2011-07-19 13:13:57: Alex created the card Challenge # 003

For example, design a Wurm that's not green or red, a Dragon that's not red, a Demon that's not black, or an Angel that's not white or black. (There are enough black angels that that's a well-established pattern now. The point in this challenge is to go outside the well-established patterns.)

The cards must make more sense in the colour/s in which you design them than in the creature type's more normally associated colour/s.

I'm not sure how these turned out, but here they are. I didn't keep them in the same rarity, so I hope that's okay. Pale-Wing, the Balancer, Loxodon Lorekeeper, Undying Hydra, Sphinx of Desert Winds, and Great Seatangle.

I figured they should be higher rarity since they're not normally seen in those colors, but I suppose designing common cards would have been more of a challenge.

Yeah, most Demons / Sphinxes / Hydras are rare or mythic, so it's appropriate for those to be.

I just realized this says three... I automatically assumed it said five. I need to start paying closer attention.

These are my 3 entries: (((Desecrated Sphinx))), (((Rage-Driven Vampire))) & (((Land Leviathan))).
Hopefully I met the requirements of the challenge - I think all three fit well into the colours they have been 'shifted' to whilst still retaining at least a hint of their origins.

Goblin Battletoad, Thief of Honor and Focus of Ire. Therer were so many rares being thrown around, that I felt a few uncommons were in order.

Hey, by the way, I got a good idea for a design challenge, but its possible we're doing these too fast. I'm really enjoying seeing what people come up with, but we're already up to 5 full pages of updates in what has probably been 3 days! That's a lot of reading, responding and designing! Can we come up with a formal way of doing this? Set up the next challenge at the beginning of the week, and establish who the next person to drop a challenge is in a more orginized fashion?

@jmgariepy: That makes sense. I've created (((Upcoming Challenges))) where we can arrange that.

  1. Rage Zombie, from modern zombie films like 28 days later.
  2. Messiach

So far there have been 6 blue zombies and Slavering Nulls in red.

I eventually got around to entering my own challenge. Ogre Pacifist, Jungle Kraken, Enraged Griffin and Kor Traitor. Four rather than three because I had four ideas, and I'm bad at culling my ideas.

Seeing as I entered Challenge #004, i decided that I should enter the previous ones as well. Here are my enties:
(((Holy Avenger))), (((Ice Troll))), and (((Merfolk of the Fire Sea))). Of the three I think the Merfolk is probably the weakest and needs work - though at the moment it is a great sideboard card against blue players.

I was going to add "Frankenstein's monster" as a blue zombie, but apparently Innistrad beat me to the punch, and this is official endorsed as part of the colour pie now! :) (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/twtw/153)

(There have been a couple (?) of blue zombies before, all with "drowned dead" flavour)

And it makes sense, Black uses dark magic to animate zombies, blue uses Mad Science - should be cool.
I was originally going to have Urthona be a Gothic Horror setting but when I saw the early advertising for Innistrad I guessed (correctly) based on the art & set name that it was going to be in that vein so I came up with something else.

Let's have the remaining three angels: Shivan Angel Craw Angel and Angel of the Pearl Trident.

Keeping the casting cost "we have an ability" and the number 4. I think they're still reasonable.

Not sure how good these are...Tired again, so that might affect the quality of the work. Mental Horror Corrupted Dwarf Angry Elves

I'm very late to this party, but I've got Pleisosaur Fossil, Eurayle, the Silent Beauty, and Magma Serpent.
