I like these, "respond to the previous poster" challenges, hopefully a few more variants on the theme will still be welcome.

Design a card incorporating a word or words specified by one of the approx three previous posters. Then leave a word or words for the next poster to use.

A few details:

  • A single word, a phrase, or multiple words which must be used in any order are all fine.
  • You can use the word/words on any part of the card, tho' most suggestions will only make sense in rules text.

Note: We're generally relaxed about specifying extra or fewer suggestions, but for this one challenge, I'd like to try to keep EXACTLY THREE suggestions on the go at once. I think trying to meet the restriction can produce simple but interesting cards that wouldn't otherwise be made. So try to:

  • Not suggest extras, only suggest one new word/phrase per submission
  • It's fine to make a duplicate card based on a previously-used suggested word/phrase, but don't suggest a new word.
  • However, if it's been a day with no more answers, assume the previous words were too hard or not interesting enough, and feel free to suggest another one.
  • If you answer a challenge but don't think of any new word, it's fine to say "and someone else can fill in a word".
  • If there's an accidental double-answer both suggesting a new word/phrase, that's fine, don't delete the second one, but the next answer should not suggest one.

To start us off:

  • "Exchange"
  • "Minotaur"
  • "Win the game"

I apologise, I may have already broken the format a little... I created Lord of the Labyrinth :)

My extra phrase (to replace either "exchange" or "Minotaur") is:

  • "return [something] to its owner's hand"

LOL. Look at me not anticipating edge cases :) I think adding one replacement mechanic is the right thing to do.

Ha! All Lord of the Labyrinth needs now is some rider text that reads "If you exhcange a Minotaur with another Minotaur, you win the game."

Added Ascendancy Engine, using "win the game".

Let's see. How about I add "Remove [cardname] from your deck before playing if"

No takers in a day, huh? Okay, the rules state I add one more locked word/s. Let's try: "Protection from Shapeshifters"

True-Seeing Goggles using "Protection from Shapeshifters".

Adding "becomes a"

Whelming Nodes

Adding "charge counter"

Made Fuel from Food. Maybe we should add two word/s every other time we pull an Alex? Fine. Adding:

  • "Target eight"
  •
  • "continues to shine"
  •

Oop. Another 24 hours. Here's another one:

"flying, reach"

Let's try one more time, eh?:

"enters the battlefield tapped"

or, if you're feeling spicy:

"enters the graveyard transformed"

I am going to come back and answer some more of the challenges but I didn't have a chance this weekend :)

"Target eight" is really hard, I can't think of any existing rules construction that would use it apart from "Target Eight-and-a-Half-Tails". I think I'm going to have to allow a full stop, which still doesn't make it easy. But don't change it now, I like a challenge :)

It didn't occur to me when I wrote that that I got the usual wording construction backwards. Feel free to make that "eight target" instead. Or go for hard mode, if you so wish.

That makes sense. I might try both "Eight target" is an interesting challenge by itself.

Morphlicant was an attempt for "Flying, reach", but it didn't quite work, so that one's still open.

OK, adding Anti-ballistic missile with "Flying, Reach".

Adding new phrase "Repeat this process"

I've been busy over the weekend, but want to come back for some of these. Give me a chance... :)

Wake the Land using "Target Eight".

Adding "all creatures"

Another not entirely serious attempt for "Target Eight", Drinking Contest :)

How do I keep forgetting gatherer can search for regexes?

Created Grasp of the Octopus for "eight target".

Dreamspinner using "enters the battlefield tapped".

I think unused words are now at:

"becomes a"
"charge counter"
"remove [cardname] from your deck before playing if"
"continues to shine"
"repeat this process"
"all creatures"

Mirror Polisher using "continues to shine"

Adding "three piles".

Used "repeat this process" in Revenge of the Blood Witch.

Adding "Name two creature types"

Helix of Life, using "name two creature types" (but with the correct template). Phrase: "exile ~, then".

Her with Many Servants using "Exile, then", which I like a lot, but it doesn't quite work.

Norin, Jr another attempt for "Exile, then" which I really really like, but that doesn't quite work.

Both of those match my intent. "Exile it," "exile cardname", it's all the same.

I created Tamiyo's Dissertation, using "repeat this process."

Adding "would become."

Ghoststeel Paladin using "Would become"

That was hard, I may have been too stubborn again. I could think of almost no characteristics which become something, and need an effect to happen instead.

Adding "Or more"

Trifurcated Research using "three piles".

Adding "in a graveyard or on the battlefield".

First Zombie using "graveyard or battlefield" though I don't think the templating is quite right.

Adding "cards in his or her hand".

Created Wisdom Begets.

Adding "scries."

Created Siphon Thought and Redirect Progress. Partway through Siphon Thought, I thought I wouldn't actually use "scries", so I made Redirect Progress, then realized I was wrong.

Adding "the next time".

Made Bad with Names.

Adding "lose 20 life".

Made Life-cost Demon.

Adding "change the text of"

And I think extant words are:

"becomes a"
"charge counter"
"remove [cardname] from your deck before playing if"
"all creatures"
"change the text of"

Well, if the MTG generator has taught me anything; it's that that's almost a card all by itself:
When ~ becomes a charge counter (some good thing)
remove ~ from your deck before playing if all creatures change the text of (some common thing to change the text of)
