You're both right when it comes to templating. Edited the card, but didn't functionally change what it is doing.
As for commonality... yeah, you're probably right that this wouldn't be a common, Alex. I've always felt that abilities like copying things is grokkable, and that even if players don't understand all the ins and outs, that a card like this isn't really more confusing than Cancel. But Wizards don't see things that way.
I've been a little out of the loop, so I didn't even know about Teach by Example. Making this a sorcery probably would have made more sense as a first version of the card. But I try to avoid functionally changing cards if I can after I press 'post', so common instant it is.
Oh, that's a great name for a "Copy target ability" ability. We should keyword that. (Also, given Fork etc. we sadly probably need "You may choose new targets for the copy" which makes this more than four words.)
I want to give the ability to a creature, call them "Sam" and have it in a pseudo-Casablanca set.
But that's really reaching for the joke.
So... perhaps go with something else in mtg that's known for copying - Vesuvian Meditation?
I fear this might be too confusing/advanced and/or too niche for common. It looks like an uncommon to me. (Of course, Teach by Example was the first common with its effects too, so...)
Simple effect, simple name: Imitate. (Which is also surprising that it's not a name that's taken yet.)
The standard reminder text (e.g. Disallow) seems to be "(Mana abilities can’t be targeted.)"
Welcome back! I was going for something a little more complex when I realized that this card didn't exist yet. Which is wild. That's a four-word open-ended common, which isn't going to be a good draft pick for some sets, but invaluable in others. (Sets where you need to sacrifice a land to activate a strong ability, for example.) (Oh, and the reminder text isn't perfect, but I figured it got the job done.)
But what is the card's name?
Alex takes it this week with 'Outpost Armsmaster'. See you on (((NTC #072)))!

Oh man, Spellbinder looks like an awesome choice, but it's technically a non-bo on round four, since NTC #71 isn't dealing combat damge. Armaments 4 and Spellbinder 5 is definitely a recipe for game over, though. Gauntlets and Shield, though, is a hilarious 16 point life swing, though. :)
Welcome back everybody!
Maybe we're thinking too outside the box, maybe curve into Gauntlets of Light, possibly with Accorder's Shield? :)
Angelic Armaments or Spellbinder would be fun choices too. Cast for
, use the 4th plus this mana to equip.
I am (not) going to hold you to that :P
One of these days, I'll have to commission an artist just for one of these cards. 🧐🎨🖼️
Woah cool art!
I'll give mine some art too:
[A simple, silvery golem is covered/equipped by strata-like layers of various things, starting with a layer of mossy shale, then one of rusted machinery, then the corpses and skeletons of large mammals, and finally entire busted buildings. This all fits in the art because the further from the golem you get, the strata are squished into frame, as though they are receding away from the viewer. this can be accomplished by using three point perspective and having all the biggest stuff approach vanishing lines, btw i just googled all of those terms lmao. It would be really cool to have the topmost strata eclipse the sun which would add a lot of cool shading to the whole picture... Maybe since the sun is mostly or entirely eclipsed the central light source could be golden light spewing from the golem's eyes. This would look totally out of place because the golem is so simple and unintimidating, but it would also be cool because a viewer would understand he's a threat not because of where he started but because of what he's carrying!]

Oh, yes, it didn't occur to me how good this was with Heartseeker. It just isn't "curve round 3 into round 4" good.
It could be something with an equip cost up to 7 (if it was played on turn 2). Or something with an unattach ability so you want the mana every turn, eg Heartseeker But I didn't find any actually good examples.
M not sure I'm going to find a flavour better than Alex's, but I'll try :)
Thank you! I think these challenges come at the right frequency that I almost always get interested in submitting an answer, putting me ahead on the numbers game :)
Out of curiosity, I went to find what the perfect round four play for this creature would be. There's surprisingly not many options. That is, if you're planning on dropping a four cost equipment with a three or two cost equip. There are plenty of good Swords on three. Those are probably what you should build around. But if that feels wrong, Manaforce Mace or Opaline Bracers would make this a fine battering ram for a 4 or 5 color deck.
I reckon this is an Outpost Armsmaster, a Kor Soldier from Zendikar.

Welcome back! My original plan was to hunt down a card without a name in Multiverse, and have us give it a name. So I started hitting the 'show me random cards' button. This proved to be more challenging than I would have first guessed. The most common types of cards without names in Multiverse don't have abilities either... they're just placeholders. Then there's the vanilla creatures (and boring ones at that. 3/1 for
and whatnot.) Followed by commons with relatively basic abilities that weren't terribly exciting to talk about, so coming up with a name didn't seem too exciting either.
I tried just typing the word 'card' in the search bar, hoping to get all the cards named Card0732 and so on, but the search bar doesn't work that way. Found some interesting stuff in there. Stumbled across 5c should name his cards v1 in there, and liked the 'Suit Up' mechanic... but decided it should probably look a bit more like this to make the mechanic a little more evergreen.
So I'm setting my search for a card in Multiverse that needs a name aside for right now in favor of a different similar card. I'll come back to it later. But for now, I need this card to have a name, and a creature type.
Heh. I just report the news, I don't make it. ;)
Jack is on a winstreak, lmao
Jack takes it with Walking Windmill! See you guys in a couple for (((NTC #071)))!
