Well, it's a two card combo, CMC4 and CMC5 (triple coloured), that turns it into
:Draw a card.
So I'm not too worried about that abuse.
Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir makes this downright funny.
Well, the original idea was to reward you for your opponents playing lots of different keywords (so you'd be likely to hit) or lots of one keyword (since again, you'd figure it out and probably hit)
Re-rethinking; I could probably drop the cost a bit; as almost never going to hit on anything except a creature. (Or maybe a flashback deck makes it too danegrous?) Land, for example, always stymies it.
I note that this isn't "play with lots of keywords" like Concerted Effort, but "play with lots of one particular keyword". Like Isperia the Inscrutable or Stonebrow, Krosan Hero or Astral Slide, but flexible to go with any of them.
heck; allow it to target yourself; it might actually be useful then, and it's costly enough that to be "Draw a card" it has to hit every time and that doesn't cost much more. Ok, raise activation to 2 too then; since it does have the originally intended use, too.
I probably shoulda gone with the more obvious "Target player (hint: yourself)" version for a first application of this.
Ah well.
Zabba zoo. Now featuring Divine Debt.
For Challenge # 060. Man, this was a tricky one. I wanted to get a card in that was somehow equally Black-Red as it was Green-White. I think I got there, stealing a page from Overload... I imagine Concecrate (and it's reversing partner Desecrate, I suppose) to appear on mono-color cards as well, changing the color of the card based upon the Concecrate/Desecrate cost. Confusing stuff... but each instance of it would just be spelled out in the reminder text anyway. My big annoyance is that, while I feel like I got this card, I can't come up with a proper name for it. The mechanic matches the art... but not the flavor. This card is about creatures, not books... and I just can't seem to reconcile that with the card's name.
"Any opponent"?
Play with a lot of cards with keyword abilities (I'm going to assume this isn't for 'keyword actions' like 'regenerate' and 'exile'. Stupid Magic vocabulary)? I'm game. Wizards has never called out 'keyword' on a card, but I don't see why there can't be a first.
I actually kind of agree with you Link. I think I like this as a blue/red creature because it matches a blue/red Izzet-ish ethos, not because the card is blue in any way. I tried making the creature blue only and the activation red only... but that just looks worse. The blue frame just doesn't look right for what it does.
I'm curious Link. I just dropped the cost of the card by one and changed +1/+1 counters to pressure counters. Does that help make the card feel more blue? Or is this card doomed to be mono-red?
That was me, by the way.
How about "any player except you" - stops you dumping all your stuff into it ready to Fling; you can only grow it if you actually take control.
This really should not be hybrid, in my opinion. In fact, I fail to see why it's blue at all.
Hardly a triumphant finale for me: Glowy Orb
For Challenge # 060:
Cupped hands, with bangles, holding a crystal ball with a pearlish white glow.
So very tempted to call for a card named "Stereotypical Bad Fantasy Art".
.. ok, thought about this for ages; and have no dgood ideas. Let's hit random card to see... Akroma, Angel of Wrath. That's... a lot of keywords. Oooh; I know, fortunetelling with keywords!
ah; I was somehow reading this as "All other creatures you control"
Yeah; this explodes the board. Ok; that's worth it.
Sure, but that won't kill all your opponent's Birds of Paradise and Prodigal Sorcerers into the bargain. This is kinda like Ashling the Pilgrim or Electryte.
Mm, I usually like "Consider the tradeoff" effects; but this one strikes me as just too terrible a trade in most situations. I mean; cant I just have 3/3 firebreathing for that cost?
Now that people have gotten their chance to make their cards, I'm going to slowly give this one more pass, to see what else I can pull out of this artwork. Starting with: Psionic Elemental.
For Challenge # 060. Originally, this was a blue creature that activated red mana to add the counters. I asked myself how I could introduce red in the cost, and blue in the activation, and decided to have this guy deal damage to yourself as well, ala Psionic Blast. Weird, huh? Probably only makes sense in the minds of a small number of players, though.
