Really good against combo decks. What do they care for extra turns? They just blew all their resources to win on round three.
Not that I'm complaining about answer cards for combo decks that win on turn 3, mind you. In fact the real pity is that I doubt people would pack this counter, except in some sideboards. Maybe it needs a separate mode that lets you counter a spell for

so the card isn't dead in most games? Maybe not. I also kind of wonder if this card should say "Skip your next turn" because of the frenemies problem... but that isn't very fun, so I probably wouldn't do it.
Um. Possibly devastating in "My opponent is actually on my side" formats.
But a splashable countespell only usable in extremis? It's very "Wow" inducing. I want to say the downside if fair, but I fear it really isn't.
Flavor text typo fixed.
I took the wording from the reminder text for Spliced. Perhaps that should have been my hint that something was wrong.
May I suggest "card" in order to avoid confusion off things like Cipher and Isochron Scepter?
(I have no idea if this is remotely plausible or workable. It might work better if you stopped at "exile that spell when it resolves" and then had the activated ability say "Copy each card exiled with ~. You may cast each copy without paying its mana cost.")
Because that's a really silly "fake" drawback. It's something you would put on a creature thinking it's a drawback, but then you realize that it would just go in a deck with no lifegain. Suddenly, it's not a drawback at all.
how about the reverse? when you gain life, you lose 1 life.
Also, see Patron of the Kitsune and Righteous Cause, which are vaguely comparable.
Of course, this also doubles as an Urza's Armor with a body attached that's slightly better in some situations, yet worse in others.
I agree.
Looks to me like it's a
cheaper than it should be, I fear.
Actually it doesn't win with Carrion Howler due to the -1 toughness. There isn't much that I can see that this does break with; Wall of Blood still needs a Fling (or Rolling Stones) effect... Yawgmoth's Bargain was plenty broken already... Spatial Binding and Mischievous Poltergeist get better but aren't exactly snapped in two. Same with Unfulfilled Desires and Vile Consumption.
Maybe I did and I forgot about it. I haven't tried to make a control deck for a while... It's too miserable to try in Standard right now.
Huh? But... how could you not? It's Power Sink crossed with Dissipate - as in, it's literally named as a direct mix between them, Sink-ipate. It's Power Sink, but giving up the "remove all their mana" clause to exile instead.
Improved wording.
Upped CMC.
I'm pretty sure this is broken at this CMC.
Nice; all life loss reduced by one. Very VERY nice for 'pay life' effects. Hopefully people can't find a way to repeatedly lose 0 life. (Though this plus, oh, Carrion Howler is pretty much a win condition.)
I never even noticed the exile clause on Syncopate.
