Jack wins with Gleam of Victory! Tune in to (((NTC #098))) to see how some of our mechanics get mixed together in the race for 100. See you then!
Command Post
Clan -- Melee or Intelligence
extensible into all five colors. other clans could be like Productivity/Growth, Destruction, Worship/Religion.
Clan itself is parasitic. Can't mix Clans from different sets if they're too specific to one plane. Hence generic names could span across expansions and planes.

There are a lot of things we haven't done. Admittedly, I was thinking about making the design for number 100 be a challenge on the Multiverse Design Challenge set. But then I realized someone would have to choose who the 'winner' was, and that just seemed like a lot of unnecessary pressure for what is supposed to be a fun design challenge. Maybe we'll do that in the future, but have everyone submit one design. Just not for 100.
I don't want to take over the challenge, but I can't help think of the angles we haven't covered.
General's Dilemma
Choose Might or Right
I tried to think of an iconic split that could exist within white's colour identity alone, or a choice for the whole set, or have each half be shared with an allied colour. I wanted something like "community" vs "regulations" but Might/Right was the closest I could think of.
You could make the winner of the previous challenge make the next one :)
But I'm not sure most of is would actually have the energy to do it, you're good at finding interesting challenges!
Oh, it sucks to have ideas and opinions and a wish to also remain neutral. ;)
For another option:
Gleam of Victory
Choose Dromoka or Otujai
With the implication that there might be a monocolor cycle each giving a choice of the overlapping clans. After all, it says choose a "clan" :)
I think having five options in the set instead of two probably works less well, but I think it's possible. You could also branch out with say a sorcery that gives you a choice of only one clan (but locks you in to that one if you use it), or a no- or five- colour card that gives you a choice of five (which would need to be a bonus based to "cards watermarked with that clan" or similar)
Haha! I'm certainly not the boss of you, Jack. XD
Daimyo's Auspices
Clan--Choose Samurai or Ninja
"the use of Skirmish over Bushido would infer that this is probably on another plane."
YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME :)
Seriously, sorry, Bushido would be a better fit but Samurai and Ninja just fit the two abilities really well it seemed inevitable, and plausible to have samurai have a variant of bushido rather than their own keyword. Or that maybe there's a plane with Knight and Rogue types, but overall themed as Samurai/Ninja.
Welcome back! I was sure you had dropped this, so im happy to see that isnt true :-)
Name: Tactician's Insight
Clan A = Outmaneuver Plan
Clan B = Attrition Plan
I really like this idea because it could result in a set where each color has exactly two distinct archetypes. It would be neat to see if that works out good or not.
It may also be neat to have cards that say "if your clan is X then Y" but I realize that is probably too parasitic to be printed
Welcome back to name that card! And sorry for the break. I was on vacation. :)
We're closing in on the final cards before we hit (((NTC #100))), and I wanted to review and combine some ideas we worked on in the past. This card has Clan, Skirmish, and Probe. Although, the only 'new' mechanic is Clan. Skirmish is a more generic Bushido, and Probe is a keyworded gustcloak.
This card still needs a name. And it needs the name of the two clans. While the first card to include Clan used 'Mortal or Kami', the use of Skirmish over Bushido would infer that this is probably on another plane.
What is this card's name? And what are the two clan names?
The perfect magic card doesn't exi-
Froggy wins this week. I chose substitute over switch because switch sounds like it could belong to a lot of mechanics, while substitute reminds me of subbing in athletes in a sporting event, and that's not such a bad parallel. Also changed the flavor text to keep it G rated. :D
See you all in ((NTC #097))!

Medical Corps Ninja
Fox Ninja
Kawajutsu (short for Kawarimi no Jutsu, from Naruto's Substitution Jutsu)
> Thank goodness you pictured a Loxodon, 'cause I didn't think to include an art synopsis explaining it wasn't just a normal old six thousand kilogram African elephant coming to the rescue LOL
:D

@jm
Sorry, I totally missed the part about the mechanic...
Honestly, I'd go with Substitute... though that already refers to something in the game community, it's not a mechanic of it's own...
Another idea could be Switch which I think is unused since the term they use for Switcharoo-effects is 'exchange'
Honestly though I'm not great at naming mechanics, and in particular a serious-sounding name clashes just a little with my un-design :-P
Hey Froggy! The mechanic still needs a name. ;)
Ooh, Elephant Ally is really strong too.
I'm struggling to think of anything good. I thought of "loxodon bodyguard" but I think Big Bro is better :) Maybe something like "guardian angel", but I can't think of a good name other than that.
ETA: MTG is overloaded with words. Ambush? Substitute? Champion a creature to hand? Guard?
Name: Big Bro
Type: Elephant Ally
Flavor text: I heard you were talking shit about my little bro???
Quick note before the question is asked: If the creatures that were blocked are no longer on the battlefield between the time of cost and the resolution, that doesn't mean NTC #096 doesn't enter the battlefield. It does so, and blocks what it can.
If a creature was blocked by two creatures, and one was returned with this ability, and then the opponent did something to remove that creature from combat (for example, Labyrinth of Skophos) then I suppose that creature gets blocked again by NTC #096. Weird.
