I was talking about just making another zombie, or treefolk, or maybe a juggernaut... something that enter the battlefield tapped based upon the flavor of the creature. You walked right past that, so good on you.
;)
Yes, I realise this only works in the UK and other 18 drinking age countries, and wizards would really choose USA if they had to choose a single country Un cards worked in. But that wouldn't have fulfilled the challenge :)
And yes, I don't know if it can ever be properly balanced. Maybe it should give the opponent the choice of drink, so they're implicitly buying in, and can choose water if they want, and you've already consented by putting it in your deck and casting it. And maybe say "if one player wins, the other..." because you're right, only one player should drink.
Hm, is there anything else that might actually be acceptable for un sets, but technically 18+?
I like the flavour of the randomness, but it might take a long time to execute. Would mono-black "Put a -1/-1 counter on each creature. Repeat until..." work?
Oh cheers, glad it turned out well :) I could have just made any ETB tapped card, but it seemed more interesting to do something about ETB, and Amulet of Vigor had already been made.
What did you mean about pure flavour for this mechanic? For ETB? Or for dreamwalker?
Hmm... You could perhaps say very little time was spent in design; I spent a little time in what we could call development, checking comparisons and envisaging various board situations to compare with printed cards, to get the costs interesting but fair.
Though actually, when saying "not as good as Sleep" I did neglect the situation when you'd rather spend 2 mana than 4, and only need one half of the ability.
Oh nice! I'd definitely build around this :D
Helix of Life, using "name two creature types" (but with the correct template). Phrase: "exile ~, then".
See Challenge # 147, using "name two creature types".
Used "repeat this process" in Revenge of the Blood Witch.
Adding "Name two creature types"
For Challenge # 147. I was expecting any card to include "Repeat this process" to have a lot of words. But after thinking about Mana Clash for a couple of seconds, this idea just popped out at me. It seemed cool, even if it took time to resolve.
I kind of wish I could make the card mono-colored black... but I wasn't really sure about all this randomness in Black. Philosophically, it sounds fine to do it on occasion, but I don't think Wizards ever has. Equally, this seems okay in mono-Red what with Scar and all... but I'm sure that would get some complaints too. Ah well.
A build around me! Glad to see you found something besides pure flavor for this mechanic.
Excellent, in of the fact that it seems so natural that it looks like no time was spent designing the card (though, I presume that would be rather wrong.)
Oh, sure, you can choose a small drink if you're playing this card. But the controller of the enchantment has to choose her/his target drink before clashing. And I can assure you, if I'm in control of this enchantment, I'm only going to start targeting small drinks if I lose too many times in a row.
(Alternatively, I hope you like Moxie. Because I love the stuff, even though most people seem to hate it. And I brought a 12 pack with me, to boot.)
Another aside: On average, I would say that, with two decks of the same composition, that any one random player wins clashes maybe 37% of the time. You know, because of ties, and the reasonable chance that both players draw a land. If that's the case, then your chance of 'losing' a clash is 63%, with a reasonable chance of both players needing to drink. :)
Blah, blah, blah legal drinking age varies by country :p
See Challenge # 147 using "continues to shine"
Mirror Polisher using "continues to shine"
Adding "three piles".
Dreamspinner using "enters the battlefield tapped".
I think unused words are now at:
"becomes a"
"charge counter"
"remove [cardname] from your deck before playing if"
"continues to shine"
"repeat this process"
"all creatures"
See Challenge # 147 using "enters the battlefield tapped"
Created Grasp of the Octopus for "eight target".
See Challenge # 147. A fairly straightforward implementation of "eight target". Lorthos, the Tidemaker plays in the same space, for natural reasons.
Usually won't be quite as good as Sleep, but in multiplayer you'll often be able to tap down multiple opponents' entire boards with this.
Oh, you're right. I was looking at Soulflayer and I thought it was. And I think it mostly is, but they sensibly put first and double strike next to each other, so I probably should put flying and reach next to each other. Oh good, that's ok then.
Well, you both have a 50/50 chance, so you may want to choose small drinks. I didn't think this was printable enough to develop :)
Each upkeep? I better make sure I have a designated driver lined up...
It occurred to me after the fact that something like Cairn Wanderer would do the trick. But I'm not sure what your reference to alphabetical order seems to mean. Are they doing that now? Doesn't appear to be on the Wanderer that way...
How do I keep forgetting gatherer can search for regexes?
Another not entirely serious attempt for "Target Eight", Drinking Contest :)
See Challenge # 147, incorporating "Target Eight"
Wake the Land using "Target Eight".
Adding "all creatures"
See Challenge # 147 using "target eight"
