Yeah, seems like a fine uncommon to me. Rare would get you 1/1 for
or 2/2 for
(well, maybe
).
2 and 2 is Lunge. (1 and 1 or 3 and 3 are both Searing Blaze.)
For Challenge # 078
OK, back to normal red burn spells. 3 for 2. That's searing spear. Can searing spear be a little bit better? Yes, of course, since lightning bolt was reprinted. In fact, if it gets slightly better in ways other than doing more damage or getting cheaper, it's probably still less good than lightning bolt (which is good because lightning bolt is very very very strong).
There's lots of similar "N damage to creature and X damage to controller" spells, but most of them are conditional. I don't think this exact combination has been printed, despite being one of the most obvious. Probably because the templating is rather ugly: maybe it should always be "three damage to creature and one damage to controller"? Or would 2 and 2 be too good?
Leashed Falcon, 1 damage for 1G.
Lightning Spear, a classic burn spell at 3 damage for 1R.
For Challenge # 078
Hm. 1 damage for 2 mana in green. Not as hard as blue, but still tricky. OK, lets fall back on "target creature with flying". It could just be a sorcery, but that's not as interesting, so lets play with fight. I think a fight creature acting mostly as a burn spell would normally be red, so why is a 1/1 fight creature green here? Because target creature with flying.
Originally I was just going to rely that the creature would always die, so it didn't matter if it had flying itself or not, but that didn't quite work, so I changed it to "leashed" falcon, implying both "trained to fight on command" and "can't fly high", and gave it low flying.
It's a bit wordy, but I think just about fits as a green uncommon or rare?
12 damage to a player for 7 with a negligible drawback? Seems considerably better than Searing Wind, I'll say that much.
Heh. Another option for Copybolt might be... another Copybolt. I say might, because the card currently reads "When may cast Copybolt..."
I assume you don't want infinite "When you cast a spell" triggers to go off... so may I suggest Copybolt gets reworded as a copy of the spell when you cast it? Or does that not work in Magic legalese? I admit, it's kind of weird when it comes to the targeting rules...
Enormous Bang
Heh. Interesting argument. (As a nitpick I'd say Righteous Blow is the simpler white Shock; although Harm's Way is better, it's less reprintable due to planeswalker interactions.)
OK, yes, if you're playing in a format where Dark Ritual or Swords to Plowshares are legal, and you want more copies of them, this can join the ridiculously broken squad.
But my point is, in most formats, you can't guarantee to have a ridiculously broken one-mana spell in your graveyard by the time you want to cast this spell (after all, even if you do, it's only broken because of the cost, if you have to mill yourself for lots first, you could just play a 2-mana white removal spell instead).
But in a U/R deck, you pretty much can guarantee to have a 1-mana red burn spell in your graveyard, because there's nothing quite like Dark Ritual, but there's dozens of cards which are basically "shock with a different name" which are always fairly playable at any point in the game.
Surely it's always Natural Selection or Swords to Plowshares? I admit, Dark Ritual and Lightning Bolt are pretty good options too though, and Unsummon is a bit uninspiring :)
Copybolt at U.
For Challenge # 078
Hm. Blue. 1 mana. 2 damage. Blue shock. We have red shock (shock), black shock (Disfigure), white shock (Harm's Way). How do we get blue shock?
OK, this is stretching "burn spell", but red probably gets most of the good 1-mana spells (apart from things like Path to Exile), so this is probably a burn spell a lot of the time.
Oh indeed, it's definitely cleaner this way.
It will outright kill the opponent if you cast it for 11 mana. But, well, Blaze/Fireball will do that for 21. Possibly more problematically, this will outright kill all opponents for 11 mana. Or in EDH... to hit each opponent for 40 you'd need... 14 mana? That's prooobably okay. Somebody ought to have a counterspell or Krosan Grip by then.
True, but I specifically had to make 5 do nothing. I could have cost it at

and changed the damage formula to add X+1 but.. yeuch. This seemed cleaner.
Well, at 9 it's doing 4+3+2+1 so 10, or more likely 4 and 6. So a double mostly-wrath. Which doesn't kill really tough stuff, or regenerators.
But still yes, splashy as intended; while hopefully not being a complete lockdown all on its own (add a Doubling Season and um,yeah, that's a win.)
Ooh, splashy. So I cast this for 7, say, and then I have a stored... double Simoon, and then later a single Simoon. If fired off on the same turn that'll be some way towards a one-sided Wrath. If you managed to pay Plague Wind mana for this, then you'll get several Plague Winds stored over several turns.
It's a pity that making X=1 doesn't do anything useful; that's a bit of a nasty realisation when you twig that. But nonetheless, yeah, this scales up quickly to a pretty exciting card.
Hmm. It's in that category of cards that you want in your deck but don't want to draw, like an Eldrazi if you're doing evil Polymorph tricks. You get a Flamekin Spitfire activation off a fetchland or some random thing... hmm.
This seems fair. It's possible it's a bit low-powered to be usable, but I can see it catching people by surprise some times. Yeah, good approach.
Ooh. Ruby Leech's effect as a rider on free spells. Yes, I can definitely see that. Makes a lot of sense. (Would probably be rare just due to the splashiness of a cycle of free spells.)
Ha!
Aggro decks lovelovelove this. But several decks that like Memnite don't like this one - it's somewhat silly to use for a turn 1 Kuldotha Rebirth, for example. Interesting.
Fascinating! I like it a lot. Often it'll be Peel from Reality, sometimes it'll be more or less. Nifty.
Challenge # 078
So I guess this is a burn spell because you'll trigger it immediately. I hope so anyway.
I rolled "Do zero damage for 5" And boggled a bit.
I first tried

and sorcery, thinking a one-shot one-sided pyroclasm at 7 would be fine.
But this is probably shinier. At 5 it's nothing, at 6 it's 1 damage to everything. At 7 it's 3 damage to everything, then at 8 it's 6 and starts to be game winningly cataclysmic. Should have given it a bigger name, I guess.
