with green, sometimes better."
I selected Derelict Ghost Ship and Random Generator gave me Spontaneous Combustion. Well, I was going to end up red/black on this one, eh? I did think of something like "sacrifice a creature: deal 3 damage to target creature", but that's clearly not common. I also though of tacking on an attacking restriction, since (((Gladhanding Geenie))) got one, and Goblin Raider is in the random mix, but figured it wasn't needed.
Heh. You slipped in before I got my comment up, Dude. Yeah. I don't know. I'll see what happens with the rest of the set. This guys stats are very changeable.
I selected Derelict Ghost Ship and Random Generator gave me a Plains. Oh. Hmm.. I suppose that means that I have to color shift something white. And the activated ability is going clockwise...
I want to keep this cycle as clean as possible to allow more complexity points later. The Derelict Ghost Ship couldn't attack without Islands, so that's where the white color shift "gain life" restriction comes from. The ship also required a heavy black commitment, and occasional flying does not. So I added a heavy color commitment in the casting cost. It is very rare to get a 4/5 6cc creature in common, so I may have to pull this creature down later... but if it's surrounded by small creatures, I'm cool with it. Also, didn't want traditional Angels for large creature, but this card seemed a little tricksy, and Djinns are supposed to be in all colors...
The flavour text is awesome
Six mana seems rather expensive for a 4/5 flyer. It doesn't seem powerful enough for triple , especially with an off-color activation.
The flavor text is groan-inducing. I love it.
I've always liked off color activated abilities, and this one is nice and simple. Off color, however infers a cycle, so let's see what else I can pull up.
The set should have a common mill card, and this one fits the slot well.
Simple common pacifism effect for common.
Simple White Combat trick slot.
Quick list of things that Mashup the Gathering: Alpha needs at common. Actually, this is a quick list of what all core sets need, so feel free to steal this list for yourself. Built off of Nuts & Bolts Design Skeleton by Mark Rosewater with a couple of personal tweaks and modern updates.

I think I originally had something closer to Splices wording, then fiddled with the card and messed it up. I changed it to "As you cast" instead of "when" because you need to do it then. I didn't, unlike splice, add the effect to the card's text. The game can probably handle this unique effect on a mythic. I'm not sure if it happens at mana speed, or if it hits the stack, but I don't think it breaks the game either way. Since targeting can't happen at this point, I changed target to 'each', which is an unfortunate, temporary solution.
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn can very much be reanimated with Makeshift Mannequin or Loyal Retainers.
Some rules problem:
The first ability can't be triggered from your hand. It needs to be something like: "As an additional cost to cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may pay and reveal Azerin, Sanity's End from your hand." What happens next would be a bit strange. Maybe it could mill as the spell resolves, but you still won't be able to choose a target player. Tons of problems when making triggers from hidden zones I guess. :P
