Design a card around a pre-existing Magic: the Gathering card name.

1.) Go to Gatherer. Hit 'Random Card'. If a basic land or Legendary permanent pops up, feel free to hit random card again.

2.) Divorce the name of that card and design a new card around it. I suggest opening a new card and adding that name to it immediately, so you don't end up dwelling over what the card was.

3.) Add '#2' at the end of your card name for easier reference on Multiverse. (Example: 'Pearled Unicorn #2')

4.) If it helps you to visualize why we're doing this, imagine that we're creating Planar Chaos II. But instead of making cards from an alternate reality, the head designer is requesting completely new cards that happen to have the same name, but are wildly different in application. It should be stressed that these cards are not variations on a theme; the further away from the intent of the original card while still obeying the (hopefully) evocative card name, the better.

For mechanical reasons, cards that call out the card by name also happen to hit the alternate reality card by name. There will be an indicator somewhere on the card so that the two cards can be easily distinguished in databases. Possibly a supertype or subtype, or maybe a new icon. Don't worry too hard about that part; Brand is still working on it.

Added Act of Treason #2 to help operate as an example.

Dragonlord Ojutai #2

At first I thought, "this could be anything", and then I realised, from the name alone, it doesn't really suggest he/she is a dragon, nor U/W.

And for those moments like now when Gatherer is down for no reason, there are alternate random card selectors.

Hm, I had a good run, but now I have "Ixidron". I'm not sure I can do this one... :)

Gah! It ins't Legendary, but it sure acts that way.

The only take I can bring into this is that -ix is a suffix for feminine (usually, it's spelled out as -trix.) and that 'dron' sure looks a lot like drone. Lady drone? Don't know. Do what you can, but feel free to just take the pass.

:) I was only joking, I assumed there'd be some cards with made-up names and we'd think of something good or skip them, I don't think it matters. I thought I'd have to skip "Dragonlord Otujai" but that worked!

I do think I might be able to think of something that works with the name "ixidrone". I had a look for related words, there's an insect with a similar name. But if not, I won't really worry.

In fact, yes... Ixidron #2

I made Death Denied #2, and, as I often do, forgot to link to it here.

Horde Ambusher #2 I feel this name had much more free reign. I could've calmed down on what the card did, but I took the name as a story. The

Loxodon Warhammer #2

I've been really pleased almost all of the names I've turned up have worked well as new cards. I guessed too many would be too specific (a proper name) or too general ("goblin warrior") to give much guidance, but actually, all the ones I've rolled have been fun. It's been a really interesting challenge!

Edit: website temporarily overloaded, can't post another comment, new cards:

Murder Investigation #2 by jmg

Roborosewater adds Teferi's Curse... I guess.
