Hey, even Mark Rosewater isn't a developer :) Yeah, I don't know quite what the right balance is, but it should be in there somewhere.
Realized I can't change the CMC because of the challenge.
I don't like to be punched. :-(
More cards should have you punch other players :)
Fair enough.
It's weird how this instructs YOU to deal the damage.
Because of those things, this should probably be limited to nonland permanents, or only force the sacrifice of one permanent. I will never be a developer.
I, uh, went looking for that cycle to find the name :)
It would lead to amusing moments in tournaments where people choose to pay life to their shocklands even if they don't need the mana, just to defend against Rebalance. But still, that's not really a healthy state for the game.
Heh, the name actually evokes a different "burn all creatures" cycle, Bloodfire Dwarf/Bloodfire Kavu/Bloodfire Colossus. Might want to change that.
But yes, a flying Magma Giant seems perfectly printable (and rather good). Not as absurdly good as Bogardan Hellkite, but that's a good thing.
It'd have to be another shockland on turn 2, so you could be at 16... but yeah, that's perfectly doable in Standard and Modern. Owch. This is the kind of thing that the removal of mana burn was meant to help with...
Yeah, seems a very good spot. I think wizards may tone down which red (and black) wraths they actually print so there's not a critical mass of them in standard at once, but red is definitely entitled to a splashy wrath once in a while.
Oh, good idea for a self-challenge, and good card. Yeah, this looks pretty good, but within the acceptable window.
Bloodfire Dragon demanded 2 for 7!
So, for Challenge # 078 I rolled up... 2 damage for 7.
Two damage. At "Win the game unless you try really hard" cost. Guh.
Well, I guess it leave a lot of casting cost free to do other stuff with.
Huh! There's a card Kyscu Drake. How odd. Where wa... oh right. So we can be iconic and deal damage on arrival. That seems suitable. Magma Giant does this too, of course. Which means I sadly probably need to leave off the firebreathing.
Turn 1: Shockland, Birds of Paradise. Turn 2: Rebalance?
@Alex, yeah I wondered if this was weak, but I think it's somewhat counterbalanced that the 4-mode is requires a lot fewer hoops. You don't always have a bunch of artifacts around, but killing creatures attacking you is almost always good :)
@Vitekna: The intention was "attacking creature", but I decided to let it hit creatures after combat too. I assume "attacked" turns on after declaring attackers, just like "when this attacks" triggers after declaring attackers, not at end of combat. And yes, it is white-ish, but red does damage-to-attacker occasionally, and this obviously can't be white as half the time it does 2 damage to anything.
LOL
Interesting question: When has a creature "attacked". Is it after it is declared to be attacking; or is it only after it has finished combat?
Because "Deal 4 damage to target attacking creature" is kinda white and useful :)
Fun flavour. Power level seems fine; could possibly be down at 1 mana like Electrostatic Bolt or Galvanic Blast, but 2 is also fine.
Created Enrage the Soul at 3-damage-for-2-CMC, and Purging Fire at 5-damage-for-5-CMC.
War's over, dude. Though, I suppose it still doesn't make sense, eh? Hmpf. Okay... more esoteric Kami name it is.
But, but... Arcane is kami magic, and Kumano fought against the kami!
Spellweaver Helix with Hidetsugu's Second Rite.
Ooh. Nice effect. I agree you need to be careful with the cost of this kind of effect, but this cost feels somewhat high.
