My attempt at this cycle is also unsure whether it wants to be uncommon 6-mana 4/4s or rare 5-mana 4/4s.
I should say that I do like the question this poses to the opponent. Either option could legitimately be the right choice.
To get an em dash, you need space-dash-dash-space, "
--". This can be the last characters on a line, as on the current modal card format, but you do need the trailing space. To get bullets is more fiddly. At the moment I copypaste the UTF8 bullet character from somewhere like Wikipedia or the Gatherer page for a modal card. (Well, I did that once, and now I have it stored in my clipboard library.) Or a comment like this one: •
I should make a nicer way to type bullets into cards, though. It unfortunately is hard to distinguish from using asterisks for emphasis.
Filled in most of the Syzygy Sphinx cycle, adding Dawn Sphinx, Guardian Sphinx and Hunting Sphinx.
For Challenge # 115 in a cycle with Syzygy Sphinx
This is one without "defending player chooses one", so I need to make the black one do that too. But it's supposed to feel similar in spirit, that the opponent has to choose right, although again, it may be too obvious.
I also wish I could get a better flavour of "it asks you a riddle and if you get it wrong it eats you". Maybe "choose a creature defending player controls, they may reveal a card from their hand with the same CMC, if not, ~ fights it", would that work?
See Challenge # 115. In a cycle with Syzygy Sphinx
This was torn between "Guardian" and "Desert", I wanted both for the sphinx theme.
I wanted at least one that drew cards, because Sphinxes have often done that in magic.
This is still a bit wordy. It was "each creature they control" but that didn't quite fit. And it's a problem that it complicated combat, I originally hoped to make it "spells you control do 1 more damage".
I also considered "Add RR to your mana pool", or "next spell costs RR less" which made a nice companion to red-draw, but it didn't quite work and was too similar to the U sphinx.
See Challenge # 115.
Yay, sphinxes with cats! :)
In the Syzygy Sphinx cycle. I'm not completely happy with this one, as the choice for the opponent will usually be automatic. Any other suggestions? I considered "2/2 cat or 1/1 flying bird" but I didn't like the flavour as much.
First card in a cycle for my own challenge, Syzygy Sphinx, to be followed by (provisionally) Hunting Sphinx, Guardian/Desert Sphinx, Dawn Sphinx and Dusk Sphinx.
See Challenge # 115.
First entry in my own challenge.
I envisaged a cycle of sphinxes that actually follow how I imagine their stereotype, of being creatures that give a riddle, but being on your side, they give a riddle to your opponent.
So I tried to make ones that give the opponent a choice, not just for "you get the worst of these" but the opponent has to genuinely judge which choice is correct.
Here, "Syzygy" is supposed to invoke both ancient astronomy, and high tide (as in, mass tapping/untapping). I'm not completely happy with it -- most people won't get the tide reference, and untapping lands and creatures isn't especially blue. But it's as far as I've got.
I will see the rest of the cycle before deciding whether they should be powered up to rare, or powered down to uncommon.
Alex: Remind me how to make bullet points and m-dashed correctly again, if there is a way? I keep forgetting formatting things like that that aren't obvious from the card creation page. (Maybe there should be an example of each formatting thing in Testing, if there isn't already)
Oh yes, I love the flavour of these!
I like how you linked these all by their flavor text.
I like the story this tells.
I see why these are called 'Challenges', haha. Fun experiment though.
My Cycle: Confering Sphinx, Diving Sphinx, Debased Sphinx, Secluded Sphinx, & Downed Sphinx.
I'm pretty happy with them, especially the black one.

It did have, "~ can't have or gain flying." and a built in Canopy Cover. Changed the wording so it more closely mirrors Bower Passage. Not sure which one makes more sense.
