Recent updates to Melody: (Generated at 2026-01-30 15:34:08)
Really? I'd have thought the playerbase are happier with functional reprints than with cards that are strictly better than older cards. (Of course, cards that are strictly worse than older cards are most unpopular of all.)
The creation of functional reprints is certainly a precarious task, and sometimes adding that 1 toughness eases the conscience.
I'm not sure how important that bonus butt is to the function of the card though, so it may be more important to let it be pingable or killable by Noxious Charm, etc....
@ Alex - For the moment, requiring players to properly manage the order they cast spells is an intentional complication. All of these designs have yet to be playtested, so what you describe is definitely something I need to keep an eye on.
@ jmg - I've flip-flopped between the names of various abilities quite a bit, as taking musical concepts and applying them to the world of Magic is a fairly subjective task. At the moment, "Melody" is named what it is because it puts priority on the sequencing of spells, rather than a simultaneous "harmonizing" of actions.
Ultimately, if this were a real set, I doubt musical terminology would be in the final product, as the terms would be too beholden to their original product. (Like Bushido.)
Resonate is a recent addition to the set file, as I'm trying to explore more connections to the graveyard, as well as ways to generate card advantage without resorting to cantrips.
It's probably a little crazy to think that Recoup is a legitimate keywordable idea, but it's just an idea to test for now.
The development of the modal spells is certainly something I have to keep an eye on in playtesting. I feel somewhat comfortable at UU if I compare it to Soul Manipulation and assume Negate < Remove Soul and Unsummon < Raise Dead, plus there's no option for both.
During GDS2, I submitted this to Shawn Main (the blight guy) who said that playtesting showed it to be a tad bit strong, but I'm certainly interested in exploring it within this context.
Whoops, forgot the flying.
That's probably where I recall reading about it, then.
Ha, yes, I'd forgotten Arachnus Web. OK, I guess you're right.
I looked at it as a more natural representation of red's occasional anti-wall behaviour, which is less relevant in a world where walls are less and less used.
By and large, this design is a something of a proof-of-concept relative to my color-shift essay from GDS2 that I also recounted here.
With the printing of Arachnus Web, I think it's just as much about finding the appropriate flavor for the idea, as it is about figuring out whether the function is justifiable in green.
I started work on this during GDS2, so much of the outline was up on the Wizards wiki and discussed on the Salvation boards.
I also write about my progress on Goblin Artisans.
Wouldn't the name of the ability make more sense as "Harmony"? Since the melody would normally be the primary tune, and the harmony would be a complimentary tune?
...No, wait, I've misunderstood Resonate. The resonated card doesn't go back into your hand, it's a "pay its cost to cast it now or get nothing". Okay, that seems much more sane.
Could this say "up to one other target creature"? Otherwise the Melody effect could be a drawback if you want to cast this on the only creature on the board.
Nice! Feels at first like this should be a blue-black gold card - Consult the Necrosages, Esper Charm - but it's perfectly in-pie for black to get cards at the cost of a creature - Skulltap. Very nice common.
Like Viashino Sandscout but with 1 more toughness. Which is probably fine.
Interesting. Not sure if red has got power-based removal before. But it feels very much in-flavour: "if you're not much of a fighter, you die!" Nice Charm. All the Charms in this set are nice, actually.
Feels like I've seen this before, but I don't think I have. Which is a mark of a good design. It's somewhere between Bloodfire Dwarf or Bloodfire Kavu.
This is slightly more direct creature removal than green has got. I appreciate it's pretty similar in effect to Lignify and Entangling Vines, but it does look a bit too much like Arrest to sit well in the pie for me.
Ooh. Powerful effect in certain contexts. I wonder if this would appear in Legacy dredge decks?
In-block, a nice fine trigger. Sometimes you won't be able to use it, but that's fine.
