Awaiting revision during Skeleton Upkeep
Temporarily Moved Out of File
Decided Thraben Militia suggests White can get conditional, flavorful trample — obviously a horse would trample.
Conceptualized as large eagles (or some such) with exceedingly bulky armor and wings outspread.
Kinda sad that Thalia, Guardian of Thraben exists now, making this a bit more of MYTHIC POWER UPGRADE than it was before.
Hmm, these are my thoughts as to its current form:
The ability is actually quite useful, though not as good as regeneration or something. Due to first strike, you can get the damage in, then put on the stone armor for maximum effect.
As this is in a set with Delve, discard outlets have secondary benefits.
While I don't believe the overall complexity of my commons is such that I need to be especially wary of a couple outliers, I do recognize that this isn't the most immediately friendly design.
Can now hit blockers.
Cutting back on volume of white removal that explicitly targets attackers.
That's quite a high cost for a fairly rarely useful activation. And quite complex for a common, too.
Nevermind.
Vigilance changed to a conditional ability.
On second thought, tokens changed to 2/2 to line up with other tokens and cost upped to 7cc.
Flavor revision.
Doing some rarity shifts; cut off a colorless mana and bumped up to rare.
Oh, it's to stop the White Lightning effect. As originally printed, if you cast this in your opponent's end-of-turn step, they'd stick around until the next turn, and they'd lose summoning sickness. People nicknamed the card White Lightning as a reference to Ball Lightning: 6 points of attacking power for 1 turn for 3 mana. For a while the wording was horrible and involved substance. The new wording absolutely prevents them sticking around beyond the turn it's cast, because even if you cast this in a cleanup step, there will be more cleanup steps until nothing happens in one. The same has happened to the other cards which used to use substance, such as Armor of Thorns.
Oh man, Waylay! What is up with with that wording? (I mean the Oracle text.)
Why hello thar, Waylay. Not seen you for a while - how ya doin? Last time I saw you you were playing with some Thunderheads.
It's supposed to be humorously so, as it's also an awkward way of reimagining Rebuke and the like.
But I guess that's a weird sort of meta-design humor...
The name seems awkward. It might sound better if it were ordered like the other Ambushes you mentioned: "Captains' Ambush."
Name change to fit the "ambush" theme of similar previous cards like Gilt-Leaf Ambush, Elephant Ambush, and Ambush itself.
Changed from overly complex common flier to still-complex uncommon flier.
