During one of Tendo’s early smuggling runs through the spirit realm, she drew the attention of the Kami of Forgotten Dreams. This kami, whose pastimes include leering back at depressed office workers from their glass of sake and triggering a hypnic jerk in people who are already short on sleep, decided it would be amusing to assist her for a while. Tendo appreciates the intelligence the kami (which she nicknamed Yume) is able to provide her in both realms, but knows that the whims of the kami are as fickle as the merge gates. Once the kami gets bored of giving the run-around to the Imperials and Jukai monks, it may decide that terrorizing Tendo is more fun.
Tendo is a rising star in the Towashi Undercity. Not officially affiliated with any of the major gangs, she works as smuggler and is famed for her almost supernatural speed of delivery. In truth, her magic allows her to actually pass through the merge gates into the spirit realm (Kakuriyo or Reikai) without being destroyed, and she uses these as shortcuts across the mortal realm (Utsushiyo). The Imperials are desperate to stop her as soon as possible and keep this under wraps, for they fear this as a major threat to their control of the plane. However, this has drawn the attention of some of the more mischievous (or malicious) kami, who have also enlisted her help for their own travel through the gates without the Imperials tracking them.
When rifts began to form between the mortal realm (Utsushiyo) and the spirit realm (Kakuriyo or Reikai), the Jukai monks worked with the Imperials and Minamo Academy to establish the merge gates to regulate passage of the kami. Koku is the current leader of the Imperial task force in charge of preventing unauthorized mortals with meddling with the merge gates. Tendo’s smuggling operation has recently become a major thorn in her side, and she fears the blame will fall on her if the Imperials don’t start making immediate progress towards capturing Tendo.
Koku and her Enforcers finally get the drop on Tendo and have the chance to bring her in, when the Phyrexian invasion hits Kamigawa. Koku reluctantly has to turn to Tendo for help now, since the latter’s knowledge of Kamigawa’s intraplanar portals will be crucial in leading the Imperials’ defense against the Phyrexian omenpaths.
