"...Challenge # 063. 8 years ago..."
Oh.
Well I just felt really old, really fast.
🎅🎄
Yeah, this is almost the opposite of Challenge # 063. 8 years ago, which I don't really like to think about :) I figure it's fine to go round again.
The new ugraded site seems to make "all challenges" load without big problems again, which is useful!
Made Gift-Laden Sleigh. I'm pretty sure we've done a Christmas challenge before. But it's a good challenge anyways. And I don't think there was as much stress to make sure it could be a black-bordered card, so there's a bit of a difference.
For Challenge # 169. Originally I was trying to remake the bells in Carol of the Bells, that you could tap and untap by paying to do something. But I was having a problem figuring out exactly what they did. Eventually, I stumbled upon gift tokens. And since it was complicated enough, I decided to pare back, cut the bells shtick, and make it a sleight that was dumping presents on its reckless ride.
Create a card that evokes one or more Christmas concepts, e.g. snow, gifts, fir/holly/mistletoe, family meals, sleighs, candle-lit windows, etc, etc, but without directly referencing Christmas in the name in a way that would prevent it being printed as a regular black-bordered card.
E.g. imagine a Christmas theme deck with different art and flavour text, but of regular black-bordered cards. But design a card that could be used in that collection that doe.
Any rarity! Multiple submission are good, or prompts for concepts for other people to complete.
Also check out Challenge # 168 which came just before the forced site upgrade.
And Inscription of Ingenuity, a red card with some trickster-y ideas
Oh, maybe there's something in an inscription of trickery with "become 3/1" "switch p/t" and "2 damage". Or forced attack/block/no block.
Then sometimes the right move is to combine them all into "destroy target creature" but it's actually more interesting if you can make them all effective separately :)
See Challenge # 168.
OK, another go at this. This started off as a massive three way combat trick, but it was too focussed, it was a blowout blocking and mostly always wanted to be played the same way.
So I diversified a bit more. The first two abilities go ok together just because you might want them both in the same combat, but don't force you to pile them into a single self-combo.
The third ability stands alone a bit but is always ok to have. And red really DOESN'T have that many spell effects.
I think these cards feel best when they feel like a toolbox, when you feel good for using the parts together but there's not a single "fuse" that's always the correct combo.
I could have synergised a bit more, I tried to tie the damage to the card or the creature's power, but it all felt fiddly so I left it as is.
Yeah. That is still a little bit similar to the green one, but it definitely feels like a white multimodal spell :)
The last option definitely feels ok in white, though maybe it deserves its own card :)
I created Inscription of Devotion as a white one.
Yeah, let's do that. Was Basri's Solidarity and gain life for your greatest power.
Ah! I just realised one of these abilities is duplicated from Inscription of Abundance. Bother! Back to the drawing board I guess... I suppose I could make this "create two 1/1 tokens" and "gain life equal to the number of creatures you control".
My white entry to Challenge # 168. For a long time the first mode was only bring printed at 4 mana, but recently they've been printing it at 2: Basri's Solidarity, Oath of Ajani. The second mode is basically Soul's Grace.
The third mode obviously hasn't been done before, but I think it's reasonable. White gets to resurrect "small" creatures, where the definition of "small" varies from card to card. I don't think they've actually done a white card like this where the definition of "small" is a variable under your control, but it feels okay to me. But still exciting: I know a couple of players who'd see this and start dreaming about the biggest creature they could get back. (Never mind that Resurrection or Breath of Life would do that unconditionally for 4 mana.)
And the story the three effects tell works quite well.
The biggest drawback of course is that this is super wordy. The printed Inscriptions are fairly wordy, but this is even more so. Perhaps this doesn't need the final +1/+1 counter on the creature you return, but I felt it'd be too sad for that newly returned creature to miss out on the buff you've just given to the rest of your team. (And removing it doesn't even save a line, at least on Android.)
I agree this one looks pretty potent. The effect of zotting a land, artifact and creature are all pretty different. It's like Decimate.
Also Inscription of Desolation which isn't quite right either but includes some more introspection on what approaches I might take
See Challenge # 168.
I had a few ideas that didn't really work. This one I like but the modes are too similar, it's not really a modal spell. If you get multiple modes it won't usually do that much more.
The other idea the modes were too synergistic. Something like white "all creatures you control get +1/+1" "all... First strike" "untap all..." There wasn't much difference between them, they all applied on similar situations.
Oh, yes definitely. Yours is actually printable. Mine is more fit for silverborderland.
Rofl, yes, apparently so. Nice when we tap into the zeitgeist like that :)
I liked the damage version because you might legitimately write them out separately like that so the damage can be concentrated or spread out (and also just because I like lots of damage :)).
I think "recent updates" on the main page hasn't been updating continuously so I've often missed things if I haven't checked the set. Thank you for adding too the challenge post, I forgot that
Jack made Inscription of Immolation because deranged minds think alike. ;)
Oh! Jack we roughly did the same thing (I made Inscription of Perfidy), but I didn't see yours first. I'm adding it to the challenge.
And yes, I know the obvious counter-argument, so I might as well do it first before I waste Alex or Dude's time: There is no reason why this card shouldn't just say "If this spell was kicked, you may... up to three creatures..."
You're right. That's technically what the card should read. Still like the 'modal, even though it doesn't need to be' version, though.
