Random Generator gave me Red Cliffs Armada and Frozen Shade, so I made a card that looks like it belongs in Invasion. I really don't like making the text that small, but I can't cut anything from the abilities, and I don't want to toss the flavor text. Edit: (Looks a little better missing "Samuel Taylor" and cutting out the spaces between "/"'s...)
I fear the flavour text does need to be cut or trimmed.
Sad, sad, but true. Even my edits make this thing too unwieldy, and reminds of the early days of Magic, but not in a good way. making another pass.
I tried cutting Coleridge in half, but it wasn't as interesting, and still ran too long. My own attempt at a similar vein doesn't have that grim touch that comes with Rime of the Ancient Mariner, but at least it gets to the point.
Given the defending restriction, I suspect the base P/T here are rather low. Compare with Balshan Collaborator and Slithering Shade.
Tough comparisons, since they are both uncommons, but I get what you're going after. When I said that this feels like it came out of Invasion to me, part of it, I suppose, was its power level, as well.
Looming Shade is better than this card right now. That is, assuming you like to swing with your creatures. If you like to block with your creatures, a 0/3 shade is probably a little better... but not by much when you need to have available to use it. See also: Loch Korrigan.
It's tricky to say whether this card would pull its weight in a draft, and I suppose it would have a lot to do with the quality of the Sea's Claim effects kicking around at common. But, I do think that if I sneaked this up one toughness, it would still fail to hit 2.5 out of 5 stars, so it's probably a good idea to do that.
I've always liked off color activated abilities, and this one is nice and simple. Off color, however infers a cycle, so let's see what else I can pull up.
The flavor text is groan-inducing. I love it.
The flavour text is awesome
