Heh. We're getting a little further away from Teremko Griffin, but a seagull makes good sense here.
A seagull?
Hmm... Gravedigger in White kind of bugs me. Thankfully, though, there's an 'white machine' theme going in white, and if I change creatures to artifacts, we get a rather white looking card. The names a bit off, but I'm not sure what to call a Griffin that dumpster dives and grabs people for aerial attacks just yet.
Heh. While the shock doesn't need to say 'may', the artifact destruction does, yes. Added.
Heh. Turn 1 Merfolk of the Pearl Trident, turn 2 Runed Stalactite, turn 3 attack with the 2/2. Opponent's done nothing. Turn 4 I draw this... um. Do I fancy 3-for-1-ing myself? :P
Trying to tie together themes, I noticed that Green has a number of Elves, and two Treefolk, one of which help Elves. 'Elves and Trees' matter. I can dig that. Chose 'Evles and Trees matter green common' and Random Generator gave me Thornscape Battlemage. I grimaced over kicker, then realized I could just do this. Didn't really feel like tying the Kobolds to the Elves, but one card in the secondary Kobold color is probably a good thing anyway.
All the Kobolds in set are 0/1s. Many of them get bigger very fast, but that's the only thing stringing them together.
Yes, this ended up looking very clean and common-suitable. Is the 0/1 because it's a Kobold? If not then I'd increase the size slightly.
I don't know about too powerful, so much as utterly nonblack. This is a Welkin Guide with a Raise Dead on it. I'd say that's more likely to be a white creature than a black one.
Looking at each colors themes, I noticed that red only has one common Kobold. Oh, I got to change that right now. Added [Red Kobold, common] and random generator gave me Mesmeric Trance. Neat how the trance already discarded before draw. This was tricky, but I got a card that feels like the way you're supposed to use the trance. Play it, wait a turn, then dump all your mana into it, knowing you won't keep it around the turn after.
Originally this creature had "
: Untap ~. If you do, it blocks target blocked creature." It's cute, but it boggles my mind. Too cute, I guess. I added the +2/+2 and flying line in an attempt to be less cute. Now it's probably too powerful. What's a griffin to do?
Looking for themes in each color, I noticed that black has two regenerating creatures, and one which triggers an ability when it regenerates. So, I decided to work with a 'regeneration matters' theme, changed the trigger on the previous card to trigger whenever any creature regenerates, then chose 'black regeneration matters card' and the random generator gave me Sadistic Augermage.
Since I wanted to keep the base stats, I made this creature regenerate everything when it activated. All the better for 'regeneration matters' anyways. The mill effect was a bit of a mistake at first. I assumed, since this guy came from Ravnica, that he milled. Actually, the augurmage sets up a mill effect, but it's still in the same country. Besides, this is a good "Doesn't matter, but matters" effect. A couple of these and a couple of Hurloon Mazemasters and you got the makings of a decent occasional mill deck.
