Or you could throw it with a goblin, or make it explode, or use something that has it fight something and it can't attack if you globally nullify defender and.. yeah, it's different in a lot of ways. It's a card Alex would build a deck around :)
Definately not overpriced. If anything it's too cheap. 8/8 Defender for

is probably too good, and more often than not, wouldn't be printed because it discourages attacking (though, could be printed if development decided that they got to stop creatures from attacking so often. That's a rare problem, but I assume it's got to happen sometime). The fact that this card smashes for the win if you Fling it, is just icing on the cake.
Can't deal damage, could still be enchanted to make it force them to discard, or ninjitsu'd or... ooh, instant speed have all its abilities anulled :) (Or the thing it blocks could have abilities removed) - or what happens if it's given deathtouch nowadays?
But mostly, yeah, it's an overpriced, white, Wall of Stone.
What's the difference between this and an 8/8 with defender?
If you cast it at someone who doesn't have a creature, then you probably deserve not to get any benefit from doing so. "All opponents sac a creature" is quite nasty enough, thank you.
What if they don't have any creatures? Then they can't sacrifice a nonblack creature, so they wouldn't discard. To prevent that, I suggest "If a player doesn't sacrifice a black creature this way, he or she discards a card."
What's a good way to make a large white card that can attack, but won't be any threat at all?
It seems reasonably red: a cross between Past in Flames and Fork. I agree it could be blue.
Strangely, casting things out of your opponent's graveyard has popped up on red's half of the color pie on the card Shaman's Trance. I seem to remember it happening one more time... but I can't think of what that card is.
Also, I can't see a real reason why you need to exile the card after casting. If a person has multiple Lingering Hatreds, they might as well go for it.
Probably ought to exile it after casting; doesn't seem like a very red effect to me, but I'm probably wrong. t also doesn't include colour fixing - so it's pretty much going to be "Cast my lava axe again" isn't it?
Edit: Duh, this is the "We flipped the colour pie" set, isn't it. So yes, it's a very blue thing to get to do. The lack of colour fix is still going to be painful.
