I wanted more constraints, so I asked random.org to combine this with another challenge, getting Challenge # 017. Created Hunter's Contempt (from Lorwyn) based on that constraint and this.
Created for Challenge # 114. I felt that challenge didn't have enough guidance so I rolled random to get another challenge to combine with it, getting Challenge # 017.
Wergle. The two challenges fit together, sortof (they're both asking to revisit an old plane), but...! So that's asking for a card that's both one-mana and also multicolour (therefore hybrid), with an iconic effect for its colour pair, that "could have appeared in" a particular old nongold plane. Iiinteresting. Hybrid has so far only appeared in heavily multicolour blocks (Ravnica, Shadowmoor, Alara, Return to Ravnica, and looks like it's coming up in Fate Reforged as well).
So I need to choose a block that wasn't (heavily) multicolour first time round, but "could have" had hybrid cards printed in it. I'm going to take "could have" as implying hybrid existed then, so that's after Ravnica blocks.
Multicolour blocks since then (that don't fit the terms of the challenge): Ravnica, Shadowmoor, Alara, Return to Ravnica, Khans of Tarkir
Predominantly-monocolour blocks since then (options for me): Time Spiral, Lorwyn, Zendikar, Scars of Mirrodin, Innistrad, Theros
And I'm looking for a colour-pair that can have a one-mana spell with an iconic effect for that colour-pair.
Lorwyn seems an interesting possibility. That set focused on a number of colour pairs, but the only gold cards were the rare legends for each tribe. Wizards could easily have printed some hybrid cards as well though, to smooth drafts. In that case, I'd be looking for an iconic
effect that works with Merfolk,
Faeries,
Goblins,
Giants,
Kithkin, or
Elves. Thinking through the flavour of those tribes, and the common one-mana effects suitable for hybrid cards, one natural idea stands out.
So the idea is this could have been printed instead of Lace with Moonglove; or could alternatively be printed in a Return to Lorwyn.
Huh, I'd guess the creature would be blocking if you chose a blocked creature to return.
Buh. Confusing. Does this arrive unblocked, or blocked by the thing that was blocking the Boar? I think it arrives unblocked, in which case I'd suggest editing the reminder text to explicitly say so. Wizards do occasionally use non-standard reminder text when a particular card raises an unusual question, such as Gaze of Justice.
I made Moonlit Savior, from Kamigawa, of course.
See Challenge # 114.
Mercadia, Ulgrotha, lots of possibilities.
(The "primarily" in the challenge gives rather more leeway; Fiora might count even though its most prominent cards are multicolour legends and artifact creatures; heck, even Ravnica probably has more than 50% of the cards set there as monocolour. But I think the intended spirit is "choose a setting with few or no gold cards and make a gold card for it".)
Like Zendikar or Kamigawa?
*Cheshire cat grin* Thank you! :)
Hahaha! Right, yes, not the cost of the spell, the cost of the permanent... nicely done, sir!
I meant, that "cost" as in "mana cost" is one of the properties copied by clone effects, so the more expensive the thing it copies, the bigger the "cost" and the better the P/T of the creature. I agree, the expectation was probably "cost" as in "amount you have to pay", but in magic, "mana cost" has a specific meaning, and it wasn't ruled out interpreting the challenge that way :)
Ha, yes, a card that obsoletes both Counterspell and Dismiss in one shot is likely a leetle bit too good!
This card is really cool, I admit, but there's so much to remember that it would probably never see print, especially not at uncommon. There's no built-in way like counters to help remember what modes you chose.
Clearly I wasn't thinking when I made something better than Counterspell.
It's better than Counterspell itself, too.
Having the first two modes separated isn't likely to matter, since about the only time an opponent will control both a creature spell and a noncreature spell at the same time is if they're playing the Bloodbraid Elf Lottery.
Interesting take on Strive technology.
I note that this is strictly better than Dismiss, because it can be Dismiss or many other things. Not sure if that's a problem. I'd certainly play it.
I suspect that, as a tweak on Cryptic Command that's quite likely to see tournament play, this would indeed be rare.
Hmm. Clones are certainly an effect whose expected value gets better as the game goes on. I'm not quite sure it meets the terms of the challenge though... "an effect that gets better as the card or effect's cost increases". I suppose it depends quite what the referent of 'the card or effect' is... :)
I made Profane Wisdom and Arcane Wisdom.
See Challenge # 113.
See Challenge # 113. I'm not sure whether this sits better at uncommon or rare. The versatility makes me think it should be rare, but the simplicity of the effects makes me lean toward uncommon.
Quicksilver Mimic
See Challenge # 113.
I was brainstorming other ways cards could have increased cost without being X, and shapeshifters immediately sprang to mind :) This could just have been Clone, but I decided to give it a specific boost for a bigger CMC to make the point more directly.
So the eight options are:
Overall, I think those are all at a pretty reasonable cost. Which given how modularly they're assembled feels very pleasing to me, as a Melvin.
(Um, given those last few options though, this should almost certainly be rare.)
